FATE TWISTED BY LOVE

PROLOGUE

"Nanu... Main abhi shaadi nahi karna chaahta... Aap jaante hai na main yeh shaadi vaadi mein nahi maanta... Aur aap please mujhe force mat kijiyega... Maine aaj tak aapki har baat maani hai... Par yeh nahi maan sakta... Please aage se iss baat par koi discussion nahi hoga... Main shaadi nahi karunga, yeh mera aakhri faisla hai...", Sameer Maheshwari, grandson of Jayprakash Maheshwari stomped off in anger leaving his grandfather alone in the study room...

After an hour, he was back with his luggage, "Nanu... Main London jaa raha hun... Ek bohot hi important deal finalize karni hai... Agar mujhe yeh deal mil gayi toh mujhe wahaan thode din aur rehna padega... Shayad ek mahina bhi lag jaaye... Waise main aapko call karke batata hi rahunga... Yahan ka sab kaam Munna aur Pandit handle kar lenge... Main chalta hun... Bas yahi kehne waapis aaya tha... Waise Ramdhari, Munna aur Pandit yahi honge, fir bhi apna khayaal rakhiyega..." He left even before Nanu could say anything to him...

"Pata nahi yeh ladka kab shaadi ke liye taiyaar hoga... Main toh bas itna chaahta hun ki hamare Sameer ke zindagi mein aisi jeevan sangini aaye, jo uske akelepan ko hamesha ke liye mita de... Uski zindagi sirf khushiyon se bhar de... Hamare Sameer se itna pyaar kare ki usse kisi aur ki kami mehsoos hi na ho... Jaanki... Pata nahi kab mera yeh sapna poora hoga... Hamara naati kab shaadi ke liye maanega... Mujhe kuch bhi karke usse manana hoga... Kisise kiya hua vaada nibhaane ka time aa gaya hai... Bas prarthna karta hun ki jis ladki ko humne saalon pehle chuna tha wohhh Sameer ko sahi raasta dikhaaye aur uski wohh chavi sab ke saamne laaye jo usne kabhi kisiko dikhayi nahi hai... Jaanki... Bhale saari duniya hamare Sameer ko ek ziddi, gairzimmedaar, matlabi aur khudgarz insaan samjhte ho... Par main jaanta hun apne naati ko, wohhh bilkul bhi aisa nahi hai... Bohot bhola hai, kisi ke bhi behkaave mein aa jaata hai, isliye sab uska faayda uthaate hai... Uska dil ekdum masoom hai... Bohot gehre zakhm bhi khaaye hai... Bas wohhh ladki hamare bacche ke saare zakhm bhar de... Uska khaali dil apne pyaar se bhar de... Sameer ne khud ko itna akela kar diya hai ki mujhe kabhi kabhi darr lagta hai Jaanki ki kahin wohhh koi galat raaste par na chal pade... Mujhe Sameer ko shaadi ke liye manana hi hoga... Bohot jaldi manana hoga...", Jayprakash Maheshwari stood in front of the portrait of his deceased wife, pouring his heart out...

In the other corner of the city, someone was crying her heart out in front of the Shiv Idol... "Bhagwaanji... Aap aisa kaise kar sakte hai mere saath... Aapne pehle hi mere Maa-baba ko apne paas bulaa liya tha aur aaj mere Nanaji ko bhi chinna chahte hai... Mere zindagi ki aakhri kadi chinkar mujhe ekdum anaath kar rahe hain... Main poori zindagi akeli kaise guzaar sakti hun... Aap na mujhe bhi apne paas bula lijiye... Main bhi jeena nahi chahti ab..." Her outrage on God was broken by a call...

She picked up the call & shivered after hearing the news... She ran towards the hospital which was just next to the Shiv temple... She walked hurriedly to the ICU unit where her grandfather was admitted, who was critical at the moment due to kidney failure... As she entered the room, she saw the doctor & nurse standing near the bed examining the reports & checking her grandfather's pulse...

The doctor turned to her & spoke in a firm voice, "Dekhiye... Main aapko koi jhoothi umeed nahi dunga... Aapke Nanaji ke paas sirf kuch ghante bache hai... Aap aapke family members ko bula lijiye..." She froze at his words but somehow murmured, "Hamari koi family nahi hai doctor... Bas main aur Nanaji hi hain..." The doctor just nodded & left with the nurse...

She slowly walked towards the bed & sat on the stool that was placed beside it... She softly called out, "Nanaji... Nanaji..." He opened his eyes slowly & looked at her with misty eyes... "Naina..." His voice was too low to be heard... He gestured her to sit next to him on the bed & she obliged... She sat beside him, holding his weak hand between her palms... He spoke in a low voice, "Beta... Ab mere jaane ka samay aa gaya hai... Bas ek aakhri kaam kardo... Meri uss diary mein ek number likha hai... Unhe phone karke yahaan bula lo..."

She immediately got up & searched for the number... She found the number on the last page... She immediately called up that number & spoke, "Hello... Ji main Naina Agarwal bol rahi hun... Shri Jayantilal Parekh ki naati... Aap jaldi se City hospital aa jaiye... Mere Nanaji aapse milna chaahte hai..."

The person on the other side of the call agreed immediately & promised to come as soon as he can... It was almost after an hour that the person arrived... Naina was still sitting next to her grandfather & was caressing his head... She turned towards the door as she heard it open swiftly... There stood a man who was of the same age as her Nanaji... He walked towards them & spoke, "Jayanti... Tum yahaan kaise???" He looked at Naina who was already crying, "Beta... Bolo kya hua hai isse???"

Naina spoke between sobs, "Mere Nanaji ki dono kidneys fail ho gayi hai... Aur abhi doctor bolkar gaye ki inke paas jyada waqt nahi hai..." She started crying again... Her Nanaji opened his eyes hearing her weep to find his friend, Jayprakash Maheshwari, standing in front of him... He smiled seeing his best friend after so many years, "Jay... Accha hua tu aa gaya... Yeh lo sambhalo apni amaanat..." Naina's Nanaji said while keeping her hand in his friend's hand... "Jay... Vaada poora karne ka time aa gaya hai... Mere paas jyada time nahi hai... Aaj se main meri Naina ki zimmedaari tumhe sounpta hun... Main umeed karta hun ki tum hamara kiya hua vaada zaroor poora karoge aur meri bacchi ka dhyan rakhoge..."

Saying those last & final words, he left the world... Naina couldn't believe that her Nanaji was no more... She cried & cried until Jayprakash Maheshwari took her with him making a decision that it was time to fulfil the promise made to his deceased friend some years ago, sealing Sameer's & Naina's fate which was going to change their life forever...

