TSMSPJ*ep: 41*19.5.17: My Impressions *Mixed Messages
Giving or receiving mixed messages is usually based on leaving a sense of ambiguity or contradiction in issues between concerned parties. A mixed message sends off a puzzling difference between the way someone says and what someone thinks. Mixed message psychology is a form of approach, of avoidance & conflict. Looking at the episode for example the manner in which Kanak projects both a desire, to get hold of Bhabo's papers and the lack of enthusiasm for the task as she sees it, of playing Uma Shankars wife. It's interesting to see the mixed messages she gives me as the viewer. The dissension she holds for the orthodox , outdated, rigid and intolerant ideas of Uma Shankar within her mind, appear contrary in how she behaves with him. The body messages she gives, in my opinion is to give him a false sense of complacency to him. So as to dupe him without causing the least bit of suspicion upon herself from his side. At times I am beginning to wonder,if Uma too is giving her a mixed message?
For it is a sultry complacency she senses around Uma as they both leave the temple after the lamp and wick purification ritual. Kanak appears to go with the flow but within her mind she is miles away from this beast with her brothers Ved and Vansh in her room. Her two brothers are burdened by mixed messages they give. On the face of it the shop ticks away, where as in reality, its sale is underway. They potter about in Kanak's room .. imagine her to be the harbinger of good news! she their baby sister has got the papers of the shop. how did she do it? They will wonder! and she would reply it was Bhabo's love that chivvied her on. Then the blissful moment, unapproachable Bhabo appears ,is well pleased with Kanak's feat of restoring the sweet shop back to her! in turn Bhabo offers Kanak the maternal lap she aspired all her life.. Kanak's dream leaves her reinforced with fighting spirit!
Uma may at times, get the message, that Kanak adapts or accepts his unreasonable turns. But it's high time she shows him otherwise! So after she leaves the temple , with a view to reach the car. Kanak deliberately damages both her sandals and runs back up the stairs into the temple! And firstly demands a new pair of sandals since hers just broke .As there is no way she will walk on the burning soil and scorch her soles! The scene puts Kanak in a position to order him! Meet her needs practically! Prove claimed husband devotion points to her. The message she gives him is loud and clear angst !Uma comments about her erratic outbursts which she needs to control! Her reaction is to create as much trouble for him as possible. But her refusal to walk barefoot has the opposite effect on him as she intended. He offers the top of this feet for her soles to rest upon! As her husband he is duty bound to take care of her every need as she is his better half, he will not let her feet singed by the heat baked soil. Closely and in a bit more nearness than desired . Yet Uma's feet drag, walks, carries the body mass of two! All to prove to her yet gain they are destined to be the lamp and the wick. Did Kanak really want such close proximity with Uma it is far from her emotional need? As Kanak s need is to retrieve the papers of the shop.. Only. What she really feels for Ravan Uma is on the contrary to the stepping on his toes and letting him lead her feet that carry her whole body ! Is this act of devoted caring husband of Uma another method of exerting more sugar coated control over her?
Mixed messages waft about in Rathi house too, where Meenakshi was keen to get Golu married into khandelwala family.. when the man's phones to get the proposal fixed due to auspicious hour .. but Meenakshi beats around the bush as she wants the shops sale first.. and the papers are missing! So she buys some time.
The day over and done with Kanak rolls like the wheel.. Follows and turns according to the rules and traditions of this household .But at night in turn, to share the same bed space with this demon , makes her home sick. But nothing passes by the demon's keen eye. Uma approaches her with a small mortar and pestle with a paste in it. He tenderly briefs her about the final ritual she has to experience to achieve the trophy of the lamp and the wick! The experience will be drizzled with the sweet pain of love. So gently the demon smoothes the cool numbing pre-med paste in preparation for a needed procedure on Kanak's soft inner arm! There. ..he groans slowly she won't feel a thing.. And it'll be over! Kanak shrugs her arm in anger and in good humour he warns her, best not to throw a strop , as the whistle will blow!!It does and Maasi like the strict matron shouts at the children in their dormitory... Hush! Go to sleep!!You two!
Night rolls like a cosmic wheel into a new day. Kanak has a pensive walk in the classically ethic wooden veranda. Gently swaying palm trees form a private alcove.. in its shadows, unknown to Kanak lurks around Gabbasa as a silent visual radar. Kanak is plagued by hiccups and memories of her family. Nostalgia descends upon her as one by one she names them ,in the hope that her hiccups will stop! They do at the thought of Bhabo.. and Kanak notices the large water wheel! She stares at the way it rotates by the direct action of the water! tears well up in her eyes.. she feels alone.. like the water wheel, her life turns around by the force of her goal ! to get back her Bhabo's papers! She catches sight of Uma doing Surya worship.. her sad eyes turn to the waterwheel, this man seems to be the directing or controlling force in the Rathi's life ..he controls bhabo's papers.. she muses, as she looks at the revolving water wheel Uma Shankar is the big wheel that has a bearing on her life, yet she would rather be with her family. But the name Bhabo ! with its recurring course like the water wheel reminds her why she goes through the churning here? till for one more in day, she implores herself, to hang on as, then she will return to her Bhabo forever!
From the temple ,now to this place with the family rallying around her.Kanak wonders what this final ritual is all about? Massi finds it hard to contain her excitement .Suman too finds another chance to belittle her sister inl aw debates, if Kanak can actually cope with what is about to come! As only a girl who shows commitment can bear the prodedure? Massi explains the be all and end all of this ritual which will forever speak for Kanak s unfading strong connection with Uma. By now Kanak's receives feelers about some thriller ritual.. Well she will have to see to it what the hype is all about?
Well the end and pre-cap , is something to talk about at length in tomorrows impression. For me personally the water wheel scene was very moving especially when Kanak deals with ways to stop her hiccups. Hamlet53 20.5.17
