Today marks the 77th Independence Day of India. 15th August 1947, the most memorable day in every Indian's life. This was the day on which every Indian found a reason to live with self-respect and dignity. Our freedom fighters did huge sacrifices, struggled a lot, went through so much pain and suffering, and even lost their lives so that WE the next generations can live happily and freely.


Mangal Pandey was an Indian soldier/sepoy working in the British East India Company. In 1857, he protested against the use of cow and pig lard that are greased on cartridges. In order to load the weapon the soldiers were supposed to bite the greased cartridges. Mangal Pandey led other sepoys to protest against the use of cow and pig lard and was arrested and hanged by British officers. This uprising is often called The First War of Independence or The First Sepoy Mutiny.

Peer Ali Khan, another rebel also took part in the same sepoy mutiny and was one of the 14 soldiers that were hanged by the Britishers.

Tiruppur Kumaran was holding the Indian nationalist flag and marching ahead when he was shot three times when he participated in the freedom struggle in January 1932. He was still holding the flag when he was found dead. He is often remembered as 'Kodi Kaatha Kumaran' in Tamil which means 'Kumaran who protected the flag'.

Garimella Satyanarayana was a poet from Andhra Pradesh who wrote numerous poems and songs and motivated people to fight for independence and protest against British rule.

Kandathil Eapen Mammen or K.E.Mammen was expelled from the College of Fine Arts Trivandrum and was also jailed for motivating students to join the freedom struggle.

Baji Rout was the youngest freedom fighter from Odisha. A boat boy by profession, he was shot and killed by a British officer when he refused to ferry him and other officers across the Brahmani river on the night of 11 October 1938. He was only 12 then.

Jhalkari Bai, a Dalit woman was one of the most important soldiers in Rani Laxmi Bai's army. During a war with the Britishers, Jhalkari Bai wore the Queen's robes and fought bravely with them in spite of being wounded badly and giving up her life.

These are just some of the names whose contributions to the freedom struggle have been worthy and great.
