TSMSPJ*ep.60*10.6.17:My Impression* "every breath you take[Sting]..
My title for today's episode is a 70's classic performed by the rock band Police.. the words "every breath you take.. every move you make.. I'll be watching you.. hit me when I watched today's episode. The episode, for me lends itself to the play on the word breath, itself!
Gobbling down food is like a breath of fresh air for Kanak! dare I say, along with the fun side of dabbling with the wily art of breaking rules of eating surreptitiously when expected to fast! Only every little sin and wrongdoing comes with the fear of literally running for cover if caught in the act! When the tall sombre figure of Uma turns up looking for his wife in the vicinity of the temple, where she said she'd meet him after attending the aarti! The scene where Kanak runs in panic! Breathless sprints like a gazelle! leaps! ducks! collides into what comes in her way! reflects her desperation to be in the right before the mighty Uma!
His progressing glide towards the temple nearly takes her breath away! But thanks to her fast paced legs she gets to the finishing line just in time ! for Uma's arrival. With bated breath she waits innocently, to gather if he noticed she had been up to no good! She nearly draws her last breath when Uma in passing comments he missed her at the temple.. Kanak is far from a malicious liar. She prefers to off load her moral burden while she has the chance, in a roundabout jalebi style.. telling the truth but duped with sarcasm! Well didn't he know she was stuffing her face with food?? Of course she wouldn't do that! Why he didn't see her? is because she queued with the women! She performed obeisance plus partook in the offertory as well! Uma smiles silently and points out.. how come he wasn't offered the same offertory as hers? green tell tale chutney at the corner of her mouth! Well Kanak's humour riddled fib! might have just been a waste of her breath! as the street vendor turns up with a complimentary plate for her! for bringing his trade luck! as his auspicious first customer! Well humour or not! Kanak acts up as the little child stealing sweeties! Defiance before Uma will save her face before him! She is Gita who speaks the truth! So be it! yes she ate! Why shouldn't she? she was famished! Nearly would have breathed her last! If she hadn't eaten! In fact Kanak doesn't even leave him time to catch his breath and launches an attack on Uma and his family for their robotic rules! Uma smiles, reckons It's his moment to cover up for Kanak before his family..win her trust! For he is omniscient and is aware what will befall Kanak when she gets home? But he tells her not! Craftily he omits the inquisition Kanak will receive at home! However he paints himself as her well wisher by offering her mint as a breath freshener! Kanak misjudges his good deed and brashly turns it down! Uma shrugs ,be my guest then pretty woman! Was only trying to help!! Kanak as usual heaves, she will bend rules to suit her needs whenever she gets the chance! Kanak notices while she over indulges in more than her stomach can take.. Uma's button too, gets fixed! his collar is modestly buttoned up too! amusing.. so it appears that Uma's frivolous fancies are fastened for the minute as he appears in total control of the situation..one wilful wife to be chaperoned home!
At home in one breath Maasi rattles off the importance of enforcing rules upon every one ,without bending them to maintain consistency in the house! Palomi cooks in the kitchen. Yet she is tempted to break some rules by squealing upon Kanak's conversation with Uma ..but she stops short in her breath as Maasi is likely to put her in her menial place. Palomi reckons by maintaining Uma's confidentiality about his private talk with Kanak , she will gain Uma's trust!
The lavish spread at the dining table awaits Kanak at home. Probably makes her mutter under her breath, if someone mentions food she will puke. This then is her reprimand for breaking the rules! she'll probably have to nibble at some food. Sheer nervousness makes her want to start ,to cover her sin! Kanak breathes a sigh of relief! when Saras delays the eating by feeding the sacred cow first! Being delayed at eating.. safe! Kanak heaves a small sigh of respite. But it's her foul onion breath that lands her into deep waters!
According to the house rules, eating onions and garlic is regarded as non-deity ,as their strong fragrance rectifies the flavour of the other spices. Due to these properties onion and garlic are discarded as impure in the scriptures [* reference] also elsewhere it also mentions that as Brahims lead rituals, they need to keep their souls pure ,hence they abstain from eating onion and garlic.
The complete scene is about strict adherence to set rules. The setting has an austere aura around it. Kanak with bated breath is a witness to the scene where she is put under pressure to speak the truth. Oil drips as a sand timer, where the sinner is given a choice, calculated by each drop symbolic of seconds, to confess her sin of consuming onions. Kanak stands next to a quietly amused Uma, who gives her a sided whisper about Maasi s heightened four senses! As such, none can slip through the net where she is concerned!
Uma chuckles as he mutters under his breath.. told her to munch mint, but as usual she was on her high horse ! Kanak recalls and with every breath she takes, how she regrets misinterpreting him , by turning down his offer to tone down her onion breath with mint!
Well, Kanak takes her chance and refuses to speak up! Uma is right, Maasi is a hard task mistress as far as letting even light sinners get away! Poor Kanak holds her breath.. she'll deal with what comes! But what comes is breathalysing all for onions!!
The episode is yet another peek into the workings of Uma's household. One can say in all honesty that there's not a dull moment for Kanak! be it as Sita or Gita. As in a way, both Uma and her are getting the best of Kanak's two roles. Many situations they get embroiled into, takes their breath away! Kanak is one character who is under surveillance.. Palomi watches every step she takes. Maasi , though despite her dictatorial role, seems to be soft on Kanak. Perhaps she is wise enough to gauge that the key to Uma's heart is this girl Kanak.. the first girl to date to leave him short of breath! Mind you it seems that soon Kanak's crime will be made public ! she is the only odd one out! she dreads being named and shamed! Worse still Uma Shankar who sets the rules will mete out her punishment! Will Kanak influence his judgement as Sita or Gita? With bated breath we wait...
