Did Abhijeet Sawant win on looks alone?

A mockery of a talent show

Indian Idol, an Indian television singing realty show formatted on the popular Pop Idol series, has been in the news for all the wrong reasons.

Ever since derogatory remarks were made against the latest Indian Idol, Prashant Tamang, a singer of Nepalese origin, in a local radio channel, all hell has broken loose in Siliguri district in Darjeeling.

There have been violent clashes between Tamang fans and supporters of Amit Paul, the show's runner up. But more important than these clashes is a fundamental question as to whether the voting and selection process of such a talent show is fair enough to discover the best singing talent in the country.

Expectations

Ever since the show began three years ago, with a lot of hype and hoopla about unearthing India's best undiscovered young singing talent, none of the Idol winners have actually lived up to the expectations.

Indian Idol 2005 winner Abhijeet Sawant defeated runner-up Amit Sana but Sawant's win cannot be attributed to his singing talent alone. His boyish charm and pleasing personality had youngsters rooting for him all over India.

Technically speaking, the looks and personality should have nothing to do with it, but unfortunately it's these attributes which appeal to viewers.

This helped Sawant immensely with his first album, which was a runaway success, but since then not much was heard of him - except for some serials mainly produced by Sony TV, who are coincidentally the creators of Indian Idol. He did make a comeback with his latest album, Junoon, but it did not create the expected hysteria, which only goes on to expose his limited singing skills.

Loopholes

Indian Idol 2006 clearly revealed the loopholes in the voting and selection process. During the initial rounds, a genuine singing talent, Amey Date, was voted off by the audience. In fact Date's vote off prompted the judges - Sonu Nigam, Farah Khan and Anu Malik - to stage a walk-out. The fact remains that the judges have no say in such a decision.

As if this wasn't enough, Sandeep Acharya was declared the winner when it should have easily been NC Karunya. Acharya was lucky to win purely because he had more supporters for some reason or the other. In fact, Acharya was continuously criticised for his lack of all-round skills, and his choice of singing only Udit Narayan hits (of course to impress Narayan, who was one of the judge) didn't go down well with Nigam.

While Karunya's singing talent has been acknowledged from the time he launched his album in Telegu during his childhood. Despite being from an area where Hindi music channels are not widely watched, he reached the top echelon of this contest purely through his talent.

Indian Idol 2007 provided a perfect rags-to-riches story of Tamang, who worked as a policeman in Kolkata before becoming the first contestant of Indian-Nepalese origin to make it to the finals and win the title.

Paul was the judges' favourite with his superior singing skills but Tamang had heavy support from his community who voted heavily for him. Once again we have an undeserving winner, and we may get to see him in a video or two before he disappears again, giving way to latest Indian Idol.

Discrimination

And it's not just a question of choosing the better singing talent; not one of the finals has had a female contestant, despite producing some worthy talents including Ankita Mishra and Antara Mitra.

With the end of these three seasons, hope the makers of Indian Idol will look at modifying the rules of the show in a manner where one can win the talent hunt show based on his or her vocal abilities and not due to any physical appearance, sexual, racial and regional preferences.

Udit Narayan was not the judge in Indian Idol 2. So why would sandeep try to impress him ? By that means Amit Paul also sang Udit's song and got excellent comments.. so was he also trying to impress Udit.. ???

Prashant was getting heavy support from hometown...thts true n wht about Amit wasnt he getting support from his hometown as well.... Amit had performed better in galas than prashant i agree but why measuring with different yardstick....

Instead of Ankita, I think Deepali was much much much better in terms of pure singing talent..

all n all a rubbish article...

How mean you are? This is just the article..if Deepali would have been so favorite..she would have reached top 4..but she could not garner the support which ankita received. Ankita was definitely favorite and garnered the support from fans...which took her to Top 4. The article is reality..why we people are so hypocrite ..to not accept the reality..

THIS ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!!!! Abhijeet Sawant did not win purely on looks, he had the best voice and singing in the whole season! and you know if both him and amit sana were equal then what got him through was his innocence and charm! not his looks! Abhijeet Sawant was the true winner and this article is not proving any what so ever point. Ya but Iagree Karunya and Amey were 10 times better then sandeep! yuck!

Like Amey and Karunya were better same way Rahul Vaidya, Rahul Saxena and Amit Sana were definatelly better than Abhijeet Sawant as a singer. But Abhijeet Sawant is still bareable than Sandeep and Prashant.
