Tum jiyo hazaron saal: Happy 90th Birthday, Asha ji!

So this thread has been a long time coming. And an apt occasion for it has arrived.

Asha Bhosle, or Asha Tai as she's fondly called, celebrates her 90th birthday today, 8th September, 2023.

And what an eventful, illustrious journey it's been for her!

For a long time, I would claim Asha Bhosle as my favorite female singer. Even above the established number one singers of that time, including her accomplished sister.

For, in my mind, every singer had a strong niche that they excelled in, but no one had the staggering versatility that Asha Bhosle had.

I think she knew it too, because she has sung every type of song there is and knocked each one out of the park. Classical, cabaret, bhajan, ghazal, romantic, sensual, fun-filled, poignant - you name it, and she's sung it. And sung it with class and elan.

And not just in Hindi but in several languages. She has had collaborations with international pop and rock heavyweights like Boy George, Robbie Williams & Michael Stipe to name just a few.

She re-invented herself time and again to cater to modern sensibilities. She experimented with various genres outside of Film music and came out on top in those too!

She was born into the illustrious Mangeshkar clan in Sangli, Maharashtra on 8 September 1933, the second of five children. She lost her father at the tender age of 9, after which the family moved to Mumbai where her eldest sister, Lata began working in films.

Asha sang her first song "Chala chala nav bala" for the Marathi film, Majha Bal (1943) when she was only 10. Her Hindi film break came in the form of the song, "Sawan aaya" in the film Chunariya (1948) with music composed by Hansraj Behl.

At the age of 16, she eloped with a much older Ganpatrao Bhosle creating a strain with her family that took years to mend.

Professionally too, she continued to struggle competing against established female playback singers such as Shamshad Begum and Geeta Dutt and of course, her own sister, Lata.

It was O.P. Nayyar that recognized her unique style and launched her in C.I.D (1956). There was no looking back for Asha from there on.

From Mera naam chin chin choo to Aao huzoor tumko, she has given a string of hits for O.P. Their personal and professional association ended abruptly and bitterly in the 1970s but Asha was an established artiste by then. Nothing and no one could shake her.

She has had fruitful associations with several music directors from R.D. Burman (whom she later married & lost as well) to A.R. Rahman. Khayyam insisted that only she would sing the songs for Umrao Jaan - a film that is still hailed as Asha's tour de force - where she had to sing in a lower octave than she was accustomed to.

Despite facing so many ups and downs, Asha Tai has always shown a strong resilience and a fierce joie-de-vivre that is reflected in her songs too.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ASHA TAI!

Thank you for the music & the memories!

Let's celebrate this legendary, talented, versatile artiste whose smile is as infectious as her songs.

I'm going to post my own Asha top 12, keeping it limited to one song per Music Director and to solo songs only.

I know there are scores I'll have missed, I'll leave it you guys to post some of her more popular songs, including duets. And of course, tidbits and trivia on her life and times are most welcome!

1. Sardar Mallik: Ae-gham-e-dil

Thokar (1953) Lyrics: Majaz Lucknowi

I hadn't heard Asha's version for a long time, I was more familiar with Talat's version, but she brings a different mood and emotion to this one! Love it!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADd6OHJd9Qo

2.  Naushad:  Ek baat kahoon mere piya

Amar (1954) Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Amar has great songs and this one gets lost among those others but nonetheless it's a beautiful one. Asha always remained second choice for Naushad, he made no bones of the fact that he preferred Lata but there are some rare Naushad-Asha gems like this one which make you think it's a pity he didn't use her more.

3.      Salil Chowdhary: Thandi thandi sawan ki puhaar

Jagte Raho (1956) Lyrics: Shailendra

Gosh I love this song and how beautifully Asha sings it. Sailida was also a self-confessed Lata loyalist but again, when you hear this song, it makes you wonder... what if he had used Asha more?

I couldn't decide between this one and Baag mein kali khili, that i love equally so one of you, please post that one!

4. S.D. Burman: Kali ghata chaye mora

Sujata (1959) Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

This was a difficult choice. Asha has sung some great songs for Dada Burman. She peaked around the time of his rift with Lata where she sang almost all his songs. I chose this one for the simplicity of the tune and the sweetness and yearning in Asha's voice.

