Changing Face Of Women In Society-"Rajini to Balika Vadhu"
The scheming women characters of Saas-Bahu soaps have quitely replaced the strong-willed and independent protagonists of "Shanti" and "Rajini" of mid-nineties and the TV producers attribute the change to "AUDIENCE DEMAND"
But does the 21st century women relate to the larger-than-life saintly creatures with Impossible Ideals or Conniving Vamps Shown on the Small Screen ???
During the time of DD,the focus of media was on Elevating the woman's Status in the society. In the90's focus was more on the Urban woman who wanted to step out of the house and work. With the start of the Millennium, came the glitz and Glamour of Cable TV allowing space for competition and Newer concepts.
Star India ,which started the whole era of soaps believes that Women are Not Interested in watching The 'rebels' like "Rajini" and "Shanti"
As TV reached the interiors of the country a new group of audience emerged giving way to Issue-Based Serials like "Balika Vadhu","Agle Janam....","Naa Aana.....","Uttaran" centering Women in the village Grappling with Issues from Female Foeticide To Child Marriage.
While the Issue-based serials have been Thought-provoking,some complain that they lose their Track after few episodes which is why the female characters are NOT INSPIRATIONAL anymore as woman always look upto strong characters ,who fight for a change and bring reform.
This was an Article in a Leading Daily at my place and as we see most of the shows here are from Colors whose EVP Asvin Yardi had told "Every woman is a Rajini or a Shanti and every one wants to work out" That didn't make much sense to me When all these shows are so Uninspirational why fight over these characters And truly told here that these Mock women and the society
