In whole his life, he strongly feels towards only two things Dharam and Kanak.
That's why Massisa is so worried.
He is as blind to Kanak as to Dharam.
Kanak unkonwingly achieved which Massisa never thought no one can achieve.
That is making equal status with Dharam in his views. It is indeed a hard work for Kanak to change him as Uma resists her attempts because he knows she is the only one who can knoock it down the other.
He can't deny those feelings even if he want to.
He can't respect the friendship relationship with such strong feelings.
