Segment #5

Sitting on the floor, Veronica turned the letter over and over in her hands. It wasn't actually a letter — just some words and numbers written on a piece of paper, really — but to her it had been the happiest letter of all, sent by life itself. To welcome another life into her little bubble of happiness.

She still remembered how excited she'd been, the sheer thrill that had run through her body at the news. How would Abhay react? Oh, she could already imagine! He'd probably lift her high and spin her all around! He'd shower kisses all over her face, hugging her over and over again. And then, eyes shining with love, he'd leave the gentlest peck on her forehead, promising to protect them both always. And just like that, their marriage would be perfect again.

Ha!

She felt like laughing now. What a fool! What a silly, foolish, naive little girl she was!

The very night she'd planned to reveal the happy news was the night he decided to go for his "business trip". She had decided to wait out the two days, reveal it to him when he came back... but how was she to know just how far he'd already drifted from her?

So when she'd packed and left, she'd intentionally left the letter on top of the fridge, where he always kept his glasses before going to bed. She knew he'd see it. She wanted him to.

If he was gonna lose her, he might as well know just what else he was losing.

She didn't know why she'd thought it would make a difference. What was she expecting? For Abhay to come crying at her feet and beg her to take him back? She knew he'd always wanted to be a father, and as the mother of his child he would want her to stay in his life. But would it even matter? He wouldn't be doing it for her then, only for the child. Would she return to him, after everything he did? After everything he'd put her through?

But apparently, she needn't have put so much thought into it. Abhay had sent the papers back. He hadn't even bothered coming himself. He'd just handed over the envelope to Sam, who in turn had brought it back to her. In short, he hadn't even cared.

Eight years of togetherness, three years of marriage, countless, countless memories and the promise of a new beginning...

And he could just — return it. Like an Amazon-bought pair of shoes that he decided he didn't like after all.

It felt like a slap on her face. No, it felt worse, so much worse. Like a thousand needles pricking all over her soul, bleeding out all the hope and tenderness she'd managed to preserve in there.

And now, after seven days of alternately cradling the envelope close to her heart and throwing it as far away as she could, she decided enough was enough. She couldn't bear it anymore. She was gonna rip the paper, tear it into tiny shreds. And then maybe she'd burn it for good measure.

Steeling her heart, she shook the envelope vigorously.

Only now, alongside her reports... a small blue piece of paper came fluttering out the envelope too. She hadn't noticed that one before. She picked it up and read it.

It was a tiny, crumpled up note in a familiar handwriting... yet it made her freeze again.

Lizzie ke notes dekhke I did a double take thinking I missed something, but then you mentioned that she only knew him through her husband and her cousin and he also helped Shweta choose the wedding gift so... I thought maybe I did miss it 👀
