"Waaris" to debut on Zee TV

Zee TV, India's premier media and entertainment conglomerate on its expedition to explore different genres, brings to you a magnum opus "Waaris", a family drama set against the backdrop of the underworld starting from Monday, 28 July, 2008.The show will be aired from Monday to Thursday at 11pm.

Speaking on the launch, Mr. Ajay Bhalwankar, Programming Head Zee TV said, "It is an atypical illustrate of the "underworld" and its vicissitudes. Waaris comes as a perfect balm for those of you who are really craving for a different treatment. It is a hard hitting drama which deals with the ambiguities of life and portrays the stark reality of today. It's a mother's anguish over the unsafe lives of her children brought up in the confines of the underworld. " He further added, "Zee TV has been known to dabble in programs and content that are topical in nature and this story is no different".

The series also marks the comeback of Ashish Vidyarthi a formidable personality, donning the character which immortalized power, politics and fair play. Waaris also boasts of an enviable star cast consisting of Iqbal khan, Indira Krishnan, Shilpa Shinde, Yuvraj Malhotra and Rucha Guajrati .

About Waaris - 'Waaris' is a family drama set against the background of the underworld. It is the story Rudra Pratap Singh (Ashish Vidyarthi) who is an aging mafia don. He is married to Yashodhara (Indira Krishnan) and has two sons, Shankar (Iqbal Khan) and Shaurya (Yuvraj Malhotra). The story, as the name suggests is about the search of the true Waaris to the position created by the senior don.

RUDRA PRATAP SINGH (Ashish Vidyarthi), is a gentleman. He is soft spoken and prefers to listen instead of talking. But only Shankar knows that he uses his silences to gauge the true intentions of the person he is talking to.

YASHODA (Indra Krishnan), wife of Rudra Pratap, is an earth mother, a quiet, docile woman who handles her unusual family with a stoic resignation to her destiny. She advises her daughter-in-law Gayatri to do the same. They have married into this family and that cannot be changed.

SHANKAR (Iqbal Khan), Rudra Prataps'e eldest son, is an obedient, loyal son for whom his father's wish is a command. He is a self effacing and headstrong man, who has no control over his anger. He cannot tolerate anything against his father, not even from his own wife. He loves his younger brother Shourya and could kill in cold blood for him.

GAYATRI (Shilpa Shinde), Shankar's wife. She resents the fact that Shankar is a part of the underworld and the fact that her father-in-law has unfairly protected Shourya from all of itl. She too wants a decent life for her unborn child like Shourya enjoys. She even confronts her husband for her rights to a decent life.

Shourya (Yuvraj Malhotra), is Rudra Pratap's younger son. Bright, sporty, Studious, Shourya's only aim in life is to fulfill the dream of his father which is to get good education, get respected and get honoured. Shourya does not know that his father is a mafia don.

Iqbal Khan doesn't like partying

The actor says that post his marriage, parties just mean nothing but a social obligation

He is one of the most sought after small screen faces but he is keeping a low profile these days.

In fact, Iqbal Khan's appearances at the party circuit have decreased big time. But spot him on the sets and it is apparent that this happy-go-lucky guy who loved party hopping once has toned down a lot.

Ask him the reason and he winks, 'I believe I have a life beyond my work. When I am spending most of the time on the sets shooting, the few hours I get off it, belongs to my family. So, I prefer to stay away from my parties.'

Flashback to a year ago and this actor was omnipresent in most parties, TV dos and even Hollywood movie premieres!

'Well, I was not married then. Now, I am happily married. We go for parties if it's a social obligation, otherwise we try our best to avoid it. I am game for movie premieres, because I am a movie buff,' he adds.

Iqbal chose to make his comeback with Choona Hai Aasmaan a few months after quitting Balaji Telefilms. Has he left the show to be a part of Waaris?

'No. I quit Choona Hai Aasmaan and later I got the offer for Waaris. I did not leave it because I had to join Waaris,' he says.

Iqbal was very unhappy with the way the show was treated by the channel.

'The show started off really well and it really had good content. But, channel did not do any publicity at all. To add to the woes, the time slot was altered suddenly which hampered the show. I was not happy with the treatment meted out to the show. So I preferred to leave,' he ends.

