Respect to the individuals (martyrs) that sacrificed their lives so that the country could obtain freedom. Their courage can never be matched and we wouldn't be here without them.
The other side to this is that we should also acknowledge the generational trauma that also occurred as a result of the partition. How many lives were lost, how many people had to rehome and start all over, how many families were split apart, and how this impacted future generations. How colonialism impacted India and how the effects of that are still seen today.
The country may have obtained freedom but there are still many steps to be taken, healing still needs to be done. Which is why it's so important to talk about it all - the good, the bad, and the ugly.
