Iqbal Khan to host Sambhav Kya on 9X

9X has a spate of shows in the offing and one of them is Siddharth Kak's Sambhav Kya. The show is reportedly on the lines of Star One's Maano Ya Na Maano which was hosted by Bollywood actor Irrfan Khan.

According to a source from the production house, "This bi-weekly show will be hosted by Iqbal Khan and will air on Fridays and Saturdays. The show is slated to air from 10 October in the primetime slot and the first episode will showcase three stories based on true incidents. Each story will run for 15 minutes."

Iqbal Khan said, "I am busy in a shot please call me after 5 minutes." We tried contacting him again but he remained unavailable.

Producer Siddharth Kak, Cinema Vision India, confirmed the news but refused to divulge any details. He said, "Yes, I am doing a show for 9X but as far as its storyline and concept is related I can't divulge anything as yet. I can get back to you once I come to know the promotional strategies of the channel."

Indrani Mukerjea, CEO and Founder INX Media, remained unavailable for the comment.

It's Ramzan time and Iqbal Khan, like every year, has kept rozas this year too.

"We break the rozas on the sets most of the times, so it becomes celebration time everyday between 6.30 and 7 in the evening," says Iqbal. Wife Sneha is busy pampering him with yummy dishes whenever he's at home for iftaar. "I love being at home at that time," smiles Iqbal.

For the first time, Iqbal will be seen hosting a show on 9X. But before you think it's a music or dance reality show, let us clarify that this one's going to be different. "It's somewhere between fiction and non-fiction," says Iqbal about the show Sambhav Kya?, "There will be stories based on facts including supernatural and unusual."

So was he too surprised with some of the stories? "Oh yes all the time!" exclaims Iqbal. The actor admits that he has received offers in the past to host reality shows but he could not see himself doing them.

"One should do something keeping one's personality in mind. I feel I fit better into something a little serious like this," he says. Iqbal also adds that he isn't nervous about being a host but is in fact, looking forward to it. "I'm at ease here. It's just me and the camera," he explains.

For Iqbal, it's the first time that he's doing two shows at a time, with Waaris being on air too. "Sambhav Kya takes just three or four days from the month so it's not taking too much of my time. I still like doing one thing at a time," says Iqbal. And what about Waaris, is he happy with the way it's progressing? "Yes, we have a great story line and I'm very happy to be a part of this show. As long as they stick to the script, I'll be happy doing it," he adds. Now that's the Iqbal we know!

What's brewing in Waaris?

It is television's golden rule that it's the TRPs that always determine the future course of action. Smriti's Iraani's Sarkaresque show Waaris hasn't been fetching the desired TRPs thus the focus is slightly shifting from the gangster men to the sobbing ladies.

An actor on condition of anonymity says, "The show hasn't been getting the desired TRPs thus the track will focus more on the ladies in the house. Presently, the track centers around Gayatri (Shilpa Shinde) losing her baby. Thereafter, it will be new girl Akanghsa Rawat who'll take centre stage. The plot will then revolve around the love story between Ganga and Shaurya (Yuvraj Malhortra)."

Adding further, our source says, "Rudra Pratap (Ashish Vidyarthi) kills Ganga's family. Out of guilt, Rudra adopts Ganga, who later marries Shaurya. However, trouble brews when Ganga learns the truth."

Creative Head Meet Kohli though sings a different tune. "On the contrary, we've been receiving fan mails that they are tired of the sobbing ladies. We'll be having lots of action soon. After all, viewers want to see Shankar holding a gun."

Are you happy with the TRPs? Meet replied, "Obviously, we aren't generating the desired TRPs. However, you never generate high rating in the 11.00 pm slot. We did reach a TRP of 1.5 in the initial weeks after the launch, thereafter we've been hovering around the 0.9 mark. Ideally, we'd love to match up to Kayamath which generates a average TRP of 2."

feel so proud to own a plush house in Mumbai - Shilpa Shinde

Money. That's what drives everyone in the final analysis, whether in the glamour world of acting or the hard grind of scripting and producing. Cashin' In sits down with TV celebs to know well they handle their financial matters and tracks their spending patterns.

