Diwali, known as Deepavali, is one of India's most widely celebrated Hindu festivals. It signifies the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. "Diwali" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Deepavali" which means a row of lights. Deepa means light and Avali means row of lights.
The festival usually lasts for five days and is marked by the lighting of diyas (oil lamps), bursting of fireworks, feasting, and the exchange of gifts. The five-day celebration includes deep cleaning of the houses, lighting & arranging of diyas, making rangolis, Lakshmi puja, fireworks, gathering of family & gifts offerings, and a ritual where brothers visit their married sister's family.
In the northern parts of India, Diwali is celebrated with the story of the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya after defeating Ravana. Rows of clay lamps are lit signifying the grand welcoming of his return. Whereas in South India the story of Lord Krishna defeating the demon Narakasura is told. The western part of India remembers how the demon King Bali was sent to rule the nether world by Lord Vishnu.
While Diwali is primarily a Hindu festival, it is also celebrated by Jains, Sikhs, and some Buddhists, each community attributing different cultural and historical significance to the festival.
Team Crazy Creatives wish IFians Happy Diwali. May this Diwali be filled with love and positivity!
