Aesthetically done , the movie will only appeal to a certain section of people. However the normal public may call it slow, boring crap depressing etc. There are many questions unanswered in the movie and therein lies its beauty. The critics havent taken very kindly to the film cos they have overlooked the film's brilliance. When slb said that the movie's lighting has every shade possible of blue,he was so right. It looks so surreal and the entire atmosphere of the movie the snow, the bluish green hues resembles several hollywood movies.Sonam is certainly more beautiful than Deepika and more talented. Ranbir Kapoor has very sad eyes but his acting is nice.He is a very lovable actor.
The chemistry is some scenes between the lead actors is teriffic.Theres a lot of importance given to granny characters as SLB in the credits has dedicated his movie to his grandma. And Rani MUkherjee has actually a lot of scenes with Ranbir .She looks very lively and beautiful. We all wanna get away to a fairy tale kind of looks wala world and this movie has that world in its ambience. The Quaint little town with Sonam being a girl who weaves carpets. The singer Ranbir who performs in a not so commercial looking hotel. The movie has so much of old world charm.
The penultimate scene where she has actually accepted Ranbir's love and given up waiting for her former lover has been conceived so well . And the moment Salman comes, she kind of deserts Ranbir midway and though he is not a saint,he does accept it as his fate though only after initial relenting .And the movie gives out so much positivity though the premise screams sorrow and heartbreak. The beautiful dialogue at the end is something like this- "jiska pyar uske paas hota hai ,uspar khuda meeherbaan hota hai, Aur jisko uska pyar nahi milta hai, uske saath khuda ek jaan ho jaata hai'.
The Sawariya title song towards the last reels
also has Ranbir exclaiming that -'she doesent love me so does that stop me from loving her'.And thats positivity to the hilt. Sonam is shown as being in a dilemma of feelings for her new innocent golden hearted fun friend Ranbir and her almost dissapeared lover who has made her wait for a year .And to add to the audience's misery Salman actually resurfaces after a year and that too when she has lost all hope.
Lastly the choreography of the song "Yun shabnami' deserves special mention for its uniqueness and lovely music too.Sonam dances very gracefully though she is not as petite. And Ranbir's dancing moves are so cute in this song.Sonam and Ranbir make a great match in this movie they complement each other beautifully

I must say I went to watch this film with a lot of expectations due to three reasons, one is that it's a SLB film and the second is that I loved the book (from which the original story is taken) and the final reason is that I loved the promos. first let me say there were way too many songs in this film where they weren't required and at times the film dragged a bit too much but that's about the only bad thing I can think of in this movie, everything else was beautiful and very aptly adopted into a film, it's not an easy task to take a short story and make it into a Hindi film, and I guess people who do enjoy excitement and melodrama shouldn't watch this film cos even at the climax the story is very tame in the normal sense of Hindi films but in my mind it was the best kind of romance and even in the subtleness there was excitement. The actors were fresh and young and had the same spirit I loved in the characters of the book, the same free spiritedness and the same madness, it was a treat to watch this movie but I don't recommended it to everyone. If you enjoyed Black then give this movie a watch at the theatre for sure, you can't enjoy this movie on DVD or on the net.

i couldt have have expressed my view any better ..i agree with u completly ..'old world charm; is the best word to describe Saawariya

To me Saawariya is like a brilliant work of art. a painting , that not everyone will appreciate .. most ppl will look at it and agree he picture looks beautiful .. but wont see anything beyond, thats why it could come across as boring...
But to the people with an eye for art Saawariya will come across as a masterpeice. so simple and beautiful on it face and full of symbols and hidden depths and questions that the viewer must answer.

i really loved the movie .. its warm n endearing.. if u want to really appreciate it go n see it in an arty mindset...

OSO was a great film but from a completely different genre .. its not fair to compare these two movies.. and its not a good idea to see it both on the same day.

before I write my opinion I would like to say that this story and the way SLB has made it would have worked much much better had it been a theatrical play...