Hello everyone...

I'm back with the first chapter...

Sorry for the delay & thanks for having patience with the updates...

FATE TWISTED BY LOVE

CHAPTER 1

Naina was lying on the bed still crying her heart out after finishing the cremation ritual of her Nanaji. She was still blaming God for whatever she had lost till now & was going through a rough time as she had no one left in her family. She had heard her Nanaji's final words & was confused with what that exactly meant. But then she had forgotten all about it when he breathed his last & bid goodbye to the world.

She was so much of a crying mess that she hadn't realized when she was taken to a huge mansion by his Nanaji's best friend. After sobbing for the next hour or so, she drifted to sleep. It was the constant knocking on the door that made her open her eyes. She rubbed her eyes watching the alien surroundings around her. Where was she? And suddenly everything came back as a flashback. She remembered that she was at someone else's place, at her grandfather's best friend's place to be precise.

She opened the door still in the same distraught condition. There was someone standing on the door holding a tray of food for her. "Mujhe kuch nahi khaana. Bhook nahi hai. Aap please yeh waapis le jaaiye.", she said in a low voice. But the other person seemed reluctant, "Arey aise kaise. Main raat ko aaya tha khaana lekar, par jab aapne darwaaza nahi khola toh main waapas chala gaya. Aapne kal raat se kuch nahi khaaya hai. Abhi toh khaana hi padega. Warna Nanaji mujhe bhi khaane nahi denge."

He walked in her room & placed the tray on the bed side table. "Waise mera naam Ramdhari hai. Aapko kuch bhi chahiye ho toh aap mujhe aawaaz laga dena. Main fauran aa jaunga." He was about to walk towards the door but stopped & turned to face her, "Ummm... Kya main aapko didi bula sakta hun?"

She realized that she hadn't uttered a single word, so she spoke softly, "Mera naam Naina hai." He smiled & asked again, "Toh kya main aapko Naina didi bula sakta hun?" She finally smiled a bit & nodded. "Naina didi... Aap fresh ho jaiye aur naashta kar lijiye. Main aata hun. Ummm... Aapka saaman udhar rakha hai." Saying that, he went back to his work.

Naina looked around the room for the first time & gasped after seeing the huge lavish bedroom. She saw that her bags were kept near the wardrobe as pointed by Ramdhari. She took a deep breath & went to freshen up. If she was surprised seeing her bedroom, she looked stunned standing at the entrance of the washroom. She had never seen such a huge bathroom ever in her life.

She entered hesitantly & then freshened up. She was still not in a mood to eat. She was hungry but the tears & her past kept making its presence because of which she couldn't eat. She tried to divert her mind & busied herself in arranging her clothes in the wardrobe. She placed a small photo frame of her Nanaji on the bed side table & gazed at it lovingly. It was over an hour when there was a knock again, & she reluctantly went to open the door.

She was surprised to see her Nanaji's friend standing in front of her who had a genuine smile on his face. "Kya main andar aa sakta hun beta?", he asked softly. She moved away to let him in. He sat on the couch whereas she sat across him on the bed. He looked around the room & his gaze landed on the untouched breakfast.

"Naina... Main jaanta hun ki tumhe kuch khaane ki iccha nahi ho rahi hogi. Par khaana zaruri hai. Tumhe apni sehat ka dhyaan rakhna hoga. Aur tumhe dekhkar lag raha hai ki tumne peechle kuch dinon se thik se khaaya nahi hai." She didn't say anything & lowered her head, tears pooling in her eyes again hearing the concern in his voice. She still didn't know why she was here. Why her grandfather's best friend had brought her to this huge mansion? And what promise they were talking about in the hospital?

When she didn't say anything, he continued, "Naina... Main tumhara dukh bohot acche se samajh sakta hun. Tumne kam umar mein hi apne maa-baba ko kho diya. Sirf Jay hi tumhara parivaar tha, sahara tha. Beti... Tumhara na khaane se tumhare maa-baba yaa tumhare Nanaji waapis toh nahi aayenge na. Socho wohhh log jahaan kahin bhi hain, unhe tumhe iss haal mein dekhkar kitna bura lag raha hoga."

She was already sobbing remembering her Nanaji. She didn't have much memories with her parents & couldn't recollect much as she had lost her parents in a car accident, when she was three years old. Nanu sat next to her, "Dekho... Main tumhare Nanaji ka bohot achha dost hun." She immediately looked at him & he smiled, "Main dost tha, yeh nahi bolunga, kyunki Jayanti aaj bhi mere iss dil mein, mere zindagi mein moujud hai. Uski yaadon ko main kabhi marne nahi dunga. Aur tumhe bhi yahi karna hai Naina. Unhe apni yaadon mein zinda rakhna hai, tumhe khush rehna hoga, jisse unki aatma ko bhi shanti mile."

His words finally making some sense & she cried her heart out hugging him. Nanu kept patting her head, consoling her. Her sobs continued for a while & then she slowly quietened down. When she opened her eyes to see him, she saw the same love & warmth as she felt with her Nanaji. She didn't know why but she thought that she felt connected to him as if she knew him from before.

Nanaji called out Ramdhari, "Suno... Naina aur mera khaana yahin le aao. Hum saath mein khaayenge." Ramdhari nodded & he let his tears flow too after seeing the vulnerable look on Naina's face. He took away the breakfast tray with him. He was back in the next ten minutes holding two fully served plates. He kept the plates on the bed next to them & dragged the table in front of them. He placed the plates & filled two glasses of water.

Nanu knew that she won't eat as her mind was still occupied with the sudden turn of events in her life. He started feeding her & she quietly ate this time. Ramdhari smiled the brightest & left them alone. Nanu too finished his lunch after feeding her. Naina had many questions for him but right now her head was drumming badly. She needed to rest.

Nanu somehow could see her condition. He took away the plates with him & came back with a tablet. She took it silently & gulped it down. "Naina... Tum ab thoda aaram karlo. Shaam ko milenge. Agar tumhe thik lage toh main neeche hi rahunga. Aa jaana. Chalo ab so jao." On hearing him, she closed her eyes & drifted to sleep immediately.

She was again woken up by constant knocks on the door. She smiled a little seeing Ramdhari standing at the door. "Naina Didi... Raat ke aath baj gaye hai. Aap uthi nahi isliye main aa gaya aapko uthaane. Wohhh Nanaji aapka khaane ke liye intezaar kar rahe hai. Aap jaldi aa jaiyega." He didn't wait to listen what she wanted to say as if already guessing that she would refuse for dinner.