Talking point with ashish vidyarthi
The actor will be seen in a Hindi serial after almost a decade
You're returning to Hindi television after a long time with Waaris.
Yes, after 10 years. The last I did was Dastan on Zee TV. What was on all this while?
During Dastan I was working in films. For the last seven years, I've been busy doing films down South. I did very few Hindi films but I also did 72 films outside Hindi. After a long time, the first Hindi film that I signed was Red Alert by Anant Mahadevan. I'm also doing Shout by Wilson with Seema Biswas and Sushant Singh. Why didn't we see you in Hindi projects?
I took a break from Hindi films as all the roles offered were of villains which, after a point, became boring. So I decided on a sabbatical from Hindi films to reinvent myself. Our industry is very image-centered. I strode and carved a niche down south and in other languages. So, why Waaris?
It was the way the makers were pitching it. It isn't a typical story being told. Kamlesh Pandey is associated with the script and its essence really worked for me. I found it interesting. Besides, Smriti Irani, who does out-of-the-box stuff, is producing it. Waaris' promos remind of Sarkar. The buzz goes it's fashioned on Godfather.
The story is of a patriarch who runs an illegal business. The interesting bit is his concern about his two sons and how he's torn between their love. The story will appeal to a lot of people irrespective of their background. And your character?
I play Rudrapratap. Don't expect a typical don. He has immense power, but is at ease with it. It's understated. Now that you're back, will we see you more in Hindi films and serials?
I'm an actor. I never went away. Films came my way and I kept saying no. I was very much in Mumbai. Just as an actor wakes up every morning and goes to Filmistan Studio, I'd to fly to Chennai. I'm a travelling actor. Wherever I get a good role, I do.

What else is on?
Some interesting theatre. I've been doing the Hindi play Daya Shankar Ki Diary with Nadira Babbar. We've been invited to Lahore to stage two plays in November. I've also done Ottayan, a new Tamil play with Kavalam Narayana Pannikkar. I started blogging two years ago. I take pictures wherever I go and paste them on the blog with short paragraphs. We have also instituted an award, Vidyarthi Samman in the memory of my father. It's an acknowledgement of people who don't fall into any category of existing awards. They are a celebration of the unknown Indian who's been contributing to life but never been recognised.

Waaris a story related to the underworld: Ashish Vidyarthi
Ashish Vidyarthi, one of the most talented actors in our country is making a come back on television after 10 long years with Zee's upcoming soap Waaris. Having now done a hell lot of films, the actor had started his career on television with Mahesh Bhatt's Swabhiman.

Let us share some golden moments with this versatile actor and try to learn more about his real self and also his thought on the loss of creativity in current films.

Q. How does it feels to be making a come back on television after ten years?
A. I dont look at it as a come back. I am just doing an interesting role that was offered to me.

Q. What is Waaris the serial all about?
A. Waaris is a story of a family and like all other families even this family thinks that who would inherit the huge property of the family. It's a story related to the underworld.

Q. What character do you play in this serial?
A. My character's name is Rudrapratap. He is a father and except his elder son no one else in his family knows that he his connected with the underworld.

Q. So does the son take up the legacy of his father?
A. Hopefully we all will get to know about it in just 100 to 150 episodes (laughs).

Q. What one thing about the serial you liked most that made you accept it?
A. I was more attracted towards the story of this serial which it is not like the other daily soaps. This serial has emotions, action, family bonding and underworld.

Q How was it working with Bhushan Patel?
A. I have worked with him many times before also and it is always wonderful working with him.

Q. How is Smriti Irani as a producer?
A. I have seen a vision in her. She is not like other producers who come and pay you. I respect her a lot for it and I am really enjoying working under her production. I liked the way she has come out of her legacy and working. Besides doing her normal duty as a producer she also has a lot of creative ideas and thoughts for which I respect her.

Q. Any kind of creative inputs from her side during the shooting of this serial?
A. She (Smriti) is engaged with this serial in many ways. I very often ask her or call her whenever I have to inquire anything about the serial. It's a very open kind of atmosphere.

Q. Don't you think that with so many films being getting produced now-a-days, the creativity have got lost somewhere?
A. When you do your work some of it may not be liked by the audiences, but that doesn't mean you will stop working. This is our work and if you don't like one work of ours then we will try to do it better in our next performance. A regular film maker will always keep trying something new and creative.

Q. What do you think of reality shows?
A. Things which are being liked by people are good, that can be a reality show, a dance show or anything else. As long as it is entertaining people, it is a good thing.

Q. Apart from this serial aren't you doing any films now?
A. I am doing a film called Red Alert with Anant Mahadevan and then there is another film called Shout with Wilson where I play the lead character with Seema Biswas. Besides that I am doing four Tamil films and four Kannada film.

It looked like sabotage to me!'
You're playing a toughie in your new show Waaris...

Yes but I've always played a tough guy. You can't make me look cute! (laughs) But yes, it is a different kind of role and I'm very excited about playing it.

