Pune: An unusual 'fan' visited Kirana gharana maestro Pandit Bhimsen Joshi at his residence to wish him a happy 85th birthday here on Sunday evening.
What's more, Joshi was visibly pleased to see this fan and sang a few lines of his famous abhang, "Indrayani kaathi... devachi Alandi...", which made the fan respond with a happy 'tweet tweet'!
The fan we speak of was 'Sonya', a parrot owned by Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal trustee Vijay Dixit. Fans and well-wishers who visited Joshi's residence to wish him were surprised to see a parrot being taken inside his room and thought it was perhaps an inspired birthday gift.
However, those assembled in the room, got their answer when the cage was opened. The parrot promptly perched on Joshi's left shoulder with unmistakable familiarity. It seemed the two were old friends — a fact later confirmed by Joshi's disciple, Upendra Bhat. "Guruji has been a regular visitor to Dixit's residence for over 50 years and the parrot knows him well," Bhat said. The parrot apparently listens to Bhimsen's cassette of abhangs every day. When he saw Joshi, he kept up a constant chirrup till the Kirana gharana doyen obliged him by singing a few lines. The handful of guests who were witness to this impromptu performance were visibly moved to see this unique friendship.
Happy to hear Bhimsen's voice, the parrot remained on his shoulder, its beak lovingly pressed to his cheek.
Earlier, speaking to a few media representatives, Joshi stated that he still wanted to sing for his numerous fans. "However, my health does not permit it, but if the rasiks (fans) give me their blessings, who knows, I may sing again." When asked what type of music he listens to, Joshi stated that he liked to listen to old-timers. "I find them more to my liking," he remarked.
A steady stream of fans and disciples visited the residence all day to wish Joshi on his birthday. Many from outside Pune telephoned him and he spoke a few words to each.
On Saturday, the University of Pune vice-chancellor Narendra Jadhav arranged a special concert of Shriniwas Joshi — son and disciple of Bhimsen Joshi — and Shrikant Deshpande at his residence to mark the 85th birthday of the Kirana gharana maestro.