Naina freshened up & joined Nanu, she knew that she shouldn't make him wait for dinner. She didn't eat much but at least she had started eating on her own. "Naina... Main jaanta hun ki tumhare mann mein bohot se sawaal honge mere liye aur main unn sab sawaalon ke jawaab bhi dunga tumhe. Par wohh sab tab hi mumkin hoga jab tum hamare saath khushi khushi rahogi. Kya Naina tum mujhe apne zindagi mein apna Nanu samjhogi, apna parivaar samjhogi? Main yeh nahi keh raha ki tum mujhe apne Nanaji ki jagah do, main bas yeh chaahta hun ki tum mujhe tumhari zindagi mein shaamil karo. Kya tum mujhe Nanu bula sakti ho? Kya apni zindagi mein mujhe apne parivaar maan sakti ho?"

She was already crying & she knew that she felt connected to this person instantly. She hugged him again & slowly muttered, "Nanaji... Kya main aapko Nanaji bula sakti hun?" Nanu was the happiest & took her in a fatherly hug, promising himself to take proper care of her & her life ahead.

Days passed & the bond between them strengthened. She started sharing all that she had faced growing without her parents. She told him how Nanaji took care of her & her studies. She had topped in the University & finished her graduation on scholarship. On Nanu's insistence, she had confessed that she had wanted to study further but because of their financial conditions she couldn't do it. He asked her if she would still want to pursue her further education & she agreed happily. She wanted to be busy with something & learning seemed the best way out.

Nanu also shared some fond memories of his college days that he had spent with her Nanaji. He also kept talking about his deceased wife, but most of the time she heard was all about his grandson, Sameer. She had seen their pictures. She somehow felt some strange feelings in her heart seeing his handsome smiling face. She was instantly attracted to him. But something in his picture had caught her attention. His deep chocolaty eyes. The sudden pull she was feeling towards him stunned her. She was never the one to take interest in guys. But one glance at his picture, & she was fascinated.

She thought, if this is what she was feeling with just looking at his photo, what would happen when she would face him. Nanu told her that he was gone to London to finalize some deal & would be back soon. Now she was desperately waiting for his return, to check whether the fascination was limited to his pictures only, or she would be charmed by his presence too.

She was getting used to the whole mansion by now. Nanu & Ramdhari had helped her to come out from her glum life. She started smiling & was happy to find a small sweet family in them. She even started cooking with Ramdhari as it was her favorite thing to do. She had always enjoyed cooking with her Nanaji. Nanu enjoyed the meals heartily.

Munna & Pandit came by one morning to check on him & were surprised to see the new guest in the house. They wanted to ask about her & waited for Nanu to introduce them. But he didn't. Instead, he diverted their attention & asked them about their work. They were intrigued but didn't voice it out.

Once they were out of the house, Munna spoke while driving his car, "Yaar... Nanaji ne toh hume uss ladki ke baare mein kuch bataaya hi nahi. Par wohhh hai kaun? Aur uss ghar mein kyun reh rahi hai? Sameer ne toh kabhi kisi cousin ke baare mein nahi bataaya."

Pandit replied in an irritated tone, "Mujhe nahi pataa yaar Chenu. Ek toh wohhh Nanaji ne bhi kitne aasaani se hamara dhyaan uss ladki par se hataa diya. Mujhe lagta hai hume Sameer se poochna chahiye. Shayad usse kuch pataa hoga."

He instantly called his friend & it went unanswered, "Ab yeh bhi phone nahi uthaa raha.", Pandit was frustrated. They had just reached their office when his mobile rang, "Hello. Sameer." They seemed happy that he had called back immediately.

"Pandit... Itne subah subah kaun call karta hai? I really hope it's something important or else I'm going to kill you both when I will be there." His friends chuckled at his sudden threat but that didn't deter them from teasing their best friend. "Sameer... Hume pataa hai ki wahaan abhi che baj rahe honge. Aakhir London saadhe chaar ghanta peeche jo hai yahaan se. Par tujhe toh aadat hai na subah jaldi baje uthne ki. Toh wahaan jaakar aadat kaise chut gayi? Yaa kisi ke saath raat bhar itna busy ho gaya tha ki neend poori hi nahi hui teri?"

Sameer made some noises while getting up from the bed & thundered, "Tune yeh poochne ke liye phone kiya hai? Aur agar haan toh mujhe faltu ki baatein karne mein koi interest nahi hai. Bye." Before he could disconnect, Munna spoke, "Sameer... Hum abhi tere ghar se aa rahe hai. Nanaji se milne gaye the, unke haal chaal poochne."

Sameer waited patiently for him to continue & he did, knowing very well that his stupid friend hadn't called his Nanu from past ten days, "Nanaji ekdum thik hai aur... aur... wohhh... wahaan... wahaan...", Munna stuttered thinking if he should ask him or not. "Yeh wohhh... wahaan... Kya laga rakha hai? Sidhe se bol na kya baat hai, aise hakla kyun raha hai?"

Hearing Sameer's worried voice, Munna looked at Pandit for help. "Ummmm... Sameer... Tere ghar par ek ladki thi. Hume laga ki Nanaji uska introduction denge hume, par aisa kuch nahi hua. Wohh ladki ko pehle kabhi tere ghar mein nahi dekha. Isliye bas jaanna tha ki wohhh kaun hai. Humne isliye call kiya ki shayad tujhe iss baare mein kuch pataa ho.", Pandit said everything in a go.

There was silence for a whole minute & they thought that the call was disconnected. Munna was about to cut the call but then they heard his voice, "Mujhe nahi pataa wohh ladki kaun hai. Aur wahaan rehkar yeh pataa lagaana tum dono ka kaam hai. Kuch bhi karo, kaise bhi karke mujhe uss ladki ke baare mein sab information chahiye. Samjhe. Main sirf ek din de raha hun tum dono ko. I want to know who the hell is living in my house.", saying that the call went off.

Munna & Pandit frowned at each other, "Ponga... Isne toh hume hi uljhan mein daal diya. Ab hum log kaise pataa lagayenge ki wohhh ladki kaun hai aur Sameer ke ghar mein kyun reh rahi hai." "Chenu... Kuch toh sochna padega aur hamare dost ke liye pataa bhi lagaana padega." They left to their respective cabins for now to start their work.

Nanu was a little tensed after his favorite Rahu-Ketu left. He had seen them glancing in Naina's way a lot of times. They had waited for him to make the introductions. But he didn't. Nanu didn't want to take any chances for now. Right now, he didn't want her to cross their paths. He was afraid that these guys would judge her wrongly & the same would be made known to their best friend who was afar right now

Sameer hadn't called Nanu since the day he had left from here. He had just informed via his assistant that he had reached London & that was it. No messages. No calls. Nothing. Even Nanu hadn't attempted to call his grandson. He knew that Sameer was still upset with the whole marriage conversation before he had left.

