Moving out of Ekta's shadow

You win some and then you lose some. The queen of television, producer Ekta Kapoor took the fledglings and gave them wings. And the fledglings took off! Here's a look at some actors Ekta mentored, protegees, if you will, and their defiant solo flights: Smriti Irani History: June 6, 2007 was a big date in the history of Indian television. The biggest bahu of them all, Smriti aka Tulsi quit Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, apparently following a fallout between her and Indian television's queen, Ekta Kapoor. Ekta was also co-producing a show with Smriti (Thodi Si Zameen, Thoda Sa Aasman) that she backed out from. The Rumour Mills:According to the grapevine, Smriti was stifled working the same character for six years and wanted a break. She was made to shoot on the day of her wedding and also soon after she suffered a miscarriage. Plus, her own show, Virrudh with the Aditya Birla Group (Applause Entertainment) was not doing too well. The Queen Speaks: Ekta gallantly defended her protegee and denied all allegations following reports of their relationship gone sour saying that the doors are always open for Smriti Irani and that she will be welcomed back with open arms. Ekta insists that Smriti has just taken a break.

Where are they now: Smriti has her own production, Virrudh where she plays the lead.
