Conifer Avani, the Amber National Park's chief officer, walked into the near-destroyed mansion.
The all-marble structure that had refuged many a fine men, savaged by the cyclone Qayamat just a week prior to our setting, resembled leftovers from the plate of some haughty heir.
The Day of Judgement was almost there!
A couple of dignitaries seated around a rickety excuse for a table, nodded at Avani who promptly presented his curriculum vitae. "So, you are the man?" the plumper of the two, Mr. Pink raised his eyebrows. "I've read the conditions, Sir, and I agree." The other, Mr. Checkers, answered, "And why should we agree to employ you?"
"It's this or death, sir."
Mr. Pink leant over to Mr. Checkers and whispered something.
"Fine," said he, "We'll give you the chance sonny."
"What's my job, then, sir?"
"You will drive the Noah's Arc, Mr. Avani." He nodded. "You will be escorted to a spaceship that has been bestowed with exceptional powers that shall keep it in the Earth's hemisphere till the end of Apocalypse. Post which, you will descend upon any piece of land that is visible and...start afresh."
"And what of you, Sir?" Avani blurted out.
Mr. Pink smiled. Conifer could tell even in the dim light, that the smile was very odd. He said, "We'll die in each other's arms, sonny." Checkers bowed courteously.
Conifer could neither believe his eyes nor his ears. He stood there dumbstruck for a good few minutes. Then coughing, Mr. Pink said, "You may join your wife Virescent on board."

At last water receded; and a tawny scratch of land emerged.
"D'you think it's safe to land?" Virescent looked tentatively from her husband to the raging ocean beneath them. She had been a vivacious young lady. Though their recent adventures had robbed her of most of her innate beauty, a faint glow remained as the forerunner of their child.
Avani nodded grimly. He had taken on this challenge purely because he dreaded death.
Then it hit him.
They were completely alone in a planet that had once been home.
"It's still home," Virescent tried to reassure him, though it sounded more like she was comforting herself than him because the barren stretches that were diving in and out of the seas didn't seem remotely welcoming. "Come on," she said, "If we don't and now, we'll crash. Probably into the sea."
Yes! Delay death, he thought.
Virescent said, as though reading his mind, "Come on. At least we get to choose how we die. Together?"
He jerked his head, "Together.".

As an Agricultural Consultant, Virescent had already mastered the art of feeding her family, enhanced by Conifer's adventurous instincts, they soon got the knack of hunting. Together, they started a new progeny.
