There are three things you need to know about Kat Tanner (aka Kathleen Tyson. . . and yes, she is *that* Kathleen Tyson): 1) Sheâs determined to make good decisions, 2) She must get married ASAP, and 3) She knows how to knit.
Being a billionaire heiress isnât all itâs cracked up to be. Determined to live a quiet life, Kat Tanner changed her identity years ago and eschewed her familyâs legacy. But now, Katâs silver spoon past has finally caught up with her, and so have her youthful mistakes.
To avoid imminent disaster, she must marry immediately; it is essential that the person she chooses have no romantic feelings for her whatsoever and be completely trustworthy. Fortunately, she knows exactly who to ask. Dan OâMalley checks all the boxes: single, romantically indifferent to her, completely trustworthy. Sure, she might have a wee little crush on Dan the Security Man, but with clear rules, expectations, and a legally binding contract, Kat is certain she can make it through this debacle with her sanityâand heartâall in one piece.
Except, what happens when Dan OâMalley isnât as indifferentâor as trustworthyâas she thought?

This was my second Penny Reid book. I should have started from the first book of this series but the title captured my attention and I have read one of PRâs books before, maybe around 2017 and I remember I enjoyed it. I donât know why I havenât picked up more of her books. When I read this, I knew I was going to start the series from the beginning and read all of the books.
Katâs cousin is after her and wanting to get her checked into a mental institute to get a hold of her inheritance as her guardian. Now she must do something drastic and quick to stop that. So, she first asks her friend Steven, but heâs got a new boyfriend.
Now the idea is to ask Dan, the security man. The man sheâs been thinking about for 2 years, secretly admiring and maybe loving.
I loved Kat. She has been through a lot and sheâs trying her best. The background with her parents and her past, the way sheâs overcome all of that just makes you see how much hard work sheâd put in to change her life around. She is a multi-billionaire whoâs doing a normal job and away from the limelight. Not everyone knows sheâs the heiress.
Given what sheâs been through, it is understandable. I really did feel for Kat, the pressure of being an heiress, the money, the fame that comes with it, the obligations she has as the only daughter of her father and the obligation to her fatherâs business just makes it seem like she has a lot on her shoulders.
She must think of everything twice, thrice before she does any actions. Sheâs been hesitant and afraid to do anything that might seem out of the ordinary because sheâs always been afraid of showing signs of MH. Her mother had been diagnosed and sheâs always been disregarded by her father as he seemed to think sheâs going to be diagnosed one day as well. I did detest her father, I donât care that the man is on his death bed, I hated how heâd treated her and the path sheâd chosen because of his negligence.
I have not read the previous stories so Iâm not sure how sheâs been portrayed but here she seems sweet, quiet and innocent. She eats a lot of cheese, especially when sheâs stressed and sheâs always in her head. Contemplating and mulling things over before sheâd say or do something. When sheâs stressed out, just give the woman some cheese. I loved her internal thoughts before she comes out with saying what she wants to say.
Dan the security man. He seems broody and all serious from his job. But pull him out of it, he had an easy, going personality and I found him to be quite hilarious. Some of things he pondered and even said aloud just make it funnier. I loved his mother, Eleanor OâMalley. His scenes with his mother were funny, especially when heâd forgotten her birthday and wondered how to come up with excuses. When heâd finally made the call, the way Eleanor informed him that she thought he was lying in a ditch somewhere and had Father Matthew on standby to give him his last rites because heâd forgotten to call was just too funny.
When I read the background on his family, I sympathised with Dan. He himself has had a disaster of a childhood, despite his motherâs efforts of raising them wonderfully. His cheating father, then his older brother (step brother - spawn of his father with mistress) being so wayward and hurting the family over the years. He shouldâve been looking up to his elder brother, Seamus should have been a role model instead he had dragged Dan down and Dan ended up going to prison and doing time for something heâd done when heâd been young. Dan changed and he just turned into this inspiration.
âI swear Seamus was conceived by @nal sex. Thereâs no other explanation for him being such an asshole.â
I loved getting his perspective and he is equally fond of Kat or in his words, Kit Kat. Heâs been crushing on her but was crushed when sheâd told him during a drunk stupor, she didnât know how to do monogamy or something, he took that to mean sheâs polyamorous.
Since then, heâs been disappointed, he wasnât against it, but he wasnât into polygamy.
In the next moment, his mouth hooked upward and he pushed away from the wall, sauntering toward me. Instinctively, I took two steps back.
âKit-Kat.â He wagged a finger at me, like Iâd been naughty. âYou liked me.â
âYou liked me, you just said so,â I volleyed back, the words sounding like an accusation.
âI did.â His grin grew and his voice deepened. âAnd I do.â
Oh.
Okay.
Here we go.
It was so hilarious when it came down to the court where they registered the marriage and Kat found this out. The scenes were hilarious. Especially when theyâre kissing and tended to go overboard, and Steven had to tap Danâs shoulder to remind them the minister is getting late to go pick up his granddaughter.
Danâs use of the word Fck all the time. He is so hilarious. He made a whole sentence using that word as the subject, object, verb and adjective. đ The things heâd be willing to do for Kat, even if it was some kink of hers to see him zip tied to a metal chair and his hands cuffed and eating pancakes â which is not her kink but a situation heâd ended up in.
âI told you we should have used the taser.â
âBut then he would have shit his pants,â John motioned to my pants. âLook at those pants. Those are nice pants.â
âYeah,â I agreed, âI donât want to shit these pants. I like these pants. The pockets are deceptively roomy.â
âI said, you fckfaced shitstain,ââhis words were low, slow, measuredâ âget the fck away from her, or I will fcking fckily fck you the fck up.â
I stared at Dan, my lips parting in wonder. Heâd just used some variation of the F-word as a noun, verb, adverb, and adjective all in one sentence. I didnât know whether to be mortified or impressed.â
The story had a lot going on and it was such a fun read. I did switch between my kindle and audible app since I was listening to it as well. Danâs chapters in Audible, narrated by Stephen Dexter made it funny. Especially when he did the internal monologues of Dan.
I loved the knitting group, the things theyâd discuss was just funny. I am so looking forward to reading the series from the beginning and reading each book.
Everyone needs a friend who can bring them tears and abdominal pain with funny stories.