You will be seen playing a Don's son. Is it a negative character?

No, it's not a negative character. In fact, it's a very positive character. Shankar is a 'good' bad guy. He loves his family, worships his father and is madly in love with his wife. It's just that he is in a business that his family is in. They have all accepted it and are living with it. They do what they do. The only negative trait in him is that he has an anger problem. So if somebody else would probably have an argument, this guy would just pick up a gun and shoot!

Your show revolves around a mafia don who has two sons. Sounds familiar to the film Sarkar...

I think that's a co-incidence. I don't really see a major connect between this show and the film.

Your quit your last show Choona Hai Aasmaan. What was the reason?

I don't think the channel was interested in promoting the show. Even without promoting it, we managed to get in the TRPs and then they changed the time-slot. It looked like sabotage to me! The story track too changed. We didn't stick to the Air Force background. How can you have a show called Choona Hai Aasmaan without the Air Force background? Even at the beginning of the show, people had asked me what I would do if the story track changes and I had told them that I will quit the show.

So what if the story track for Waaris changes, would you stand by your statement?

If I'm promised a Mercedes and I'm given a Maruti, I won't drive it!

Now that reality shows are getting popular, would you like to participate in one?

I think reality shows are good to watch and maybe if I get a chance, I would host it. But I don't think I can participate in one because then there's too much of you in it and I'm not very comfortable with that.

How's married life with wife Sneha going?

Life is good. Sneha's teaching at a pre-nursery school and I'm getting to learn nursery rhymes that I've never heard of before. (smiles)

That might help you in future...

Inshallah!
some interviews abt waaris:

I did not meet Dawood Ibrahim or Chotta Shakil: Iqbal Khan

July 26th, 2008

Even though actor Iqbal Khan has done some memorable roles on television but the actor has always been termed to be a filmy material. The actor may not have yet got a chance to work in a movie but he surely has now got a filmy character to play in Zee's upcoming serial Waaris. Let's see what this talented actor has to say about his new show and many more.

Q. Can you brief us the story of Waaris?
A. It's a story of a family with some emotions in it, not like any other soap's family where the kitchen politics takes place. Everything revolves around the characters in the family and the backdrop of the family is making money by not the usual but in a different way. It has shades of underworld in it.

Q. What character you play in Waaris?
A. My character's name is Shankar. He is a family man, slightly brash, loves his family, respects his father and believes in taking his father's business ahead.

Q. What one thing about the serial attracted you the most?
A. The whole story idea of the show and also my character which is very interesting and has got a lot of shades.

Q. Did you have to make any kind of special preparation for this role?
A. I did not meet Dawood Ibrahim or Chotta Shakil. There is nothing like that, I am an actor I know how to do my job.

Q. All television serials start with a new concept but after few episodes they all become the same, what is your say on that?
A. I always say this and now also I say that when I was doing Choona Hai Aasmaan, I told the press that if that happens I will quit the show and that's why I left that show. Now also I say the same thing that as long as they remain fixed with the territory of the show I am in it or else I will leave it.

Q. How was it working with Ashish Vidyarthi?
A. Its great working with him. I think he is a great professional and a lovely human being. Whenever we have scenes together we have a lot of fun.

Q. Any kind of tips from him?
A. No we always discuss the scenes together before going for the shot. And in terms of tips I think he believes that an actor should be given freedom to do his work and I too believe in that.

Q. What kind of roles you would like to play?
A. I am an actor and I believe that I can play any character I want.

Q. Any dream role?
A. No dream role. I believe that dream role only happens when you play it and it becomes a success.

Q. Any films in your kitty'
A. No, nothing yet. I am happy doing whatever I am having in my kitty. At the same time, I am looking forward for a nice script to take on films but nothing has come across yet. As of now being a television actor, I am stuck to this project and will think of films only after some months.

some more here sorry could not paste da article due to repeated technical error. do bear wit me.

Shilpa doesn't want to work in K-camp

Shilpa Shinde, of Maayka fame, doesn't like being embroiled in controversies and is keen to clarify them.

The latest one being that she backed out of Siddarth Tewary's reality TV show Saas vs Bahu at the last minute. The production house in turn, lashed out at her and called her unprofessional.

Shilpa says, 'I was never keen on taking it up, but I didn't know how to say the same to the director. I never said yes, instead, I asked them to let me think about it.' Then why was the producer of the show, taken aback by her comments? 'It was a misunderstanding at their end. I never made any commitments to them.'

