Part 11

Ashtaavasu--Shantanu-Ganga

Bharat, The Son Of Dushmant And Shakuntala, Grew Up To Be The Greatest Ruler Of All Times. He Was Better Known By The Title Of Saarvabhaum Raajchakravarti. (The King Of All Kings And Teritorries) . One Of The Kings of His Dynasty, Named Hasti, Who Found The Capital City Of Hastinapur. Four Generations After Hasti, The Kingdom Became Famous As Kurujangal, After The King Kuru, Who Ruled It And Took In To It's Height. The Place Where Kuru Spent His Last Years In Penance Was Known As Kurukshetra. After Seven Generations, King Pratip Ascended The Throne, And His Son Was, Shantanu, Who Was Previously A King (Who Fell From Heaven After He Misbehaved With Ganga) Called Mahabheesh.

Once The Ashta Vasus (Eight Gods) - Dhara, Anala, Anila, Aha, Pratyusha, Prabhas, Som And Dhruv - Were Flying Over The Ashram Of Sage Vashishth, One Of Their Wives Spotted A Beautiful Cow, Who Was Actually Kamdhenu Nandini (The Wish-fulfilling Cow). She Was At Once Desperate To Have The Cow. So, Her Husband Prabhas Stole Her For His Wife.

But Rishi Vasishth Came To Know Of This Immediately Through His Yogic Power, And Cursed All Of Them To Be Born As Humans On The Earth. When They Pleaded For Forgiveness, The Sage Took Mercy On Them And Said, "The Seven Of You, Will Die As Soon As You Are Born, And Will Be Freed Of My Curse. But Prabhas, (Called Dyu In Some Versions) You Will Remain As A Mortal And Live A Long And Painful Life."

The Vasus Went To River Ganga And Explained The Story, "Mother Ganga, As We Do Not Want To Be The Children Of Humans, Will You Be Our Mother ? You Are Insensitive And Devoid Of Emotions, So We Would Be Saved Of The Sin Of Leaving Our Mother In Pain, If You Throw Us Into Your Waters As Soon As We Are Born."

Ganga Agreed. She Had Got A Chance To Pay Back Mahabheesh By Making His Life A Little More Miserable Than It Was.

Pratip Saw A Beautiful Lady Walking Towards Him With The Rare Calm Grace Of A River As It Was In The Plains. Her Silky Hair Had A Slight Blue Tint In Them. She Wore A Soothing Bluish-Pink Garment. Her Eyes Had The Aloofness Of A River When It Crushed The Boulders On Its Way, As Well As The Captivating Indulgence Of The Unstable Waves Of The Flood. She Slowly Approached Pratip, And Before He Could Decipher The Meaning Of Her Silent Expression, She Had Made Herself Comfortable On His Right Thigh.

She Spoke With The Inescapable Sweetness Of A Waterfall,"King, I Am A Devkanya (Goddess), And I Want You To Marry Me."
"
But I Can't, As You Are Seated On My Right Thigh, A Seat Reserved For Daughters And Daughters-in-law.
" Said Pratip Working Hard To Control His Wrath And Amusement. The Lady Smiled, "Okay, So I Shall Come Back To Marry Your Son. But, Tell Him That He Shall Not Stop Me From Doing Anything Or Question Me. Remember This, Or Else, I Have Enough Influence Up In The Heavens, To Push You Down To Hell Without Any Sin." She Rose And Left, Leaving The King Thoroughly Amazed And Worried About The Mental Stability Of The Woman He Had Just Encountered.

King Pratip And King Queen Performed A Penance And Received Shantanu As Their Son. Pratip, On His Deathbed, Revealed To Shantanu About The Lady And Said, "Please, If She Comes Back, Do Not Ask Her Who She Is Or Stop Her Or Scold Her For Any Thing She Does."