Nanu somewhere knew that his Rahu-Ketu would've already talked to Sameer about Naina by now & he was waiting for his grandson's call. But that didn't come the whole day. Instead, Munshiji came visiting him in evening to discuss some important aspects related to the NGO, that they had opened a few years ago. They were discussing when his Rahu-Ketu entered the house again for the second time that day.

Nanu knew the reason & somewhere he also knew that his grandson was behind this. He should've expected this. Mundit sat beside Nanu. Ramdhari served tea & snacks to them. Munna's & Pandit's gaze moved to the garden where she was watering the plants. Following their gazes, Munshiji asked, "Jayprakashji... Yeh ladki kaun hai? Isse pehle toh kabhi nahi dekha yahaan."

Mundit waited patiently to hear Nanu's reply. They had thought of directly asking him about her but they were glad seeing Munshiji here & now that he had already asked about her, they were curiously waiting for the introduction. Nanu took a deep breath & called her, "Naina... Beta, yahaan aao." She stopped in her tracks as she hadn't noticed the sudden guests. "Aao. Idhar baitho." She sat next to Nanu & looked at the others nervously. "Munshiji... Aap toh mere dost, Jayantilal Parekh ko jaante ho na?" He nodded & Nanu continued, "Naina uski naati hai. Aur Naina, yeh hai Munshiji, hamare NGO ka sab kaam kaaj yahi dekhte hai. Aur yeh dono..."

He pointed towards his Rahu-Ketu, "Yeh dono Munna aur Pandit hai. Sameer ke best friends. Maheshwari Industries mein Sameer ke saath kaam karte hai." She bent forwards to touch Munshiji's feet & he blessed her wholeheartedly. She just acknowledged Mundit with a smile & they too smiled back.

Munshiji spoke, "Arey waah. Yeh toh bohot acchi baat hai. Naina yahaan hai toh Jayantilal kahaan hai? Unse milkar bohot time ho gaya hai. Unhe bhi bulaaiye, unse bhi mil lete hai." Nanu turned to her & spoke calmly, "Naina... Apne liye bhi chai le aao." She understood the pretext of leaving them alone & she left towards the kitchen to help Ramdhari. She didn't want to have tea now, but somehow, she had started missing her Nanaji again.

Nanu turned to Munshiji & Mundit, "Mera dost Jayanti ab iss duniya mein nahi raha. Dus din pehle hi wohhh chal basa aur main Naina ko yahaan mere saath le aaya. Toh aap uske saamne Jayanti ki baat mat kijiye. Bohot mushkil se bacchi ne hasna sikha hai. Uske Nanaji hi uski aakhri kadi the uske parivaar mein. Aap toh jaante hi hai na ki Rama aur Rakesh bohot pehle hi chal base the."

Munshiji nodded in understanding & pitied Naina who had lost her whole family. Nanu looked at the gloomy faces of his Rahu-Ketu & smiled, "Kyun Rahu-Ketu? Tumhe bhi jawaab mil gaya na? Isiliye waapis aaye the na?" They didn't react but only nodded. Even Nanu was surprised that they didn't ask anything more & left the house saying that they will come regularly to check on them.

Once inside his car, Munna spoke, "Yaar... Nanaji ki sab baatein sunkar ek taraf mujhe uss ladki ke liye bura bhi lag raha hai aur dusri taraf mujhe aisa bhi lag raha hai ki kahin wohh ladki Nanaji ka faayda na utha rahi ho. Kuch samaj nahi aa raha Ponga." Even Pandit sat there in silence listening to his friend's words. Both were already confused with all that they had heard & suddenly Pandit's mobile rang.

He showed his phone's screen to his friend & took a deep breath, "Hello... Haan Sameer." On the other side of the call, Sameer was restless to hear about the sudden appearance of a girl in his house. "Pandit... Tujhe pataa hai na ki maine kyun call kiya hai. Toh ab mujhe bataa ki wohh ladki kaun hai." Pandit turned his mobile on speaker mode & asked Munna to take over.

"Sameer... Ummmm... Wohh ladki Nanaji ke dost ki naati hai." "Toh mere ghar pe kya kar rahi hai?", he hollered from the other end. His friends were losing their patience too as he wasn't allowing them to speak. "Sameer... Nanaji ke best friend kuch din pehle hi guzar gaye hai aur isliye uss ladki ko Nanaji ghar le aaye."

"Ab humara ghar dharamshaala ban gaya hai.", he again cut Munna's talk. "Was he going to hear the whole thing for once without interrupting him", mused Munna in his mind. This time though Pandit lost his patience & spoke, "Tujhe agar hamari baat sunni hi nahi hai toh hum bhi aage kuch nahi baatayenge. Khud hi phone kar Nanaji ko aur pooch le tujhe jo bhi jaanna ho wohh...", saying that Pandit disconnected their call.

Munna looked at his best friend with amusement. Had he seriously disconnected the call? "Ponga... Tune Sameer ka call kaat diya?", he asked raising his eyebrow. Pandit exhaled, "Haan... Kaat diya phone. Usse hamari baat sunni hi nahi hai. Chenu... Tujhe bhi pataa hai ki jabse wohhh London gaya hai, usne ek baar bhi Nanaji ko phone nahi kiya. Hamara best friend kab se itna badal gaya yaar. Pehle toh aisa nahi tha. Jab bhi jahaan bhi jaata, Nanaji ko roz phone karta, par iss baar aisa kya hua hai ki usne ek baar bhi Nanaji ke haalchaal poochne ko bhi phone nahi kiya. Kuch toh hua hai Sameer ke jaane se pehle aur yeh tu bhi jaanta hai ki wohhh hume abhi nahi bataayega."

Munna agreed but still was concerned, "Ponga... Agar kuch hua bhi hai toh Sameer hume baad mein bataa hi dega. Abhi usse hamari zarurat hai. Nanaji ke saath jo bhi hua ho, hum usse akela nahi chod sakte na?" Pandit closed his eyes remembering the promise they had made, when they were seven years old that they would never leave him alone...

With tears in his eyes, he dialed Sameer's number. He picked up the phone after few rings, "Hello... Aur kuch bolna reh gaya tha kya?" This time again Munna asked, "Sameer... Tu waapas kab aa raha hai? Dekh, tune dus din se Nanaji se baat nahi ki. Hum jaante hai ki kuch toh hua hai aur hum tujhe force nahi karenge hume bataane ke liye. Hum bas yahi chaahte hai ki tu ek baar unhe call kar, unse baat kar. Kya hum hamare best friend ko nahi jaante, hume pataa hai ki tu bhi Nanaji ko utna hi miss kar raha hai, jitna wohh tujhe kar rahe hai. Bhale hi unhone humse tumhare baare mein kuch nahi poocha, par unki aankhon mein dekhkar hum yeh jaan hi gaye ki wohh tujhe kitna miss kar rahe hai. Sameer... Please ek baar call toh kar le bhai."