Not exactly a catfight, but there was another showdown that the actress had with co-star Neha Bamb. The fight started when Neha went to collect an award on her behalf and went on to say that it was rude on Shilpa's part not to attend the awards function. 'She said nasty things about me at the function and to top it all, she even lost my trophy. But it was a small issue blown out of proportion. Though we are not exactly close friends, we don't have any animosity as well. We now share a 'hi and bye' relationship. I don't have any friends in the industry and I don't intend to make any. It's just work and back to home routine for me,' she states in a matter-of-fact manner.

The actress will now be seen in Waaris opposite Iqbal Khan. Promising that her character Gayatri will not do the rona-dhona that she does in Maayka, she says, 'In this show I play a bold female, who is not afraid of expressing her thoughts. She manages to convince her husband and respects her in-laws. But she is not at ease with the fact that her father-in-law is an underworld don.' Does she relate to her on-screen character? 'Yes, I do. Her she-will-speak-what's-on-her-mind attitude is similar to mine,' she says.

The actress is also upbeat about working with Smriti Irani and feels that it gives her creative satisfaction. 'I interacted with Smriti once and it was great. She doesn't believe in getting into the nitty-gritties of creative work,' quips Shilpa.

The lady doesn't believe in hiding what's on her mind. While talking about her future plans, she candidly confesses, 'Working with the K-camp is definitely not on my agenda. I'm least interested in working with Balaji. I'm happy with my present production houses.'

And what does she do when she is not facing the camera? 'I cook and must confess that I am rather good at it. I also like painting,' she signs off.
'TV industry is driven by TRPs'

Actor Kiran Kumar has had a long career ' in Bollywood, in Gujarati films and television. Albeit, it is on television where he has gained popularity and adulation.

He has been a witness to the changes, and also has been a part of them. In a career spanning several decades, he's acted in over 200 Hindi films, more than 80 Gujarati films and also directed documentaries. 'When I watch films like Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, it occurs to me that the film is a proof of the multifold efforts of a number of people, bearing fruit. A lot of movies today are a sign of evolution of the film industry,' says Kiran.

What are his views about the small screen? 'The TRPs have changed the face of Indian television. They play a major role in how the script of a serial will change and what strategies will be employed by the channels and production houses. There is also a professional touch to every aspect of the industry now,' says Kiran.

Kiran is upbeat about his new
television show Waaris, and says, 'For a change, I am playing a character with shades of gray.' He also maintains that he absolutely loves what he does. He says, 'I can never imagine a life that is devoid of acting. I have always been an actor and I pray to God to make me an actor in my next birth too.'

SOME LATEST BYTES:
Sarkar inspires television show?
July 28, 2008

Waaris, a family drama set against the background of the underworld, tells the story of the true waaris for the position created by a senior don. The makers doesn't deny that the television show is inspired from the film Sarkar.

It is the story of Rudra Pratap Singh (played by Ashish Vidyarthi), an aging mafia don. He is married to Yashodhara (Indira Krishnan) and has two sons, Shankar (Iqbal Khan) and Shaurya (Yuvraj Malhotra). Gayatri (Shilpa Shinde) is Shankar's wife and Shaurya's girlfriend is played by Rucha Gujrathi.

Rajul Hegde caught up with Iqbal Khan for more on the serial. Excerpts:

The promos look similar to Sarkar.

I disagree. Waaris is the story of a family that does not deal with drugs or contract killings. We fight for the right cause.

Tell us about your character.

Shankar is the eldest son. He is obedient and loyal to his father. But he is also headstrong with an uncontrollable temper. He will react 500 times more strongly than I would. He would probably kill a person in a fit of anger.

Did you do any research to play Shankar?

I am a competent actor and the character too is not that complex. I know that I am not a very good actor but I know my job. We do not get sufficient time to do any research since it's a daily soap.

How was it working with producer Smriti Irani [Images] and Ashish Vidyarthi?

It is a very nice experience working with the production house, Ugraya. Smriti is a person, who gets creatively involved in her projects.

As for Ashish, he is a fantastic actor and before each scene, we discuss it and give our best shot.

Why did you leave Choona Hai Aasmaan?

The show was not promoted right. It changed track and did not stick to the Air Force background. I had told everyone when I joined the show that I would quit if the track lost focus.

What do you think of reality shows?

They are good to watch. I keep getting offers but I am not comfortable doing them. Someday, I would love to host a show.

Catch Waaris every Monday to Thursday at 11pm on Zee TV.

