In this story, Tejo is stressing out about an interview for the position of a professor and Fateh is supporting her during a very crucial turning point in her life.
The soft ray of the morning sun fell on his face, causing him to grumble. His hands instinctively went to the space beside him, only to find it empty. Fateh quickly woke up, surprised not to find Tejo there. Where did his Missus go?
He sat up, a little panicky for Tejo usually doesn’t get up this early on her days off. Besides, she slept late last night, much to Fateh’s dismay. When the man protested at his wife’s decision to sleep late, she glared at him and said “go to sleep! I’ll be right there in a bit.”
Fateh looked around, and finally sighed in relief when he found his wife, seemingly scribbling her life away at the table. He slowly got up and walked to Tejo.
“May I ask you why you are up so early?” He asked, as he placed his chin on Tejo’s shoulder. Tejo jumped a little bit but then calmed down when she realized it was her husband. “I need to prepare! My interview is in an hour!” Tejo exclaimed.
Fateh kneeled beside his wife, and she turned to the side to face him. He took her hands in his and said, “you’ll be excellent.” She looked up at him, worry lines forming between her eyebrows.
“Hey now” he said and got up, before sitting on the table she was working at. “Come here” he softly said. She got up and stood in front of him. “I know you’ll get the job. You’re the best professor this university could ask for! The department will be lucky to have you” he said, and took her hands in his and kissed them.
“You really think so?” She asked, a spark of confidence slowly igniting in her eyes. “I know so” he said, emphasizing on the “know.”
“I am just worried about the impression I’ll make” she said and rested her on his shoulder, before removing it and looking into his eyes. “You’re a winner Tejo, and I know you’ll win this round too” he said, as he got down from the table and hugged his wife.
“You’ll make an excellent professor, and your students will adore you as well. I promise” he said. Tejo sighed as she tightly hugged her husband. Fateh slowly ran his fingers through her hair and said “everything will be alright my heart. You’ll see.” When the duo broke apart, Fateh asked, cupping his wife’s face in his hands, “let’s freshen up ok? Then we’ll have breakfast. Alright?” Tejo nodded in approval.
At the breakfast table, they chatted with the other family members. Tejo’s nervousness sometimes creeped in, and Fateh would hold her hand underneath the table, and softly squeeze it. He knew this job meant a lot to Tejo.
While Tejo is usually very level-headed, there comes a time when even the calmest person will feel anxious, and Tejo was no different. After breakfast was done, Tejo started to get ready for the interview. Fateh gazed at his wife, while she applied the final touches of her makeup, before proceeding to grab her bag.
“Let’s go” Fateh said and gestured towards the door. The duo hopped into Fateh’s jeep and left. When they arrived at the university, Fateh parked his vehicle and turned towards his wife. “Remember, you got this. Ok?” He said and got up from his seat to kiss wife on the forehead.
“Thank you” she said. “You got this, alright? Now, walk through that door and show what a boss lady you are” he said and smiled. “Ok” she said and took a deep breath. “I’ll win this round too” she said. “Yes. You will” he replied. He gazed at his wife, as she got down from his jeep and proceeded to walk through the gates. A proud smile made it across his lips. She’ll get the job. He knows it.
Sometime later, Tejo came out of the building looking less nervous than she was before. He quickly jumped out of his jeep and ran to his wife. “How did it go?” He asked. “I think it went well” she said, a hopeful smile on drawing on her face. Fateh smiled at his wife and said “I told you it will go well.”
Tejo nodded her head in agreement. “I think I can finally sleep in peace tonight” she said. The past two weeks had been super hectic for her. From assigning final grades, resigning from her previous college to this interview – it’s a lot.
Long story short, she was exhausted and pretty much passed out as soon her head hit the pillow that night. He smiled at the sleeping form of his wife, before drawing the blanket over both. “Sleep well my love” Fateh said and kissed his wife on the head, as he lied down next to her.
He was happy to see her finally being able to relax. The Friday of the following week was supposed be the day when Tejo learns about the status of her application. Knowing her, she’ll probably be a little nervous as the date nears but he knows all will be well.
Friday arrived sooner than expected. Tejo was nervous but excited at the same time. Part of her was confident she got the job, the other part of her was worried.
Fateh entered their bedroom with two cups of chai in his hands. The look on her face said everything he needed to know. So, he kept the two cups on the table before holding her hands, motioning her to sit on the bed.
“Deep breaths” he said. Tejo took a deep breath. “I got this, everything will be well” she said. Fateh smiled and nodded. “Now” he started, before handing over one cup of chai to her. “Have some chai. You’ll feel better” he added. She took the cup from his hands, and rested her head on his shoulders. He instinctively placed his own on hers. “This job means so much to me you know? This university has been a place I’ve wanted to work at for the longest time” she said.
“I know my love. I'm confident they will hire you” he said. They broke apart, and Tejo slowly walked towards the window, and her husband followed suit. “Do you remember when you made chai for me for the first time? We had it near a window” she said, looking up at her husband. “Yes I remember. Funny thing is how I was grumbling about not being able to make chai before you came in” he said and chuckled. “I am your good luck charm?” She asked. Fateh smiled at her, his eyes shining with all the love he had for her in his heart. “That, you are” he said. The duo chatted about everything and anything in between while sipping their chai.
Suddenly Tejo’s phone rang and they both went near the bedside table. She picked up her phone and exclaimed, “it’s them! It’s the department” and placed her now empty cup on the table. Fateh placed his own empty cup on the table and motioned for her to answer it.
“Hello?” she answered and looked up at her husband. “Really? Thank you so much!” she said. The smile on his wife’s face said it all. “I start next month” she said. “Thank you so much sir! I really appreciate it!” she exclaimed. When the call ended, Fateh eagerly asked “so?”
“I got the job!” She exclaimed. “I knew it!” he exclaimed. “I told you!” he added enthusiastically. “Thank you!” Tejo said as she excitedly hugged her husband, almost toppling him over. “This trial was made easier because of you” she said. Fateh chuckled as he hugged his wife tightly and said, “I am very proud of you.”
She looked up at him, her eyes bright because she was happy. “Really?” She asked. “Yes, my heart. You’re an amazing woman and no doubt an excellent teacher as well” he said. “I am lucky to have you as my wife and my best friend” he added. “You’re an amazing husband” she replied, before adding “and I am lucky to have you as my best friend.”
“I love you” he said, as he gazed into her eyes and his wife replied to him, as she has many times and will for many more “I love you too.”