On the other side of the call, Sameer's eyes pooled with tears & without uttering a word, he disconnected the call this time. Mundit didn't call him again, knowing that their friend needed some time alone & sort out the matter.

In London, Sameer was seated in his hotel room making final changes to his presentation. But now, after talking to his best friends, he knew that it was time to talk to his grandfather. When he had left for London, he was hell angry on his Nanu for almost forcing him to agree for marriage. Since childhood, he had agreed to each & everything that his Nanu had wanted. But this marriage thing wasn't acceptable to him.

Sameer had seen enough in his childhood that he had decided to never get married. He neither believed in marriages nor in love. He closed his eyes & remembered his past. How his father used to come home drunk & beat up his mother, how he left them for another woman & cheated on her mother, how her mother brought him to his Nanu's place & then committed suicide. Fresh tears made its way & he started crying after such a long time. He lost control on his feelings today, remembering his mother.

Nanu was the one who took care of him since he was seven years old. He taught him everything. Then how come he was treating him badly now. Just because of a marriage conversation, he wasn't talking to his grandfather from the last ten days. He hadn't even taken his blessings while leaving. He cursed himself for treating Nanu that way.

Making up his mind to apologize to Nanu, he immediately called up on the landline. He patiently waited for Nanu or Ramdhari to pick up the call. The call went through & he heard her voice for the first time, "Hello..." His heart skipped few beats hearing her soothing voice. She again said, "Hello... Kaun bol raha hai?" Had he dialed a wrong number. He saw the number on his mobile & it reflected 'HOME'. So, it wasn't a wrong number. Then who had picked up the call.

Instantly he remembered about the chat with his friends. So, she is the same girl. Before he could say more, Nanu took away the receiver from Naina's hand. "Hello... Kaun hai?" Sameer instantly stuttered after hearing Nanu's voice, "Hello... Nanu... Main... Main..." Nanu sighed in relief after hearing his grandson's voice after ten long days. He was missing him too much. Naina's presence had somehow calmed his heart down but yet he was missing his lifeline.

"Sameer... Beta... Kaisa hai tu?", Nanu finally spoke in a low voice, eyes misting with tears. Sameer's eyes misted too after hearing his Nanu's voice, "Main thik hum Nanu. Aap kaise hai?", his voice breaking at the end. Nanu understood that his stubborn grandson had called to apologize. He knew him enough.

After half a minute Sameer spoke, "Nanu... I'm sorry. Mujhe aise aapse baat karna band nahi karna chahiye tha. Maine nikalte waqt aapka aashirwaad bhi nahi liya, aapse thik se baat bhi nahi ki. I'm sorry Nanu. Please mujhe maaf kar dijiye." Nanu smiled knowing that Sameer would realize his mistake soon & make it up too.

"Sameer... Waapas kab aa rahe ho? Ab iss buddhe ko itna bhi mat tadpao beta." Sameer chuckled at the other end, "Aap buddha kise keh rahe hai? Aap toh abhi bhi jawaan hai Nanu. Kaho toh aapki shaadi ki baat chalaun? Dekhna kitne saare rishte aayenge aapke liye." They both laughed wiping their own tears. "Nanu... Main iss hafte aa jaunga. Kal final presentation dena hai. Agar deal final ho gayi toh main parso yahaan se nikal jaaunga."

They talked for few more minutes relating to the deal & then Sameer asked a bit hesitantly, "Nanu... wohhh... wohhh... Pehle phone kisne uthaaya tha?" Nanu wanted to laugh at his stuttering but avoided it. "Kyun? Tujhe Rahu-Ketu ne kuch bataaya nahi kya?" Sameer rubbed his neck in nervousness as he recalled how he was almost shouting on his friends today & didn't listen to the whole thing.

"Haaan... Thoda thoda bataaya. Kuch thik se samaj nahi aa raha tha... wohhh... wohhh... haaan... Network thik nahi tha na, isliye unki awaaz thik se nahi aa rahi thi." Nanu chuckled & Sameer understood that he was caught in his acting. "Beta... Main tumhara Nanu hun. Bachpan se jaanta hun tumhe. Koi network issues nahi the. Tere gusse ki wajah se unhone poori baat kahi hi nahi hogi tujhse. Kyun sahi kahaa na?"

Sameer wanted to kick himself for this. His anger was surely causing a lot of problems. He should learn patience so that he would henceforth talk to his friends patiently. His Nanu & his friends knew him too much. His thoughts broke when he heard Nanu's voice again, "Sameer... Tum ho na?"

"Haan... Main... Main yahin hun aur kahan jaunga.", he grumbled in a low voice. Nanu chuckled again & spoke, "Tum waapis aa jao. Fir usse thik se mil lena." He didn't have anything more to say now, "Chalo Sameer... Tum apne presentation par dhyaan do aur mujhe sone do. Thak gaya hun main. Jaldi waapas aana beta." Sameer bid his goodbye on a happy note. Before he could disconnect the call, he heard Nanu's voice, "Naina... Haldi wala doodh mere kamre mein hi rakhwa dena."

Sameer lost all his focus from the important presentation & his heart thudded loudly remembering her voice & her name, "NAINA..."

Hello everyone...

FATE TWISTED BY LOVE

CHAPTER 2

Naina's heart had skipped several beats when Nanu talked to his grandson over the call. She was helping Ramdhari to clean up the dining table, her focus entirely on Nanu's one sided conversation. She so wanted to hear his voice. After a while, she heard Nanu saying, "Tum waapis aa jao. Fir usse thik se mil lena."

She somewhere felt that he had asked Nanu about her & she felt butterflies dance in her stomach. Had he really asked about her? No. no. It wasn't possible. But she had heard the conversation which meant that his friends had told him about her. So, was he enquiring about her?

What would've been his reaction after knowing that she's staying here now? How will he react after seeing her here in his house? She cursed herself a little for thinking about his reactions. After finishing the call, Nanu asked her to bring the turmeric milk in his room, which broke her thoughts & she was back to reality.

On the other side, Sameer was thinking about her voice sounding so soft & soothing to him & her name 'Naina' had involuntarily stopped his heartbeats. He desperately wanted to go back to his home & meet this girl. He was amazed with these sudden feelings as he never felt such a strong pull towards anyone earlier. He admonished himself for losing his control on his feelings. He pushed aside his thoughts & busied himself in the presentation.

