CHAPTER 3: THE BEGINNING
Next morning.

Jai and anika leave for their destination.

Nani's house

nani- toh yeh h wo chirkoot. Kya choose kiya h ani.

Anika- jai naam h uska n pls we r getting late nani. Baksh de hume.

Rajjo's place

Rajjo- arre toh aa gayi tum. Aisa kya jaadu chal gaya ki big b ko chod ke humare peeche.

Anika- aunty pls story. Hum dono ki job ka sawaal h

Jai- dono ki?

Anika stomps on jai's feet.

Rajjo- yeh kahaani toh maine bhi suni hai. Baat takreeban 1924 ki h, Bengal. Ek maharashtrian couple Kolkata me rehte the. Do bacche the badi beti aur chota beta.

Jai (whispers)- agar yeh saas bahu nikli na I'll sue you.

Anika- shut up.

Rajjo- haalat aise ban pade ki biwi chal basi.

Flashback

1924 bengal

v.o. (rajjo)- shantaram naik naam tha uska. Beti toh phir bhi badi ho gayi thi bete ki badi chinta lagi rehti thi. Use sambhaalne ke liye dhund raha tha daai amma.

Shantaram (thinks)- kaisa imtehaan hain yeh. Kaise sambhaalu iss nanhi si jaan ko? Aai bhi toh Gujarat me hain. Itne paise na uske paas h na mere paas ki iss bacche ko uske paas chod aau.Yeh toh log bhi apne nahi. Agar rozgaari ka sawaal na hota toh yahamaaya bhi na hota.

Suddenly a quarreling noises from outside snaps him out of his thoughts.

Two women were quarreling outside.

Shantaram- ki holo dada? ( what happened dada?) Yeh jhagda kaisa.

Man- arre babu, wahi betana( salary). Kaun bataye ab bechaare garib ke pet ko maar ke na jaane kya milega. Roz bindiya aakar inn logo ke bartan maanjti hai aur inn logo se chand paise bhi nahi nikalte.

Shantaram- accha yeh baat yeh. Lekin yeh log use uski maa par kyun taane de rahe hain?

Man- bindiya ki maa yehi paas factory me kaam karti hain. Kuch arse pehle haadsa ho gya. Machine chal gayi unk haath par. Tab se kuch ubhar nikla h ungliyon ke beech.zaahir baat hain ab ye kam padhe likhe logo ko iski kya samajh. Unhe toh yeh bimari lagti hain jo waqt ke saath bindiya ko bhi ho jayegi. Isi darr se koi uss bechari ke liye koi rishta nahi laata. Agar rishta aa bhi jaye toh toot jata hain.

At night

Shantaram, disturbed and uncomfortable was constantly changing his sides words from the day echoing in his ears. The only name that possessed his brain was bindiya.

Days passed by, shantaram was in search of bindiya. But couldn't find her anywhere.

Enquiring at places where she worked he got the address where she lived. To his relief her mother was home.

Shantaram- namashkar.

Bindiya's mom- Namaste. maap korben. ( forgive me) Hum aapko nahi pehchane.

Shantaram- ji main aapse bindiya ka haath maangne aaye hoon.

Bindiya's mom- aao na babu. Basa. ( take a seat)

There was an eerie silence between the conversation. Shantaram was uncomfortable being caught in an awkward situation of proposing his own marriage.

Bindiya's mom- yeh sab to theek hain. Par ladka kaun h?

Looking at him suspiciously. His face spoke volumes about his age

Shantaram- main hi hoon mataji.

Bindiya's mom- aapke maa baba?

Shantaram- baba toh nahi hain. Maa Gujarat main hoti hain.

Bindiya's mom- shakal se bangali toh lagte nahi ho. Ho kaun?

Shantaram- maharashtrian.

His throat had gone sore.

Shantaram- Aamaar teshtaa peyechhe ( i am thirsty)

Bindiya's mom- ruko. laate hai.

He was drinking water for the 6th time since he had come. He had never thought that it would be so difficult.

Bindiya's mom- Tumi kee karo? ( what do you do?)

Shantaram- sarkaari naukri hain.

Bindiya's mom started considering the proposal seriously.

Shantaram then spilled the beans of his first wife his children and the mishap which again brought them back to square one.

Bindiya's mom- otho (get up)

Sensing the impending storm shantaram tried to change its direction by bringing up bindiya's marriage issue which had turned worse coz of her mother's injury.

The emotional blackmail was something that worked always.

Considering all the sides one thing was clear that both of them were avictim to the unusual circumstances.

Being from different castes there was always a fear of social scrutiny. To avoid this the ceremony was was a private affair.

Shantaram had written a letter to his mother informing her of the wedding. But coz of lack of finances she couldn't attend the wedding but could only send her blessings through a letter.

The wedding took place.

Bidaai

Bindiya's mom- bindiya, Aamaar Bhaalo Laagtchey (i feel happy)

Bindiya- Jaani ( i know)

Bindiya's mom- Aabaar esho ( do come)

Bindiya- Aabaar aashbo ( i will come)

But both of them knew this was a fake promise that they made to each other. It was eminent that the news of intercaste marriage would no longer be hidden and as it would spread it would be difficult for them to meet each other.

Bindiya knew this society wouldn't let her mother live if she ever visited her again and vice versa. Owing to all the hurdles she pledged that she would never see back for the sake of her mother.

*flashback ends*