One Day, On Seeing A Beautiful Woman On The Banks Of River Ganga, And Asked For Her Hand. Devi Ganga Repeated Her Conditions Which Were Accepted By The King. One By One, They Had Seven Sons, Each Of Who Were Thrown Into The Waves Of River Ganga. After Throwing Them, Ganga Used To Say, "Lo, My Child, I Fulfilled Your Wish." Shantanu Was Shattered From Within But Stayed Quiet, The Conditions Of Ganga Flashing Through His Mind, As The Goddess Stood Before Him, Smiling Shyly.

Upon The Birth Of Their Eighth Son, Shantanu, Unable To Stay Silent, Asked Ganga For An Explanation. Ganga Told Him The Entire Story Of The Ashtavasus And Left With Their Eighth Son, Promising To Return The Boy As Soon As He Was Old Enough To Be A King.

Devavrat Bheeshm--Shantanu-Satyavati

A Long Time Passed. Shantanu Now Avoided All Kinds Of Women And Ruled His Kingdom Efficiently. One Day, When He Went To The Banks Of River Ganga, He Saw A Tall And Handsome Boy, Who, On Seeing Him, Immediately Hypnotized Him And Vanished.

Shantanu, Out Of Doubt, Summoned Ganga And Demanded His Son. Ganga Smiled And Stretched Out Her Hand To Catch The Boy Who Then Stood By His Mother Smiling Shyly At The Stranger, Who Was Supposed To Be His Father. Ganga Said, "This Boy Has Learnt The Vedas From Rishi Vashishth, And Warfare From Rishi Parashuraam. He Is Now Perfect For The Highly Esteemed Throne Of Hastinapur. Take Him And Crown Him The King." Saying Thus, Ganga Vanished, And Devavrat, The Boy, Went With His Father, Feeling Rather Lost Without His Mother. Shantanu Made Devavrat The Crown Prince, Who Soon Became The Loved One Of All The People Of Hastinapur.

After Four Years, King Shantanu Went Into The Forest and A Beautiful Fragrance Pulled Him Along. After Walking For A Yojan, He Finally Spotted The Beautiful Lady From Whom This Fragrance Originated. she Introduced Herself As The Daughter Of Daas-maharaj, The King Of The Fishermen, Yojangandha Satyavati.

King Shantanu Immediately Went To Daas-raaja And Asked For The Hand Of The Maiden. Daas-raaja Replied, "I Feel Honored That You Came To My Humble Village For The Sake Of My Daughter, But She Shall Only Be Given To You If You Promise To Make Her Son And My Grandson The King, Or Else, You Can Forget Her." The King Did Not Dare To Promise, But Could Not Forget The Girl Either.

Clever Devavrat Soon Figured Out The Problem Of His FatherBy Following Him To The Bank Of Ganga Where Satyavati Used To Row A Boat And Went To Daas-maharaaj. He Demanded An Explanation For His [Devavrata's] Father's Sadness. On Hearing The Conditions Laid Down By The Fisherman, He Said,

"I Hereby Take An Oath Which No One Other Than Me Can Take. I Renounce The Kingdom Of My Father This Very Moment, Thus Clearing The Path For The Children Of Your Daughter To Be The King."

Daasraaj Said, "I Am Now Freed Of All Worries Regarding Your Interference, But What About Your Children ? Will They Adhere To Your Oath ?"

"They Won't. They'll Not Need To, Because I Now Take Another Oath : To Stay A Bachelor For The Rest Of My Life."

Daas-raaja Said, "I Will, I Will, O Pious Prince, I Will Give My Daughter To Your Father. And We Shall Be Indebted To You Till The Last Breath Of Our Life."

Flowers Rained From The Sky. A Voice Boomed Out, "Bheeshm ! Bheeshm ! (Terrible ! Terrible !)" Devavrat Took Satyavati To Hastinapur, And Gave Her To His Father. King Shantanu Was Overwhelmed To Listen To The Story. He Exclaimed, "O My Son, You Are Terrible. You Shall Be Known As Bheeshm Or The One Who Accomplishes Impossible Tasks With Ease. With All My Good Deeds, I Bless You Thus That You Shall Not Die Until You Wish To."

"Father, I Shall Use Your Boon Only For The Welfare Of The Kururashtra."
