Tumhari Disha has made her a household name and also given her fame, better known as Chhavi, she never thought in her wildest of dreams that she would ever become an actor.
She started out as a singer who had been performing ' on stage since she was 7 years old and has done her Masters in Indian Classical Music. She got her initial inspiration from her mother.
She earlier started singing on Doordarshan and her producers told her that she has a photogenic face and during the same time she started with her modelling. But she never thought that one day she would become a hit in television.
While she was modelling she went on to anchoring, a show for Sahara called Bollywood Aur Kya.While anchoring she got a lot of acting offers. Because of a lack of training in acting, she refused all the offers from Balaji and Shobhana Desai Productions as she thought she would not be fit for this thing.
Initially she thought to herself that she might start as an anchor or a singer. But after giving auditions at various places she thought of giving television a chance. As luck would have it she gave the audition for Tumhari Disha and got selected. Initially it was difficult to move between Delhi and Mumbai so she shifted to Mumbai.
When Maz Makhani told Chhavi Mittal that she was beautiful, it meant more than a compliment to her. For Maz, having freeze-framed the likes of Mariah Carey's Dream Lover sequence and Destiny's Child is not only a lensman of great repute, but also the person who captured Chhavi's 'Indian' self for Bon Jovi's latest (yet untitled) album
''I was very excited when I got to know that I was part of Bon Jovi's album. They were looking for an Indian face and approved of my pictures, which were sent to the Indian producers of the album through a modelling agency,'' recalls Chhavi. Of course, when the American crew landed in Agra, where the album was shot, Chhavi's dreams moved one step closer to coming true.
''The album features TV sets falling all over the place with Bon Jovi, on the screen, seen in three countries: India, Japan and Egypt. I am the model for the Indian sequence with the song I appear in being titled Everyday,'' informs Chhavi. In the album, Chhavi sports an exquisite red lehenga and does everything from walking along the marketplaces of Agra to taking a seat opposite the Taj Mahal. ''All in all, the shooting experience was a whole lot of fun. The producers were professional to the core and made me feel comfortable,'' says Chhavi. Her only regret is that she hasn't been able to meet Bon Jovi in person. ''I have always admired him and just love the way he sings,'' she gushes, ''Unfortunately, despite my appearing in his album, I didn't get to meet him. But then, maybe I will get to meet him some day.''
She feels it was a learning experience for her to work with the senior actors like Kanwaljeet and ZarinaWahab. Her relationship with Kanwaljeet was like the one she shares with her father. She says, "He is a very natural actor. Sometimes I cannot make out if he's saying his lines or talking to me as Chhavi. He gets totally into the scene and underlines his dialogue. I would like to be this involved". She likes the transformation in Zarinaji, whereas in one moment she is smiling and the next moment she's so venomous, and after seeing her expressions, Chaavi was so inspired that she too would start crying and get emotionally involved in the scene.
According to her there is a lot of difference between Disha and Chhavi, as Disha is too nice a person. As personally she has her own idiosyncrasies and her mood swings and she is not always so nice to her mom and dad. She is a rebel by nature and does whatever she likes.
Chhavi and her director husband Mohit Hussein (one of the directors of Rooh), met on the sets of Yes or No, fell in love, and then got married on April 29th in Delhi, She is very happy being his wife. When asked about the other projects that she is working on, she says, "With a shooting schedule of 28 days a month, Disha takes up most of my time, I want to keep what is left of it for my personal life", as she wants to spend her remaining time with her husband. But if she gets a good offer in movies she is ready to do it.