Marathi mulgi Shilpa Shinde who is currently seen in Maayka and Waaris is a self made woman. One of the reasons for Shilpa took to acting was because she wanted to be financially independent. She never liked asking for money from her parents. Today, she is not only financially independent but also financially secure.

Get a peek into the finances of Shilpa Shinde exclusively on Tellychakkar.

How important is money for you?

Money is not everything for me but money can sure do a lot of things. Money is needed for everything today and it can't be denied.

Are you an impulsive buyer?

No, I am a practical person and I have a control on my desires. I buy things only if it is worth. I don't get driven by anything.

What are the investments you have made?

I have made investments in property and insurance policies. I don't prefer to make a lot of investments as I believe in living for the moment.

What is your most expensive purchase?

My house on Malad Link road. I bought it two years ago for fifty five lakhs. I feel so proud to have bought a plush house in Mumbai all on my own.

Do you feel financially secure?

Yes. An actor's profession is such that you tend to feel financially insecure but I don't feel so. Having a house in Mumbai city is the biggest security.

Feeling financially secure or insecure is individualistic. It is all in the mind.

Who handles your expenses?

I handle my expenses. Currently I am the sole earning member of my family, so they leave it to me to handle my expenses. Sometimes, I do take advise from them.

What was your first salary? What you did with it?

It was Rs. 1,200. I earned it by doing internship as an accountant when I was studying in college.

How much money do you carry every day?

I don't carry more than Rs. 1,000 every day. I use credit and debit cards for my expenses.

Any advice for investors?

Investment is very important but one shouldn't go overboard with it. I don't understand why people cut out so much money from their present to use in future. I mean what is the sense in wearing diamonds when you have wrinkles on your face.

Serials back on track

Its good news for serial lovers. Striking film and TV workers are back at work as most of their demands have been met. The strike was called off last evening after the FWICE signed a MoU with the producer?s union. Except for the demand that foreigners not being permitted to work in the industry all other demands have been met. But it has been reported that if a foreign crew is hired to shoot in India then a few of the industry?s members will have to be included in the team. It has also been decided that neither a TV actor nor a worker will work beyond 12 hours.

According to Film and TV Producers Guild vice-president Dheeraj Kumar, work and shootings resumed at around 8 pm last night. Says Kumar, "There were issues regarding member-to-member working (no non-members of the FWICE should be used by members), shift timings and payments for longer hours. The revised wages had been agreed to 10 months ago but they accepted the terms and signed them today. It is a clear sign of the solidarity in the industry that the three producers' associations and the workers' association sat down to find a solution for the benefit of the industry."

With shooting having commenced for most serials and reality shows its good news for couch potatoes as there is no stopping their favourite soap.

Vijaydashmi - Victory of Good over Evil

India is the land of cultures and festivals. As the month of October sets,we begin it with the celebration of ...

Yuvraj Malhotra:

Character you like the most from Ramayan:
Ram is my favorite.

If given a chance, which character you would want to portray on screen from Ramayan and why:
I would love to play Ramji, but I will never take my wife to the jungle for 14 years and will never keep her away from me.

Your plans for Dussehra this year:
I will bring an effigy of Ravana and burn it on the sets... (laughs). Playing the lead in the show leaves me with very little time for myself. So I will have a working Dussehra this year.

Yuvraj Malhotra sacked from Waaris

A brawl with a production manager proved costly for Yuvraj Malhotra as he ended up being thrown out of Smriti Iraani's show Waaris on Zee TV.

A little birdie from the sets informs, "This incident happened a week ago. Yuvraj was annoyed that he was shooting for more hours. He then had a heated argument with the production manager and soon they were exchanging blows. The matter was reported to CINTAA (Cine and TV Artist's Association) who immediately ordered for Yuvraj's removal. Yuvraj hasn't registered himself with CINTAA."

