"What do you mean there is nothing you can do" Uma shouted, grabbing the doctors collar
"Im sorry Mr Toshniwal, but your mother isnt going to make it, theres nothing we can do at this late stage"
Uma let go of the doctor and collapsed into his chair
"How did no one know, she seemed so fine, how could she hide it for so long"? Uma asked miserably
"Sometimes cancer patients dont want their family and friends to find out, sadly it was found to late, im so sorry" Doctor Agarwal rested her hand on his shoulder
"Can I see her"
She nodded "Say your goodbyes this time"
Uma stood up shakily and walked to his mother's hospital room
"Ma" Uma called as he walked over to his mother, she smiled softly and held his hand
"I have something very important to ask you"
Uma nodded, his head throbbing from all the crying
"I want you to go and get your wife, its been eight years, how long will you leave her in that village"
"Ma, please, now isnt the time"
"Then when will it be, when will you treat her as your wife, its what I want"
Uma looked away and she squeezed his hand
"For me Uma, please"
Uma closed his eyes as if in pain then nodded
As quickly as his mother had said her wish, the heart monitor dropped and then beeped loudly
"Ma" Uma cried, falling to his knees
Doctor Agarwal watched from the window, she put her hand on a nurse's wrist and shook her head "Let him mourn"
----------
It was early the next day and Uma had made all arrangements for his wife to join him in Delhi. In truth he wasnt sure what she looked like anymore, it was a quick marriage, one to make his mother happy when he was 20 years old and she was 18, he never wanted to return to that village because of the memories of his father so got one of his employees to brig her to him
As soon as he saw her, he would tell her that this marriage would be kept up socially and financially but other than that, there would be nothing more.
Uma looked up at the short woman who stood in the corner, she looked up slowly, her brown orbs hypnotising him, making him step closer. She smiled up at him and then walked till she was infront of him.
Eight years she had lived alone without her husband and now he wanted her back, for what reason she didnt know, but she knew her years of praying and believing had led her to this point
She looked down at his outstretched hand, her stomach was in knots, this was her husband and he was welcoming her by shaking her hand
She was about to say something then stopped, she had to take this step by step, stretching out her hand she took his and shook it, they both pulled back quickly afterwards and he grabbed her wrist
Walking forward he dragged her behind him out of the airport
A woman barged into her shoulder "Cant you watch where you're going"
Uma huffed angrily and pulled her along faster "This is Delhi, not your little village, we cant dawdle here"
She couldnt help the tears that filled her eyes, she looked away until they arrived at the car
As Uma sat next to her in the car, he registered the sad look in her eyes and looked away. It wasnt his problem if she had come to Delhi with hopes of a normal marriage, Uma wasnt capable of loving anything other than his mother and his work, she was but an inconvenience in his life, but he wouldnt break the promise to his mother.
"Cant you put your belt on properly" he bellowed, making her jump
Her hands shook as she tried to put the belt on and he leaned over and did it for her
She took a deep breath in at his close proximity and looked out of the window
After putting her seat belt in he started the car and drove away
She couldnt help but glance over at him every now and then, she understood this marriage wasnt convenient for him, but she also had to give up a lot for his sake, maybe he would never understand that, maybe he already knew and didnt care.
But no matter what she would respect the relationship they shared, even if it wasnt ideal
Uma got out of the car quickly as they arrived and walked to the door
She followed him, looking down she didnt see him infront of her and bumped into his back
"This is Delhi, not your little village, watch where you are going"
Ignoring his comment she waited for him to open the door and then walked inside
The house was beautiful, but bland. It had the potential to be a home, but she didnt feel like it was her place to say anything
"Come on, I will show you to your room"
"My room" she squeaked "Wont we be in the same room"
Uma stepped closer, towering over her, "This isnt a normal marriage, as already explained to you, I will pay for whatever you need and when needed infront of family I will be the doting husband, but as for now, you and me share no relationship, do not try and take advantage of my mothers last wish"
"Last wish" she repeated, confused
"Yes, she is dead" Uma said, looking away to hide how he felt
"Dead" she muttered, faltering back into the table
"No one told me she was dead"
Uma looked over at her, she reflected the pain he had felt
He knew his mother had a soft spot for her and regretted telling her so brashly
His mother had touched many lives and clearly she was heartbroken to
He went to rest his hand on her shoulder, to offer some comfort but then clenched his hand and cleared his throat
"Thats why youre here, she wanted me to bring you here" he said, his voice lower
"I didnt even get to say goodbye" she sobbed
Uma gulped, his throat felt as if it was closed
He never did know what to do when someone was sad
"Look it will be okay" he tried to sound sympathetic and it must have worked because she threw herself into his arms and sobbed
He stood, his arms straight, not knowing what to do as she cried into his chest
Pushing her back by her shoulders slightly he looked away
"Come ill show you to your room"
She followed him up the stairs and he opened a door
She glanced at her bags on the floor
"Ill let you get some rest"
She nodded and stepped into her room, about to close the door when he put his hand in the way
"What was your name again" he asked
She froze, his was the name she muttered every night before she slept, always praying for him, crying for him, yet it was clear in these eight years, he was never thinking about her
"Kanak" she said, before trying to close the door again
Uma nodded, "Kanak" he said, testing out her name
He stood back allowing her to shut the door and then walked downstairs
Kanak sat on her bed sadly and began to unpack
