Shivaji had a step-brother Venkoji who founded the Maratha empire in Thanjavur (present day Tamil Nadu). There are still substantial amount of Marathas in Thanjavur and adjoining areas.
Shivaji's elder brother Sambhaji was killed by the Bijapuri's (it seems Afzal Khan had a hand in that but there is no evidence) and its one of the reasons Shivaji went hard at the Bijapuri's and Afzal in particular.
Our histroy books in school are pretty blinkered and unfortunately Delhi centric. It's Maurya, then Gupta (both from Patna) then suddenly its Ghori and Prithviraj, then Delhi Sultanate and then Mughals. After Aurangzeb dies in 1707 it is suddenly 1857 Mangal Pandey/Rani Lakshmibai and then British
Not many know that by 1750 Marathas had complete control from Punjab to TN and from Gujarat to Bengal.. But I guess its a post for some other forum