Yuvraj, who plays the character of Shaurya, says, "Smriti Iraani simply didn't want me in the show. All this drama was created to have me ousted. Though, I'm not a member with CINTAA yet, I have applied for the membership. My card is expected to come within a month."

Elaborating on the unfortunate event, Yuvraj says, "CINTAA had issued a directive that no artist should be working for more than twelve hours a day. However, right since beginning, I have been working more than 12 hours for this show. It was well past 9.00 pm and we were supposed to shoot for a short scene. It was 11.30 pm and the production guys were simply joking around and showed no intent of finishing the work. That day, I wasn't feeling well, plus I was badly in need of sleep. I requested these guys to hurry up but there was no change. It was then that I lost my cool and things went out of hand. I have never come across such a disorganized production house before."

We called up producer Smriti Iraani but she asked us to call the channel PR before disconnecting the line.

CINTAA president Dharmesh Tiwari and Zee TV programming head Ajay Bhalwankar remained unavailable for comment.

Meanwhile, it was also buzzed that Yuvraj's co-actor Iqbal, who was upset with the turn of events has tendered his resignation. Iqbal though rubbished such news. "No, I'm not quitting and if ever I were to quit a show it would be because of the content and nothing else."

Dirty secrets emerge as Smriti boots out Yuvraj

by Meenakshi Shankar

Oct 21, 2008, Mumbai

It's a pitched battle between 'Waaris' producer Smriti Irani and actor Yuvraj Malhotra. If sources are to be believed, the two have been spewing venom at each other. And now, Smriti has drawn first blood by throwing Yuvraj out of her show. The reason cited is 'goondaism' on the sets. Wait, did we hear that right? We thought it's just our politicians who throw their weight around. But as the story unfolded, we found out that this small screen story has its fair share of politics and insinuations.

The story goes that Yuvraj recently got into an altercation with a production unit member. So angry was Yuvraj that he beat up the unit member black and blue. The tough taskmaster that she is, Smriti immediately issued the marching orders to Yuvraj. And it seems that absolutely nothing will push her to change her mind. Not even the intervention of the channel head, with whom Yuvraj apparently has connections.

One only needs to look at Yuvraj's past behavior on sets to understand his innate violent streak. While shooting for Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan, he was smitten by his co actor Twinkle Bajpai. But when the lady spurned his advances, our hero whipped out a blade and slashed his wrist in true filmy style. No, the lady was not moved enough to fly into his arms. The only people who came running were the production members who rushed a hollering Yuvraj to the safety of medical care. News of the incident didn't make it far outside the sets, thanks to the highly placed officials in the channel who shushed everyone into silence.

With this latest misadventure, Yuvraj seems to have taken his role way too seriously. Incidentally, Waaris is a telly remake of Ram Gopal Varma's Sarkar. In the process, he has earned the ire of several production houses in the industry. One source says on condition of anonymity, "We all know who has been protecting him from being slandered. But merely being a toy boy isn't enough to ensure smooth sailing in the industry. After this incident, no production house would be willing to touch him with a ten feet barge pole."

We caught up with the actor for his side of the story and he fumed, "If the channel has indeed been protecting me, why am I out of the show? It's all planned by Smriti Irani. She had an issue with me right from day one and I never understood why." But pray, what had the poor unit member done to deserve the pasting? "The 'beating up into pulp' story is fiction. The production guys can say what they want to save their jobs. I have bruises too to prove that I was hit. I was unwell and was kept on wait. Like an emotional fool, to ensure that my show does well, I put in more than the stipulated hours. Yes, I did lose my cool when I saw nothing moving. And when I pulled my weight around, things got out of hand. But, then every fight has two sides to it. What is leaking out is merely putting me in a bad light! The production unit saw this as a chance to throw me out of the show and they grabbed it without a second thought." Wow, now isn't this story getting juicier by the minute?

