Birthday Party
"Go to hell." Sneha announced placidly, playing with the blue bells at the end of her dupatta. "Don't dare to spoil my mood."
"I have no inclination to spoil mine standing here talking to you." Rishi shot back, picking up a glass of cola from the table.
She stared awhile. "Sorry aren't you that we aren't serving alcohol for my son's sixth birthday party?"
"Our son, let me correct you. And don't throw your demons on me; they are ugly when not cosmetic-ized."
"Oh you are impossible- Oh hey Siddharth, didn't you get a birthday cap?" She smiled at the little boy hunting for something on the table with a disdainful expression. "Let me get you one. When are your Mamma and sister coming?"
Rishi shook his head at her receding figure before changing into a smile as one of his colleagues dropped in.

It was Arun's sixth birthday party and he was in a glossy black, king-of-the-occasion suit. He was proud of the way the buttons glistened in the light and was explaining a self-hypothesized button-shine mechanism to one of his friends from Summer Fields School. The balloons on the walls fluttered in the breeze in all colours of white, blue and red.
"I want some red balloons too Mamma!" He had remarked earlier that evening, when the decorations were still on.
"You like red big boy?" Rishi had interjected. "Girly colour don't you think?"
"Um, it will go well with the cake..." He averted his eyes, focusing on the streamers that were being wrapped around the curtains.
Sneha and Rishi looked at each other, in competing, who-fed-him-that glances. They were typical, upper middle class parents, new entrants into the nouveau-riche category. Rishi had recently been promoted at work and with his seven figure salary turning to eight, he looked every bit of the new senior project-manager.
"Come along na Didi..." Sneha's younger sister called out. "And you too jeeju..." Mitali was a hit with the kids; squeals of Mitali Didi would fill the air each time she came to visit. She was engrossed now in an animated game of passing the cushion.
"Let's go." Rishi whispered, winking at Mitali. "At least there's someone who cares to smile at a kid's birthday party."
Sneha made a face, her blue chandelier earrings entangling with her hair.
"So who's getting all the chocolates out here gang?" Rishi asked as he seated himself beside Arun.
"Siddharth's been stealing them all." A plump kid declared. "There's something fishy about his cap."
Rishi made a comical face and as everyone looked on, Siddharth's cap suddenly dismantled, three chocolates wrapped in silver paper falling out and dropping on the carpet.
"Don't worry darling," Sneha said as she put an arm around the beetroot-red Siddharth, "I will fix you chocolates separately and we'll not let Rishi Uncle know. Not that he knows much anyway." She shrugged as he clicked his tongue.
***
"Do you remember di, how you first met jeeju on a party like this?" Mitali grinned as she met Sneha near the snacks counter.
It had been a goofy Tom and Jerry theme birthday party of one of her college friend's kids. She had gone dressed as a red carrot with a crown of green leaves on her head. Rishi had come dressed as cheese with several rat holes in his chees-y overcoat.
"Carrots used to be red and delicious back then... far too dear now they are." Rishi served himself some paneer pakore, intentionally bumping into Sneha's plate.
She was thinking of a retort sharp enough to fire when he twisted her head in the direction of the kids. "Time for cake-cutting Wide-Eyed Miss Carrot. Or do you plan to send the kids back hungry?"
Mitali chuckled and went to call all the kids from their various activities of balloon pulling, spray painting and hide and seek behind the living room sofa.
***
Six little candles burnt brightly on a brown and white football cake. Sneha had wrapped a fruit knife with a bright blue ribbon.
"So are we all set?" said Rishi, preparing to help Arun with extinguishing the candles.
"Oh no Papa, not quite yet." Arun repeated, the third time in five minutes.
Siddharth's face fell. He walked a little away and seated himself on the sofa.
"What's going on Junior? What are we waiting for?" Rishi asked, looking at his watch. It was almost eight and with dinner still to go, it wouldn't be before ten that he would be done with dropping all the kids home.
Arun looked helplessly around. "Nothing Papa, it's just too early isn't it? Not even dark yet..."
"It's getting to dinner time sweetheart. Is something the matter?" Sneha asked even as hungry young eyes bored into him in various stages of frustration.
Arun fidgeted with the knife, trying to frame a sensible answer. The door opened just then and a cute little six year old girl in a carrot-red frock walked in.
"Sorry we are late Sneha." Her Mom smiled, looking around. "Siddharth's class teacher suddenly called up and I ended up listening to a half hour lecture on how he isn't doing his homework."
The little girl looked around as well, her hair tied up in two ponytails. Her eyes met Arun's and she smiled shyly.
"Papa I was thinking," declared Arun, "let's cut the cake."
Surprised, Sneha looked at him, only to see him grinning broadly at Siddharth's little sister. Her gaze rested on Rishi. "Of course." she said even as Rishi smiled and entwined his fingers in hers.

Hey Debby,
You won't believe whats the time here! I decided to have some fun hehe. Reading your stories is entering into a different world with its own wonders. I love the way you share all these wonders with us.
Sneha and Rishi's fights and just them together were a riot hehe. But what was the most beautiful part was the way you connected their love story to their six year old's potential love story. I feel bad, see he is just six and he has already found that someone special and I am still on the quest, I better put on my binoculars and start searching for him. Binoculars as he has to come from saat samandar par hehe.
It was such a delight reading this wonderful story as always. Debs compile all of this in a book and you should consider getting it published, i am telling you it would be amazing to have many many more readers all around the world. I hope you would give it a thought.
God bless you always.
