India safe for Tourists or Women?

Lately there seem to be a lot of news stories of the rape of foreign women traveling alone in India. Such incidents have been reported in Goa, Rajasthan, Banaras all of which are popular tourist spots. Is this just an anomaly or has India now become totally unsafe for tourism specially for women traveling alone. Heck for that matter even women travelling with their male companions have not been spared.

Besides foreign tourists even the local Indian women are registering more complaints of sexual harassment and eve teasing. While these are serious issues, some of the political parties are justifying these acts as "the women inviting this on themselves with their skimpy and suggestive clothing, as well as their alcohol consumption." I have read some of these bizarre statements in total shock, and now I am even ashamed to be an part of those India men.

Should the government take some adequate action against such misguided politicians or should they continue to look the other way because of who these politicians are? If the government continues to act as impotent bystanders sooner or later the tourism to India is going to melt down, and the local Indian women are going to live under a self imposed house arrest. This begs the question can India afford a loss of tourism or women in the workplace, in the growing economy, simply because the government cannot or will not guarantee them any safety outside their homes?

when our women itself are not spared ..then how will the foreign women be?I dont think the number of such cases have increased..but its just that now we are coming to know..or rather are being made aware of them since finally Women in india have found courage and gone and lodged complaints against the uncivilized men.
If men can consume alcohol then so can women..and clothing..Like every women in india is roaming around in clothes that hardly covers her body...The fact is that whatever women wear..saree....salwa..chudidar..skirt or anything small....nothing changes ...as tho men only go behind girls wearing skimpy clothes..!other women also face the same probs as they do..
Safety if nothing is done soon..and with the buzzing technology..breaking into houses would be like a cake walk for everyone and the only "safest" place a for a girl would also become unsafe.

This is really an issue of concern. Rapists should be punished severly.

I wonder if the politicians, who put the blame on women for "inviting trouble due to their choice of clothes," will ever stop clinging to this convenient excuse and start taking some concrete and adequate measures to rectify the problem instead. I wish Sonia Gandhi, who is supposedly in a position to influence, would give priority to this issue. In fact, I wish that the retired Kiran Bedi now turns her focus on the victims of such crimes as well. Nave as it may sound maybe educating the public may lead to a better understanding and eventually reduce such occurrences.

The courts are helpless and really cannot do justice in these types of cases if the politicians don't arm it with the enactment of substantive laws that can take a big bite out of these kinds of a crimes. Most of all the politicians need to stop making excuses for the criminals and further humiliating and victimizing the victims. If this continues then maybe the Legal Aid Society, if there is such an organizations in India, should file lawsuits against the politicians for aiding and abetting the perpetrators as well.

The incidents of crimes against women are on a rise, it is primarily due to the reason that many more women are coming forward to report these days. That is the advantage of a open society. THIS is better than the past times, Once a problem is known atleast it can be resolved

Is it safe, depends on which area you live in. Remember India is a country of high population and the ratio of policeman to citizen is very low.

In such times citizens have a duty to realize police are not going to be available for each and every incident and have be more responsible to themselves.

Yes everyone is allowed to wear whatever they want to wear(heck the father of the nation is pictured half nude) but you are responsible for your safety first. If you wear provocative clothes and stand outside a beer bar(anywhere in the world) you are going to recieve cat calls and it is absolute stupidity to blame someone else for that event.

If YOU can take care of yourself you will mostly be safe, if you use proper judgement in moving around in the country you will be mostly be safe.

India is very conservative country(not to the action of the middle eastern countries, but it is considerably conservative). So the acceptability norms are much lower, things are opening up, but it will take time, a few more decades for the citizens to accept the defination of modern clothing, the equality of behaviour, till that time you are going to get these kind of reactions from the politicians, after all the politicians belong to the older generation and generally come from rural areas where this type of clothing and the open behaviour is not seen.

Not making an excuse, just saying it is going to take time and you cannot make a conclusion from a few incidents.(e.g Three Indians have been shot dead in the last few weeks in America, does that mean Indians are not safe in America?)

Yes, these incidents are worrying and offenders should be dealt with sternly. But it would be wrong to extrapolate that India is unsafe for tourists or women.