Both the poor souls kept tossing & turning in their respective beds thinking about the other. Nanu noticed a change in their behaviors since the call that night. Whenever the landline rang, Naina would run to pick it up & then her face would fall after handing over the call to him, knowing very well that it wasn't HIS call.

On the other side, Sameer called at different times of the day hoping that Naina would pick up his calls & he would hear her voice again. Their destiny was almost playing some games with them as whenever he called, she was busy in the kitchen or was in her room. Nanu was observing this from last two days & was happy seeing the restless souls. Maybe it was the right time to fulfil his promise & he made up his mind to have a talk with both of them together, once Sameer returned. But before taking that step, he wanted to see their reactions on seeing each other. He had to wait till his grandson returns.

The next day, Nanu & Naina went to Ahmedabad University for finishing the admission process for her post-graduation diploma. She was very much happy that her life was finally getting back on track. That night she slept peacefully. Sameer's work had prolonged his stay in London.

When she got up early the next morning, she was pissed. The tap in her bathroom wasn't working & she wasn't able to freshen up for the day. Cursing under her breath, she moved to Sameer's room to shower. She would see to it that the tap was fixed today itself as she can't keep coming to his room for showering. It had already happened twice earlier.

She took a long shower washing her hair too. But as she was done with her shower, she realized that she hadn't brought her clothes along. She again cursed some more. She had a habit of changing in her room as she didn't want her dresses to be wet in the bathroom. But today in her hurry & also because of her habit, she had forgotten to bring her clothes. She wrapped one towel around her hair first & then another around her body & quickly opened the door.

As she stepped out of the bathroom, she bumped into a hard chest. She stumbled & was about to fall, when two strong arms pulled her safely, protecting her from the fall. The sudden action made her stumble more & she landed on the same hard chest. On a reflex, her hands held his shoulders tightly & his were circled around her waist. She had closed her eyes in fear.

She stayed in his arms for few more minutes. When her heartbeats were stable, she realized that she was still in someone's arms. She opened her eyes slowly & then she froze. She was in HIS arms. Her traitor heart had almost stopped beating the moment their eyes met. The deep brown chocolaty eyes which made her nights sleepless & restless were staring back at her.

Sameer was stunned with the turn of events in his room. He had taken a late-night flight & had landed here just an hour ago. But the journey from the airport to his house was a challenge. The cab in which he was riding had broken down in the middle & he had to hire another one which took another fifteen minutes. He was pissed, too much pissed.

He already had the keys of the house, so he hadn't pressed the doorbell. He didn't want to disturb Nanu's sleep. So, he opened the door quietly & had tiptoed to his room. He felt strange when he found the lights to his room on. He just kept his luggage aside & was about to open the bathroom door, when the door automatically opened & he stood rooted on his spot.

Seeing a girl wrapped only in a towel, his heart had stopped beating altogether. And without seeing ahead, the girl had collided with him & lost her balance. To protect her from falling, he had instantly pulled her towards him. She had clung to him in fear, scared to fall down. But he was lost, lost in the moment, feeling a soft body clinging to him with her eyes closed.

He didn't move for the next few minutes. He was taking in her appearance. Her hair wrapped in a towel. Some beads of water still clung to her face & neck. Her perfectly arched eyebrows, long black eyelashes, her cute nose. The next sight caught his attention too much, her naturally pink rosy lips. He had a sudden urge to taste them.

He controlled his reactions & his eyes moved downwards against his wishes & saw another towel wrapped around her fragile soft body. He saw the fair silky skin that was exposed for him to see. He closed his eyes to control himself again or else he would regret moving his hands on her.

When he opened his eyes, his world stopped. She had opened her eyes too & was looking at him straight in his eyes. He had never seen such beautiful doe shaped eyes in his life. Her hazel brown eyes shone under the lights. He wanted to drown in them forever. Her hands on its own held him more firmly. The close proximity playing havoc in both of their minds.

The birds chirping outside his window broke their intense moment. He cleared his throat & spoke, "Tum... tum kaun ho? Aur mere kamre mein kya kar rahi ho?" She lowered her eyes & stammered, "Wohhh... Wohhh... Mere bathroom mein nal kharab ho gaya tha, aur mujhe jaldi taiyaar bhi hona tha, isliye main yahaan aa gayi."

He was loving his effect on her, "Accha... Toh itne bade ghar mein tumhe sirf mera hi kamra mila nahaane ke liye?" She looked away from his intense gaze, biting her lower lip & stuttered again, "Wohhh... wohhh... yahi mere bagal wala kamra tha. Isliye... isliye maine jyada socha nahi aur yahaan... yahaan aa gayi."

If her voice on the call had sounded soothing for him, now it sounded sexy which was the effect of seeing her half naked. Both of them were still in each other's arms, not wanting to part away. The knock on his door made them aware of their position & they separated instantly. Both of them breathed heavily. Sameer gestured her to go inside the bathroom again & she slowly moved away.

Taking a deep breath, he opened the door to see his Nanu standing in front of him. Before Nanu could take a step inside, Sameer moved outside on an impulse. He knew he can't allow Nanu to enter his room right now. He was too afraid of the consequences.

"Chaliye na Nanu. Neeche chalte hai. Mujhe na... mujhe naa... haan... chai peeni hai. Chaliye neeche jaakar hum Ramdhari ke haathon ki bani mast chai pee lete hai. Ekdum fresh ho jaayenge." Nanu didn't know what was wrong with his grandson. He kept his hand on Sameer's forehead to check his temperature.

"Teri tabiyat toh thik hai na Sameer? Yeh kya subah subah badbada raha hai. Aur tu kabse chai peene laga? Teen hafte kya London mein raha, apni saari addatein bhool gaya tu?" Despite trying to look confident, Sameer stuttered, "Nahi... nahi... main toh yeh keh raha tha ki aap chai pee lena aur main coffee pee lunga. Haaan... haann... yahi kehna chaahta tha main."

"Thik hai chal neeche." Nanu was confused with his behavior & turned to walk downstairs. Sameer spoke hesitantly, "Nanu... aap neeche chaliye. Main na zara fresh hokar aata hun." He nodded & walked ahead mumbling to himself, "Pataa nahi isse subah subah kya ho gaya hai? Kaisi paagalon jaisi harkatein kar raha hai."

Sameer sighed in relief & opened the door to his room after making sure that Nanu had reached downstairs. "Tum baahar aa sakti ho.", he spoke softly making sure that his voice wasn't loud enough for anyone else to hear apart from them.

