The song is Don't Charge Me For The Crime by the Jonas Brothers :)
This is life in this world
Some things go right
Some things go wrong
It's just how the world can be
People just want to be free
Yeah
Derek paced back and forth in his cell. He couldn't wrap his mind around how his best friend had ratted him out. True, he couldn't have expected anyone to go to jail in his place but Jeremy could at least have had the decency to let him get away before the police caught him. All he ever wanted was to be truly free. Free of everyone and everything that had ever held him back from doing exactly what he wanted. But that was life. Sometimes things went right, sometimes they went wrong' just like they did in the court-room yesterday.
The verdict came in and it said I was guilty
I looked at the judge, "Hey America built me."
Tried to get rich but they labeled me filthy
Only God can judge me, touch me, feel me.
Derek was sitting in the court-room, his fists clenched and his cheek twitching. The verdict was about to come in any minute now. Derek inhaled deeply, longing for it to be over. He wanted whatever was going to happen to be over and done with. He knew that the chances of him getting away scot-free were slim' but he still couldn't help hoping. He fixed his eyes on the judge as he prepared to speak. He didn't hear anything the judge said apart from two words that seemed to linger in the air, hours after he said them. Pronounced guilty. Suddenly, Derek felt angry. He started to shout.
"Hey, America built me!" he yelled. "All I did was try to get rich in a short time' you don't have the right to decide if I'm guilty or not! Only God can judge me, touch me and feel me! You all have no idea what you're dealing with here!"
That was all he could say before a police officer snapped handcuffs on him and led him away to prison.
My friend calls me at nine o clock
Says get the car it's time to rock
Never heard him speak this way
Jeremy was in the middle of an extremely trying level of Call of Duty when his phone rang.
"Man!" Jeremy said in frustration, leaning over to pick it up.
"Hello?" Jeremy said.
"Get the car, Jer!" Derek's voice came on the other end.
"Get the car?" Jeremy asked. "Where?"
"To the old furniture shop downtown," Derek said.
"Dude, do you know what time it is?" Jeremy asked, checking his watch.
"Yeah man' it's time to rock!" Derek said laughing.
"Dude, are you all right?" Jeremy asked. "Have you been drinking or something?"
"Nope, I'm sober," Derek said. "Cross my heart and hope to die!"
"Fine," Jeremy said, giving in. "I'll meet you there in a few minutes."
I grab the keys and hit the road
It's all a flash but who would know
How the story would unfold
Don't charge me for the crime
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
Jeremy grabbed his car keys and hurried outside. It was drizzling lightly and Jeremy shivered, pulling his hoodie around him more tightly. He started the car and drove down the street to the old furniture shop. It was closed now' the windows were boarded up and the place looked dismal. Jeremy wondered why Derek had called him here of all places. If he had known just what Derek had done, he would never have gone there in the first place. But who would have known just what the night had in store for him? Only time would tell.
My friend gets in the car with bags
Filled to the top with loads of cash
Throws his pistol on the dash
Jeremy sat there impatiently for about five minutes and then the passenger door swung open. Derek threw in several bags stuffed with cash and slid into the car, slamming the door behind him.
"Dude," Jeremy said, staring at the bags. "Where did those come from?"
Derek threw a pistol on the dashboard and looked at him, grinning maniacally.
"Where do you think?" he said. "I went to the bank, that's all."
"I thought your parents weren't that wealthy," Jeremy said, refusing to believe what his mind was telling him. Derek couldn't have robbed a bank. The idea was too crazy to even contemplate.
"They're not," Derek said.
"What's with the pistol?" Jeremy asked.
"I used it to scare the people into getting me the money," Derek said. "After all, everyone needs a pistol to rob a bank, right?"
He says, "I'm sorry for the crime
That I've involved you in this time
You're the only friend I've got
So don't charge me for the crime."
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
"You what?" Jeremy gasped.
"Listen man," Derek said, becoming serious. "I'm sorry I've involved you in the crime. I really am."
"Oh you are, huh?" Jeremy scoffed, his heart racing.
"Dude, you're the only friend I've got," he said, his eyes pleading. "Don't charge me for the crime, please."
Jeremy simply stared at him, dumbstruck.
I start to freak and scream so loud
Just like the females in the crowd
That's when he gets in my head
Suddenly, the consequences of the situation really hit home and Jeremy freaked out and started to scream. A distant part of his brain vaguely registered that he sounded just like the girls who came to see him play in the school auditorium. Derek stared at him, his brain furiously thinking about what to do to make Jeremy see his side of the story. That's when he got his idea' he would manipulate him.
You could live just like a king
With everything you ever need
All the dreams of every man
Don't charge me for the crime
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me'
"Hey man, listen to me," Derek said, grabbing Jeremy's arms. "Listen to me!"
"What?" Jeremy asked, his eyes glazed.
"If you help me get away this time," Derek said quickly. "I'll split half the money with you. Think about it. You could live just like a king with everything you'll ever need. That's what every man dreams of' and you can get it! Just don't charge me for the crime, please!"
Sirens sound and my heart was pounding
I looked at my man as the cops surround him
A teen on the scene with no objective
The American dream can be so deceptive
Just as Derek finished his little speech, the boys heard sirens. Their hearts pounded fiercely and Jeremy started the car with trembling hands and took off. In no time at all, the cops surrounded Jeremy's car and Derek looked at him. Jeremy was a teen on the crime scene with no objective and there was no way he would get away. Derek began to plan an escape route for himself and decided that he would say Jeremy pulled him into the plan, using force.
Now I see the flashing lights
There goes my future and my life
Now I've gotta do what's right
Jeremy saw the flashing lights and felt terrified. Right then, he could see his entire future falling to pieces right before his eyes. His life would be over if he let all this happen the way it was leading to. Now he had to put friendship and loyalty aside and do what was right. It was the only way he would get his life back.
I stop the car and throw the keys
Out of the window sets me free
I throw the pistol in the back
Jeremy decisively brought the car to a screeching halt and turned off the engine.
"What are you doing?" Derek hissed in fright. "Start the car and let's get out of here!"
Jeremy stared at Derek for a moment and then shook his head.
"No, Derek," Jeremy said, throwing the keys out of the window. "Now I've got to do what's right."
"What do you mean?" Derek demanded.
"It means," Jeremy said quietly, throwing the pistol in the back seat. "That you're busted.
I throw him out of the car
And say, "You know me well
I'm not going to jail
I'm not paying your bail
Believe me when I say
They won't charge me for the crime."
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
Wrong place, wrong time
Don't charge me for the crime
Jeremy got out of the car and went round to the passenger side. He opened the door roughly and pulled Derek out, throwing him violently to the ground.
"What the heck are you doing man?" Derek groaned, clutching his side.
"You know me real well, Derek," Jeremy said. "And you definitely know that I have no plans whatsoever of throwing away my future just to get you out of this crazy mess you've gotten into. I'm not going to pay your bail, I'm not going to jail and let me tell you this Derek. They are not going to charge me for the crime."
"Jer," Derek said weakly. "You can't do this to me."
"I'm sorry," Jeremy said grimly. "This is your mess, not mine."
The police cars pulled over and snapped handcuffs on Derek. They asked Jeremy for a statement which he gave willingly and apart from a warning not to mix with the wrong sort, they let Jeremy off the hook. He watched as Derek was led off and his heart constricted as he thought of what would happen to him. He felt sorry for him even after everything had happened and he wished that things would work out for Derek in the future.