SLB used this technique somewhat in Khamoshi and the film bombed...dunno abt this one! 😊

But having said that let me move to the positives...
SLB has created beautiful and aesthetic poetry in each frame of the film...the Raj Kapoor influence is seen in lots of places...he has made Ranbir act like granpa too...you are reminded so much of raj Kapoor going "yes Mrs. Disa..." in his Anari when u watch Ranbir and his landlady Zohra Sehgal..
the dialogues are crisp and humour subtle and sweet!
Ranbir has been given a lot of nuances to play in his debut role and he has done very well...his flair for comedy, his ability to romance, to play a sad lover who doesnt want to give up...all has showcased his talent immensly
he has his dad's voice and Mom's smile...he is a bound to go places
Sonam too shows sparks of great talent...and she looks beautiful too...
Rani and Salman do full justice to their role too...the screenplay is good
What fails the film is the fact that the story is too short and predictable and streching it to a full 2 hours fails to hold viewer attention... and the same set, which looks beautiful in the beginning starts appearing monotonous towards the end!

But what touched my heart the most was the fact that SLB has been able to capture the essence of young , innocent love very nicley and it does bring a tear to the eye...the purity of it all! The laughter of the 2 protagnists is bound to ring in your ears long after the movie is over and the images of them running playfully through the streets at night is gonna haunt you ...but only if you are a true blue romantic at heart!! 😊

Ranbir Kapoor is the undoubted star of the movie, he just takes away all your attention from the other stars. He is extremely talented, and makes you laugh and cry with him. Sonam Kapoor is not breathtakingly beautiful, but she does well as Sakina. Salman looks veryy old in his 10 minute role, and Rani is very good. Sonam and Ranbir look very cute together, but in front of Ranbir, Sonam looks pretty average. Ranbir just takes your breath away, he looks sooo totally innocent, cute nd adorable!! Confession time!! ok, I cried at the end, becoz Ranbir does that to you....you just can't bear the thought of Raj being sad or of someone breaking his heart....yet as Ranbir said, there was a tear in my eye and a smile on my face after I saw the movie....I noticed a thing, which hadn't really come out through Bir's interviews and pictures, that his eyes are very very expressive. His eyes show pain, hope, laughter, love and every emotion that he feels. In the Pari song, you can actually see the pain and hope in Ranbir's eyes. The way he makes you laugh when he laughs, and cry when he cries is amazing, its as if you are seeing everything through his eyes, and feeling the emotions that he feels...honestly,if anyone still doubts Ranbir's acting skills, I think they cannot understand acting, becoz I haven't seen finer acting than Ranbir's in Saawariya....Overall, I'd give the movie a 4 out of 5......Watch the movie for Ranbir, the superb sets, and of course, the Jab se tere naina song 😃

All I could interpret was that maybe the feeling of being in love was so bloody over- the-frickin-whelming, it sends you over the edge and make you act mental. And then I prayed to the good Lord above to never make me fall in love, if this is what happens to you in it. šŸ˜•

well I will see the movie and pass my judgement on it..But can u plz tell us if the ending of the movoe is Like Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam...If so, there goes the beauty of White Nights down the drain!

No the ending is not like in HDDCS but it has a certain SLB stamp to it, still i think it has kepts the beauty of white nights, specially the final lines by the lonley lover, the feeling of it has been kept in the end of the movie, but don't expect the very same feeling, after all it's SLB interpretation of the story.

^^^Thats a relief!!! The crux of white Nights is the lonely young man sacrificing his SORROW(N not all its always chanted "Sacrificing Love and Happiness) But scrificing "his sorrow" for her Happiness...sacrificing the ecstasy of being a dreamer to dwell forever on the moments of Bliss he had on those four Whte Nights!
IF SLB has brought THAT point across, then there is no complaining abt the movie when I see it! 😳
