Hello folks! Before the onset of the exam season, I'd like to present something unconventional and different. Something on the greatest detectives of all times, the beloved Mr. Holmes. The plot is entirely my imagination and I've worked considerably hard on it, to develop details and stuff. Hope you guys like it!

Ramya di, this is for you! And dedicated to our craze for murder mysteries ;D

THE PROVIDENCE

I was lazily lying on a couch, one humid summer day as my dear friend, Sherlock Holmes was busily drowned in an experiment. There would be an occasional puff and a hissing sound which would force me to raise my head in curiosity and then I would reconcile back into the soft cushion.

"Watson, would you be kind enough to prepare a glass of lime juice for me? Its unbearably hot", he said. I moaned and twitched for it seemed too heavy a task to get out of comfort and do something. "

Common chap! Wouldn't you oblige me a drink for Lestrade too?"

I looked puzzled, for there was no one in the room save the two of us. But before I could open my mouth to object, there entered Lestrade, the Scotland Yard officer.

"This in unacceptably ridiculous!", I jumped out of my seat in sheer inquisitiveness. This was something extraordinary, I couldn't imagine how Holmes had managed to deduce that.

"How in heavens did you did you guess that?"

"Well, that's elementary science. I heard the synchronous tapping of footsteps up the stairs... Which told me I'd a visitor. Besides, I saw him coming up, through the window. Everything needn't be an assumption, Watson", he chuckled.

I foolished slapped myself mentally and straight away got my weary self to prepare drinks.

"What is it, folk?", I could hear Holmes enquiring about the case.
"This one's rather uncanny, Sir. I had to personally visit you for it", he said.

Sipping up on juices, the three of us started discussing the case which held much of gravity to it.
"Holmes, you know Mr. McCalister Oakwood?", Said Lestrade.

"The same surgeon who was accused of carelessness on duty and was ripped off his degree, the last year?"

"Yes, precisely. That surgeon was found dead, hanging in a net tied on the eighth floor of his residential apartment. On investigation, I discovered that there was construction work in progress on the tenth floor and the net was tied for safety of the workers. He lived on the tenth floor itself. And the surprisingly shocking fact is that he was shot and thrown."

"Pause, how did you know he was shot and thrown?", Errupted Holmes.

"Probably because a bullet was found in his back"
"Alright, so what's the concern then?"

"As a matter of fact, there was no one on the floor at that time, when he either jumped, or was thrown. There's no gun that we've found, that is, the murder weapon itself is missing and I've no clue how to move further."

Holmes sat thinking, as he pushed his lean body further into the chair. I, meanwhile, was too exhausted to rattle my brains, given that I didn't have much of the detective knack needed.

"Meet you at 2, in Mr. Oakwood's apartment", Holmes stood up abruptly. Lestrade left almost immediately as he'd an urgent wire to send.

"Poor McCalister. But somehow I knew he would meet such an end."

"How can you be so sure?", I protested involuntarily.

"Oakwood was a quiet surgeon. I've read his manual on anaesthetic drugs and chemicals and met him twice in medical conventions. He was a fine man, plump and brainy. But he had a notorious habit of drinking before his surgeries. Not much, just a few drops of champagne to awaken his senses and light off a fire in his body. Last year, his wife apparently ditched him and that didn't go down very well with him. He must've drunk far too much beyond his capacity, hence he was banished from duty and his degrees were taken away. That was the end of his glorious career. Funny that stealthy women often destroy both their love interests. The lover of Mrs. Oakwood was found dead in a drug poisoning case and I've heard she herself has been missing ever since. Alive or dead, no one knows."

Homes let out a deep sigh and was silent, until he finally spoke slowly -
"Would you mind an early lunch at the Parker's today?"

Notwithstanding my strong desire to stay indoors, I complied with his request and in a few minutes, a doctor and a chemist were seen leaving from the coveted 221B, Baker Street.

Sharp at 2, we arrived at the Oakwood's and Lestrade was waiting for us. The apartment was largely devoid of furniture, barring a sofa and a dining set, placed in far corners of the huge Hall. I found Holmes sniffing strangely as we entered the living. The body was kept in the center of the room. Holmes, without glancing at the corpse, left straight for the terrace and peeped down, over the wall. The net could be seen, dangling at the eighth floor.

"Oakwood's body was found here", said Lestrade.

Holmes nodded and let out a puff from his pipe. "Where is the construction on?"
"On the other side on the floor", I pointed out.

"Let's move on then"

It so happened that the old neighbour of the Oakwood's, Mrs. Scott was getting her house renovated. Hence, the entire place was terribly strewn with plaster and wood.

"I'm afraid I cannot attend visitors at the moment", she coughed and spoke to Holmes.
"Just two minutes, Madame", he pleaded.
They shook hands and she smiled lowly. I don't know if it was his eye's sparkle or his contagious affection but she immediately let us in. Holmes, very gently, explained it to her that how her neighbour had been murdered and he enquired if she had heard any gunshot.

"My poor ears have turn quite deaf, sir. It's unlikely that I should hear a distant sound, sitting here in my room".

Holmes let out a low grunt but insisted to sit there for a few more minutes.
"That's a rare mantle piece", he squeaked.
"From the South America", she replied with grace.
"Isn't it from Brazil?"
"It indeed is"

Holmes looked around for a while and after he was satisfied with his opinions, he left.

"That old woman, if I'm right, is Mrs. Oakwood", he told me later at our lodging.

...

That's it for now. Lemme know about it!

Ciao, soon.

Girl you rock it again! I am just full of admiration at how you nail all these murder mysteries! The judgement blew me away and this is another one that has great potential and written with so much care and well crafted words! The description is vivid and I could totally imagine Benedict or RDJ and Jude Law in this!
About the murder I have my doubts on Mrs Oakwood or should I say Mrs Scott? Well once Mrs Scott was introduced I could smell something fishy because she refused to let them in and I thought its one of the two women, Mrs Scott or Mrs. Oakwood. Well how did Holmes figure that they were the same person? Something to do with the mantelpiece?

Oh my Mahi!!!! This is sheer brilliance. I loved the language to begin with. Where were you when I needed a good read?!? Gosh, Watson's thoughts... I could literally visualize everything. I am intrigued about who the murderer is. And Mrs. Oakwood... she seems fishy... I loved this! I am looking forward to the next update. So please update soon <3

Unreswa!

Mahi, this is amazing, and I could readily visualise the duo of RDJ-Jude in this. Not just them, I think Ben and Martin too, but I have that one notch higher fondness for Jude Law as Watson! 😆
Anyway, that aside, I love how, from the word go, you've started the mystery, the whole set up, the scenario, and a manner that only Sherlock could have! I can't wait for the next part! Do give it to us, soon! 😳

^Sort of! I couldn't manage without the altitude of floors. Apart from high rise buildings, there's not much of any present facts. 😆
