Prologue
She picked up her son of some months and amidst the stares and musings of her neighbors, she knocked on her maternal home. When the heat of their stares and barbs of their talks became too much to bear she looked away and knocked some more.
“Arre aa rahi hoon baba! Aa rahi hoon!” She heard her before she saw her and her eyes became wet. She longed to fall in her embrace and let out the sorrow that was eating her alive. The door opened and she was staring at the face that represented motherhood for her. “Aye tu? Tu idhar? Yahan kya kar rahi hai beta?” She heard the question and her eyes began to tear up.
“Main wahan se aa gayi hoon. Ab wapas nahin jaaungi.” She replied brokenly. Her Maasi took her son away from her and began to pat his back lovingly and then turned towards her in confusion and fear.
“Kya keh rahi hai? Dimagh theek che?” Her Maasi glared at her but there was no real heat.
“Who hamesha ke liye chod kar ja chuka hai mujhe Maasi. Ek hafte pehle hi uski death ho gayi.” She revealed. Her Maasi watched her in shock and then realised that she hadn’t yet allowed her daughter to enter the house. They were speaking in front of all and the neighbors had already heard her proclamation. The air was alive with gossip as they pointed at her. She felt faint and almost let go.
“Chal andar.” She uttered and pulled her inside, shutting the door on the world.