From what we hear, Smriti indeed had an issue with the bloke. But as you would have guessed by now, the channel convinced (read arm twisted) her to give him a chance. When we quizzed Yuvraj about his much-touted 'connections', pat came the reply, "Name one actor who does not have connections with the channelEvery actor has a relationshipAnd there's nothing really right or wrong about it

" Now, we would have agreed with that if we didn't know more about his dubious connections. We understand that the actor shares a relationship between the sheets with the upper echelons of the channels. The long silence from Yuvraj that followed this question can be mildly described as 'shock'. In fact, so stunned was he that after his silence, he completely side-stepped the question. Not that our question needed any more answering.

As we ended our conversation with him, he was still scathing in his attacks on Smriti. "Smriti Irani is one producer who I will never work with. She may walk with a chip on her shoulder thinking she is the almighty personified, but she will fall and when she does, I will be watching her fall. In fact, I think she runs a cartel in this industry and everyone's scared about talking against her at the risk of losing their job."

Sigh! Nobody seems to be convinced. Not even his mighty 'connections' in the channel who chose to remain tight-lipped about the fiasco.

Mystery of Yuvraaj's exit

Yuvraaj Malhotra who plays Shaurya in Waaris, says he was given the boot after fighting with a unit hand but the producer, Smriti Irani's company, says he's welcome back.

So what's the deal?

We asked Yuvraaj why he was no longer in the Sony serial and he said: "The producers are not in favour of me and never wanted me to do the show," he, "but since I had a good relationship with the channel I was given a role."

Yuvraaj earlier acted in Betiyaan, which he also left. "I had done it for a year and I got bored," he explained, "I told the channel there was nothing interesting for me to do on that show."

He says they "were fine with my leaving. When they received the proposal for Waaris they told the production house that they would prefer me in the role of Shaurya."

But Smriti's production house, he claims, "never wanted me. They took me on because of the channel's insistence but they did not really want me."

What happened earlier this week, he added, was planned. "They sent over someone from the unit who began a quarrel with me for no reason and he hit me first."

Now he said it was up to the serial to take the next step. "They should either replace me or change the track. They're saying I'm not allowed to shoot because I'm not a part of the association."

Meet, from Smriti's production house said, Yuvraaj was kicking up a fuss over nothing.

"We cannot comment on this because the federation is looking into the matter, but Smriti is keeping her cool on this."

"We have no problem with Yuvraaj and if we replace him that will be bad for the show since the audience is familiar with his character," she said, "it is true that he was recommended by the channel but we have always felt him right for the role."

If he secured permission from the federation, she said, he would be back.

So will he? Watch this space!

Yuvraj apologises. May return to Waaris

Despite being fired for manhandling a unit member, Yuvraj Malhotra could still find himself back on Waaris. Though this could only happen if the union federation decides to forgive the actor.

A source from the production house says, "We haven't begun to look for a replacement yet as we're still hopeful that Yuvraj may return i.e. if the union federation decides to forgive him. Prior to this episode, Smriti and Yuvraj shared a healthy relationship. That is why we were taken aback when Yuvraj hit out against Smriti, who still wouldn't mind taking him back."

When contacted Yuvraj said, I'm not aware of this move. On my part, I approached CINTAA (Cine & TV Artists Association) and they told me to issue a letter of apology. I'm having this letter in my hand and I'm heading to CINTAA's office right now. What's happened is very unfortunate and something which can have a deep impact on my image and career. I have a long way to go in this industry."

Speaking on his equation with Smriti, he says, "Well, it's never been a goody goody relationship. Smriti and I share the same relationship as that of a producer and an actor. What's disappointed me is that the media have projected me as the villain. I too have suffered wounds. However, I'm ready to leave everything behind and patch up with everyone provided they too extend the olive branch."
