Theme Of The Week # 11
Historical/ Mythological songs
Hindu Mythology has always been a subject of Bollywood and regional movies from time immemorial. And no, I am not talking only about such movies that portray Gods and demigods along with the tales of their origin. There are many melodious songs based on Mythological themes in many social movies.
Needless to say, there’s a very thin line that separates mythological songs, folklore songs based on epic stories, and devotional songs. .
Our film makers are equally obsessed with the legendary Radha-Krishna duo, and this can be seen in films with a direct Radha-Krishna relationship as well as an implied one like Mughal-E-Azam in a dedicated form or the satire Pyaasa or even the challenger Lagaan.
The heroine, Anarkali herself sings for Rani Jodhabai, in Mughal-E-Azam who is a devout worshipper of Krishna, the duality of Radha, surrounded by gopis , singing for Krishna is amply evident. She sings the song Mohe panghat pe Nandlal ched gayo re. The song vividly describes the innocent but naughty pranks played by Krishna . So, we see a complete absence of religious barrier. Not to forget the beautiful classical song Madhuban mein Radhika..
India's cinema has truly managed to immortalize the mythological concepts of Radha and Krisha, Ram and Sita, Shiv and Parvathi over the years.