Shilpa: Excited about Waaris

The actress is relieved to be playing a deglamorous role

Shilpa Shinde is excited about her new show on Zee TV Waaris where she is playing Iqbal's goody- goody wife called Gayatri. The only problem is that she doesn't like her father-in-law's and husband's profession. Since Gayatri is pregnant she is not happy that her child will be born in such an environment.

Is the show a copy of Sarkar Raj? According to Shilpa Shinde, she will not call it a copy, but it's been inspired. After all most shows and films these days are inspired. She further added that the chemistry between Gayatri and Shankar in the show may even remind you of Rani Mukerji and Abhishek Bachchan in Yuva.

Shilpa feel that her look in Waris is completely different from the contemporary television scene. She sports a cotton saree and a gajra in her hair. And unlike the saas-bahu shows Waaris is a male dominated show but she accepts that shows often begin on a good note but they soon peter out. She really hopes Waaris will not go the Virudh way.

But if there's one thing Shilpa's missing it is the ability to play a bitchy role. She added, "People liked me more than the original bhabhi played by Dolly Sohi. It gets a bit tiring doing roles where you only make people cry and sympathize with you. Mythologicals are also not for me but I would like to do a period drama again. I had thoroughly enjoyed the experience of acting in Amrapali earlier."

And one thing she's sure of is not doing reality shows. She feels incapable of handling the harshness of it all.

New Drama: Waaris

This family drama is set against the background of the underworld

From Mon-Thurs at 11 pm IST on Zee TV

Waaris is the story of Rudra Pratap Singh who is an aging mafia don. Yashodhara is his wife and his sons are Shankar and Shaurya. The series traces the search for a true heir (waaris) to Rudra Pratap Singh.

Yashodha loves both her sons but she has a fear of losing Shaurya permanently lodged at the back of her mind. Gayatri, Shankar's wife, dreams of leading a comfortable family life with her husband and their child and lives with the hope that her dream will come true in the near future. Shankar's aim in life is to become his father's waaris.

READ about Ajnabee: Never Trust a Stranger on Zee Cinema

Tuesday: Gayatri is excited about the sonography that she will have to undergo. More so, because Shankar had promised to accompany her. Shaurya gets bashed up by some thugs and on hearing this Shankar vows revenge.

Wednesday: Shankar kills Bachhu Pandey. More characters are introduced at this point. Shaurya gets set to go on a picnic with Simran. Yashodha makes the arrangements for Rudra Pratap's sister Laxmi's shradh. The sad truth is Rudra Pratap had killed his own brother-in-law. Laxmi's daughter, Kanika, lives in the same house although she hates her Mama for having murdered her father.

Thursday: Simran dreams of the picnic that's been planned by Shaurya. Karan is shocked when he finds out that Bachhu Pandey is no more. He had planned to use Pandey to put an end to Shaurya. When Rudra Pratap and Shankar go over to meet rival Ganesh Shetty, Sunny Shetty insults Rudra Pratap. Shankar loses control immediately and gets ready to hit out at Sunny. Rudra Pratap gets quite upset with Shankar's impulsive behaviour and tells him off for this and also for killing Bachhu Pandey. He tells his wife Yashodha that maybe he should seriously consider Shaurya as his waaris and not the elder Shankar. Yashodha is quite shocked to hear this.

Calorie conscious Iqbal Khan

The price of being a hunk on screen? Refrain from the daily pleasures of life. Iqbal Khan who currently stars in Waaris maintains his diet to the hilt.

The actor has to curb his desire to binge on sweets owing to the fact that he cannot afford to put an ounce of extra flab on his well maintained physique. He is so conscious that he keeps a strict check on his calorie intake every day.

Recently on a trip to Delhi with Shilpa Shinde, for the launch of the show, on his way back to the airport, Mr. Khan jumped out of the car, not bothering about his fan following, very cool and collected, as he sprinted to one of the famous Halwai's of Delhi, Nathu Mithaiwala. Though his bliss was momentarily marred by the people who recognized him, he went ahead and bought few kilos' of Kalakand sweets. Surprised by this indulgence, we asked him if he was actually going to eat them. To which he replied, that the Kalakand was not the ordinary variety, but especially prepared sugar free ones. Shilpa's jaw fell down when she heard that…and asked Iqbal if he actually said sugar free kalakand barfees!!!

And that's not the end of the man's devil-may-care attitude. With very less time left to reach airport, a stranger waves saying, "hello bhaisahab aapka tyre puncher ho gaya hai". Cool Iqbal taking Shilpa along with him entered "In & Out" grocery outlet till the time driver replaced the tyre. Here you see Shilpa drinking cold ice tea to which Iqbal asked if that was diet ice tea? To which Shilpa didn't know how to react.