The door opened slowly & she walked out nervously. He saw her fidgeting with the ends of the towel. It was a very big struggle for him to control himself & keep his focus on her face only. "Main... main... chalti hun. Aur... I'm sorry.", she mumbled softly. She was about to open the door, when he spoke, "Ruko... Mujhe dekhne do. Koi baahar toh nahi hai na. Wait here."

He opened the door & looked around. On finding no one there, he moved out first & then asked her come out. Once out of his room, she didn't even try to glance at him & ran towards her room. Sameer stood there with a smile on his face. No morning was as beautiful as this.

He went back to his room & found a towel on the floor. He picked it up & took in the fragrance. He realized that in her haste, the towel on her head had slipped & fallen down here. He again took in the fragrance of her shampooed hair & ruffled his hair, "Nanu sach hi keh rahe the. Paagal hi ho gaya hun main."

On the other side, Naina got back to her room & sat in front of the dressing table. She took in her appearance. Ohhh God... she was in his arms in just a towel. She covered her face with her palms. And then she realized that the towel which was wrapped around her head was missing. She looked closely in the mirror again. Her face was glowing today & a natural blush adorned her cheeks.

She got ready in a superfast speed & left her room. As she passed his room, she heard him singing some tune. She blushed as she remembered the way he had looked at her. She fastened her steps & reached the kitchen downstairs. Soon, she took over the task of making breakfast. Ramdhari informed her about Sameer's arrival & asked her to make coffee for him. He mumbled, "Main jab bhi coffee banata hun, unhe acchi hi nahi lagti. Hamesha kuch na kuch kami nikaalte hi rehte hai. Aaj aap hi banaa dijiye coffee. Main nahi banaunga."

She laughed at his antics & took over the task of making coffee for him. It was after half an hour that Sameer joined his Nanu at the dining table for breakfast. Nanu was reading the newspaper as always & sipping his favorite tea. The aroma of coffee filled the house & he hollered, "Ramdhari... Jaldi se coffee la. Itni mast smell aa rahi hai na coffee ki, ki ab raha nahi jaa raha... Ramdhari..."

Nanu looked at him with raised eyebrows, "Chilla kyun raha hai? Aa jaayegi teri coffee. Aaj aaya hai tab se ajeeb-o-gareeb harkatein kar raha hai." He just smiled in response & thought to himself, "Kaise aur kya bataun Nanu? Subah se kya kya hua hai." Within the next five minutes, Ramdhari placed the cup of coffee in front of him & stood there to hear what complaints he had for it today.

Sameer for the first time in his life smelled the coffee first & then took a sip. Ramdhari was still standing there & was observing the expressions on his face. Sameer took another sip & almost groaned aloud. Nanu kept the newspaper away & observed his grandson's expressions.

"Waaahhhh Ramdhari... Kya coffee banayi hai aaj tune. Mann kar raha hai ki tumhare haath choom lun." As soon as the words were out, Ramdhari stepped far away from him & spoke, "Hey bhagwaan... Aap thik toh hai na? Kya bole jaa rahe hai? Waise bhi agar haath choomne hi hai toh Naina didi ke choomo, kyunki coffee unhone banaayi hai, humne nahi."

There was pin drop silence after Ramdhari spoke aloud. Nanu tried to control his laughter whereas Sameer didn't know how to react after knowing that this favorite coffee was made by Naina. Ramdhari just sauntered off before Sameer could comment something more.

In the kitchen, Naina had heard the entire conversation & had turned beetroot red in a span of seconds. She actually imagined how it would feel if he kissed her hands. She instantly closed her eyes & pushed the thoughts away, when she saw Ramdhari back in the kitchen. She continued making the breakfast.

After ten minutes, Ramdhari was back with a casserole & bowl of curd. He placed the plates in front of Nanu & Sameer & went back to the kitchen. Naina took slow steps towards the dining table knowing very well that it was time to face HIM again. As soon as she was out, Nanu called out, "Arey Naina... Itna dheere dheere kyun chal rahi ho? Jaldi aao aur hume naashta paros do. Bohot bhook lagi hai."

Sameer took a deep breath taking in her fruity fragrance as she reached the table. She opened the casserole & placed two parathas on Nanu's plate & filled a small bowl of curd for him. She turned towards Sameer & their eyes met again. The butterflies in their stomachs were back. Her hand trembled while serving him the parathas & curd. She sat next to Nanu & served herself.

All the while, Sameer's eyes didn't leave her. She was dressed in a light pink long georgette kurti which was paired with white leggings. Her hair was tied in a messy bun. Few tendrils had escaped the bun & were freely flowing on her face. Once in a while, she would tuck those stubborn tendrils behind her ear & resume eating.

Nanu had seen the exchange & was happy seeing the pink tinge on both of their cheeks. This was a great start. He was now planning how to inform them about the promise. That was going to be tough. But he had to do it someday. He thought of waiting for the right moment & then he would carefully broach the topic.

Once the breakfast was done, Nanu introduced them when they got comfortable in the living room. "Sameer... Yeh hai Naina. Mere sabse azeez dost, Jayantilal Parekh ki naati. Aur Naina yeh hai mera natkhat naati Sameer." They both acknowledged each other with a smile. No words came out of their mouths as the scene from the morning kept flashing in their minds.

"Hey Sameer... Tu aa gaya?" Nanu's favorite Rahu-Ketu arrived stopping Nanu from speaking his next words. He just wanted to tell his grandson that Naina would be staying here with them from now onwards. Sameer got up to hug his best friends, "Tum dono subah subah kya kar rahe ho yahaan? Aaj Sunday hai na? Aaj ka ek din ghar par nahi raha gaya tum dono se?", he teased his friends.

They smirked & continued the teasing, "Ab tere bina hamara mann nahi lagta na. Jab tak teri aisi gheesi peeti baatein na sunn le, hume khaana bhi nahi pachta. Kyun Chenu? Main sahi keh raha hun na?" Munna laughed & continued, "Haan bilkul. Ab tu gaya hai na toh hamare sar se thoda kaam bhi kam ho jaayega. Thak gaye hai itna kaam karte karte."

He turned to Nanu, "Nanaji... Ab se aap Sameer ko kahin jaane mat dena. Khud toh chala jaata hai yahaan se itna saara kaam dekar, aur fir wahaan jaakar bhi hume yahaan chain se jeene nahi deta." Nanu started laughing as he was used to their banters.

Naina was looking at them with amusement. She never had such friends with whom she had ever talked so freely or teased them. Infact, the people in her school & college only sought her help during exams when they were in need of readymade notes. Being a kind hearted person, she always helped others, even if they didn't treat her properly.