When she sings, bolo kisi ka kya jaaye? I feel it in my bones!

Runner-up: O panchhi pyare from Bandini

5.      Jaidev: Jahan mein aisa kaun hai

Hum dono (1961) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Again an impeccable soundtrack and this one gets lost among the other more popular and well-loved ones but full marks to Asha for rendering Sahir's brilliant lyrics so deftly. Amazing song of hope and resilience!

6.      Hemant Kumar: Meri baat rahi mere mann mein

Sahib Biwi aur Ghulam (1962) Lyrics: Shakeel Badayuni

Runner up: Bhanwra bada naadaan from the same movie.

Asha Bhosle is a self-professed Hemant Kumar fan. She has confessed to loving his voice so much she named her first-born after him. She brings out the pathos in her voice exceptionally well in this one.

7. Roshan : Nigahein milane ko jee chahta hai

Dil hi toh hai  (1963) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

What a tune by Roshan in raag Yaman! And so beautifully sung. Asha is pitch perfect! Especially in the last stanza when she segues from the sargam to the words seamlessly. smiley32 Her Urdu diction is exemplary too.

8.      Ravi:  Aage bhi jane na tu

Waqt (1965) Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

This song! Just simply beautiful! smiley42 It's special to me! smiley10

9.      Shankar Jaikishen: Paan khaye sainya hamaro

Teesri Kasam (1966) Lyrics: Shailendra

Asha has sung dozens of songs for S-J but I love this one. The playfulness she brings to it? Unmatched!

10.      O.P. Nayyar:

So difficult to choose, there could be a top 10 Asha-OPN list. Heck, there could be an OPN/Asha Top 50! I picked this one for the sheer complexity of the tune and the consummate ease with which Asha renders it.

Honorary mentions: Dekho bijli dole & Aankhon se jo utri hai (I love love love this one! 😍)

Akeli hoon main piya aa

Sambandh(1969) Lyrics: Kavi Pradeep

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sz_a7Y4PT6Q

11.      R.D. Burman:

Ditto with RDB. But since the more popular ones will get posted anyway, I chose this one.

Ghar jayegi tar jayegi. I also love Bechara dil kya kare from this movie!

Khushboo(1975) Lyrics: Gulzar

  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tnUCYDU6D8I

12.      A.R. Rahman: Kahin aag lage lag jaave

Taal(1999) Lyrics: Anand Bakshi

I debated posting one of Rangeela's songs instead but you guys probably will. But my pick for Asha sings for ARR would be the Tamil song Vennila Vennila.

Who agrees that Asha Bhosle has perfected the art of humming? Anyone disputing it just has to listen to these duets (coincidentally all picturized on Nutan) where she only hums and another singer sings the actual words.

O nigahein mastana with Kishore Kumar from the movie Paying Guest (1957), Music: S.D. Burman, Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Bachpan ke din bhi kya din the with Geeta Dutt from the movie Sujata (1959), Music: S.D. Burman, Lyrics: Majrooh Sultanpuri

Pyaar par bas toh nahi hai with Talat Mehmood from the movie Sone ki chidiya (1958), Music: O.P. Nayyar, Lyrics: Sahir Ludhianvi

Alright, to make it a Baker's dozen I'm adding this song just cos I left out Madan Mohan, and I think this song definitely deserves a mention in Asha's formidable repertoire. (Yes, over the ever popular Jhumka gira re smiley9)

13. Madan Mohan: Shokh nazar ki bijliyan

Woh kaun thi (1964), Lyrics: Raja Mehdi Ali Khan

Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything. Plato

Well said, and very true.

Asha Bhonsle is a proficient and renowned Indian playback singer.

Asha was raised in a musical family and has a strong ambition to enter the music industry from a young age. She started singing in her 10th year!

With the dominance of prominent female singers like Lata, Suraiya, Geeta Dutt, and others leading the playback industry in the 1950s, it was difficult for her to break into the musical scene. Nonetheless, Asha made her mark with her distinct and clear voice.

Her versatility impressed numerous music directors, who offered songs ranging from classical to club hits.

This philosophical and monumental song is one of her best, in my opinion.
