TV actors not a patch on Bollywood

Amit Tandon, better known as Manthan in Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, came to Mumbai from New York to be an actor. He spent his time veejaying for a while before he participated in Indian Idol where he was among the top ten finalists. Just three hours after being eliminated, Amit was offered a Balaji TV serial, Kaisa Yeh Pyaar Hai.

In what way are you similar to Manthan?
Manthan loves his mother and his sister a lot; he is willing to do everything they ask of him and I am just like that. On the other hand, Manthan is a spoilt child, has a massive ego problem and is rude to almost everyone. That is definitely not me!

What do you think of Indian television soaps?
I just cannot associate with any of them- they're all the same. I think the Indian TV audiences deserve better soaps which don't follow the age old formula. There have to be more plots that capable of entertaining audiences.

Tell us something about Amit: Rebirth, your new album?
I've put in a lot of hard work and my expectations are really high. I've composed eight tracks for this album- no remixes; their all originals. The album is a mix of rock ballads, romantic songs and dance tracks. Some are in Hindi and some are Punjabi. I'd like to think there's a song for everyone on the album. I'm very excited.

Any plans to reprise your role in Kyunki…?
Not right now but when they do decide to bring Manthan back I hope he has a good, long track. Until now, they've been bringing him on the show, and then cutting him out and it keeps happening. His character has potential; the writers need to establish Manthan's character. I'm sure they will do it.

I don't think the quality of actors in the TV industry is even close to the quality of actors in the film industry. A film is a large project with a big canvas. Performances need to be excellent or else it won't get noticed. On the other hand, on TV, an actor can be hidden and bad performances can be accommodated. TV is going to take a long time to prove itself.

Maayka's production house gets the boot for poor time management, high overhead costs and delays

Ranjib Mazumder

Classic production house, which was producing Maayka, has been sacked by the channel (Zee) due to poor time management and high overhead costs. The development has been kept closely guarded, but our channel sources say that Dheeraj Kumar's production house Creative Eye is taking over.

The cast of Maayka
Since the inception of Maayka, the production house has been unable to get anything right. There have always been problems meeting the deadlines, which has irritated the channel for a long time.

As the channel also shares a certain percentage of the cost, they contribute Rs five-six lakh rupees per episode, which is very high for a serial like Maayka.

For every shoot which is supposed to wrap up within eight hours, it would take sixteen hours. This resulted in failure to meet with deadlines.

Moreover, there have been problems with uplinking the daily episodes, resulting in high costs.

On the other hand, Dheeraj Kumar's Ghar Ki Lakshmi Betiyaan has been a success. And he has been pitching to take over another serial for the channel. Now, the channel has decided to hand over Maayka to him.

Anajana Sood, creative head of Classic Production house, however refused to divulge any details. "It's just too early to talk about anything," she said.

Dheeraj Kumar, on the other hand said, "We just had a discussion over the issue. I cannot talk about it; it's the channel's call ultimately."

Feeling safe in Mumbai?

The ugly underworld serpent has once again thrust it's fangs and who's re-appeared on it's hit-list? The entertainment industry. Does that mean that Mumbai is no longer safe for the celebs? We discuss the same with some of our television stars and also find out if the underworld nexus intimidates them. Different people, different opinions…read on…

Gaurav Chopraa
Mumbai is pretty safe compared to most metropolitans across the globe. You can roam about in the city with your mobile phone even at 4 am without the fear of being robbed. Mugging is rampant everywhere else. Talking about the underworld, they can be connected with any field, be it entertainment, construction… Any big business attracts the underworld. The glam quotient of the industry is an added attraction for them, they like meeting stars, having them at their parties. The underworld does exist and it can unpredictably affect anyone, even someone like me who has no connections with anyone whom I think might be linked.

Barkha Bisht
Mumbai is the safest city. Even at 2am I can travel all alone which I can't do in Delhi. I don't feel scared of the underworld. One needs to have unlimited money to be terrorised by them and I don't have that kind of money (laughs). With what I have read in media, the underworld and the entertainment industry are surely connected.

Moulli Ganguly
Mumbai is a safe city but it was a safer five years back. However, compared to other metros, it is definitely better placed. A woman can stay alone and commute even at late hours. As far as underworld goes there are different dimensions to it. I have not been introduced to this eerie side and don't even wish to come across it!

Neha Bamb
I don't have much to say about the underworld as I haven't seen anything personally. With all what I have read in papers I do think there is connection between the entertainment industry and the underworld. In my opinion Mumbai is safest city to dwell in and one can comfortably travel anywhere, anytime.

Nausheen Alii Sardar
During my school times my parents strictly wanted me to be off a filmi career as there were rumours that all the actresses are picked up by the underworld. Since last 4-5 years underworld has been lying low. I don't fear the underworld. In fact the closer I am getting with the film world more the safer I am finding it. I went to Karachi last year and found it as rich as Dubai. Mumbai I suppose is the second richest city yet there is no proper infrastructure. Probably we need to show off the money.