Her thought process broke with Samundit's laughter. A sweet smile bloomed on her face watching them chatting happily. She was about to move towards the kitchen, when Pandit called, "Naina... Kaisi ho tum?" She stopped in her tracks. She hadn't expected this at all. Yesss. The duo visited the house daily after their introductions but they never tried conversing with her.

So, what was special today? She turned to them, "Main thik hun. Aap kaise hai?" Pandit looked here & there & she stood confused. "Naina... Yeh aap mat kaho naa. Ekdum se uncle waali feeling aa jaati hai. Please tum chalega." Munna & Sameer chuckled, "Naina. Tu na mujhe tum bol lena par iss Ponga ko aap hi kehna. Waise bhi umar hoti jaa rahi hai, uncle types hi ho gaya hai..."

Pandit glared at him & turned to her with puppy eyes. Naina finally laughed out making Sameer skip his heartbeats. He was again lost in her. He hadn't seen her laugh so freely since morning. She had just smiled a while ago, when Nanu had made the introductions. He was seeing a lot of her expressions today. First, her scared face, then her nervousness, then her smile & now her laugh. Everything about her was mesmerizing him & drawing him towards her.

She felt Sameer's gaze on her that affected her too much & she looked away instantly. His speechless expressions didn't escape the eyes of the others. "Main thik hun. Tum dono kaise ho? Ab thik hai?", her voice broke Sameer's trance & he realized that all the set of eyes were focused on him.

He lowered his eyes in embarrassment. Pandit replied, "Main bhi mast." Munna continued, "Aur main bhi badhiyaa hun." "Tum dono kuch khaaoge?", her voice made Sameer look up at her. No one had ever asked them about their preferences. Even Mundit hadn't expected that. They looked at her & grinned, "Naina... Bohot bhook lagi hai. Kuch khaane ko milega kya abhi?", Pandit said rubbing his stomach.

Nanu was impressed with the way Naina was making her place in the house. She was now comfortable with his Rahu-Ketu but then he noticed that his grandson hadn't uttered a single word to her since he was here. What was going on in his mind? He saw him sneaking glances of her every now & then. But he wasn't talking & that was the main problem.

"Maine aloo ke parathe banaaye hai. Khaoge?", she asked them & they looked at Sameer. "Naina... Kya baat hai? Aaj tumne Sameer ke favorite aloo ke parathe banaaye hain? Ab toh khaana hi padega. Jaldi lao, ab mujhse aur bhooka nahi raha jaayega. Chuhe dance kar rahe hai pet mein...", Pandit again rubbed his stomach. Naina chuckled, "Main abhi laayi. Acha chai loge ya coffee?", she asked again. They shouted together, "Coffee..."

She was about to turn, when Nanu said, "Mere liye bhi chai laana." She kept her hands on her hips & said, "Bilkul bhi nahi. Aap already subah se do baar chai pee chuke hai. Jyada chai sehat ke liye acchi nahi hoti. Main aapke liye doodh laati hun. Aur aapko wohi peena padega."

She left to the kitchen & Samundit looked at Nanu with round eyes. "Tum teeno aise kya ghoor rahe ho mujhe?" "Nahin... Hum toh dekh rahe hai ki kaise Naina ne aapki bolti band kar di.", saying that they started laughing loudly. She was back within ten minutes with fresh aloo parathas & served Mundit. The three cups of coffee were placed in front of them & a glass of milk was handed to her grumpy Nanaji who was grumbling to himself, "Baccha thodi hun. Ab iss umar mein doodh kaun peeta hai?"

Sameer was surprised that she had made coffee for him too. He had loved the aloo parathas too but didn't appreciate it. He was so tempted to eat again that he couldn't resist anymore & served himself. Nanu along with Mundit saw that & just grinned in response. Naina too had seen the scene from afar & smiled unknowingly. The trio relished the parathas & the casserole was empty within minutes.

Ramdhari came back to pick up the empty plates & casserole. Naina too came back & joined them. "Naina... humne itne tasty parathe kabhi nahi khaaye aur coffee bhi bohot mast thi, ekdum strong, bilkul waisi hi jaisi Sameer ko pasand hai.", Pandit said jovially. Naina bit her inner cheek to stop herself from smiling in front of them. She just murmured a soft, "Thank you.", whereas Sameer sat there quietly observing her actions since morning.

All the three continued sitting in the living room discussing about the deal in London. Even Nanu heard the conversation & was happy seeing his grandson working so efficiently with his friends. Mundit left after an hour bidding their goodbyes to Naina too.

Naina was overwhelmed with different emotions today. So many things had happened since morning. Since Sameer's arrival, her equation with his friends was changing too & she was happy with this change. She had never made friends before & now she wanted to. Sameer hadn't spoken a word to her since they had collided in his room.

Once in her room, she thought to herself, "Pataa nahi mere baare mein kya soch rahe honge wohhh? Sochenge kaisi ladki hai, zara bhi sharam nahi hai. Main bhi na sach mein paagal hi hun, aise kaise kapde le jaana bhool gayi. Par mujhe kya pataa tha ki wohh aaj hi aa jayenge. Agar pataa hota toh main unke room mein jaati hi nahi na." She kept talking to herself, unknown of the fact that the door to her room was open & the mentioned guy was hearing her whole self-talk.

Sameer was going to the study as Nanu had called him there to talk something important. On the way, he heard her voice & stopped to listen to her mumblings. He almost smiled hearing all of that. Shaking his head, he walked towards the study.

Nanu was already waiting for him. He sat in front of Nanu & asked, "Kahiye Nanu? Aap kya important baat karna chaahte hai?" He glanced towards the door to see Naina walking in. Why was she here?

Naina fidgeted a little before sitting next to Nanu. He looked at both of them & spoke, "Mujhe tum dono se important baat karni hai. Aur ab main jo bataane ja raha hun, usse shanti se sunna. Thik hai?" They nodded & he started speaking with a hope that they would help him in fulfilling the promise.

Hello everyone...

I'm back with the next chapter...

I'm very much sorry for so much delay in updating this...

FATE TWISTED BY LOVE

CHAPTER 3

"Mujhe tum dono se important baat karni hai. Aur ab main jo bataane ja raha hun, usse shanti se sunna. Thik hai?" Sameer saw the nervousness on his grandfather's face & he knew that something major was going to happen. He knew his Nanu enough that he can gauge from his facial expressions that something important was going to be conversed today. On the other side, Naina grew nervous too thinking that why was she a part of their personal conversation.

Nanu drank a glass of water before speaking. He wasn't sure of the outcome, but he had to do it. It was now or never for him. "Sameer... Naina... Main abhi jo bhi kahunga isse tum dono ki zindagi mein bohot badaa badlaav hoga toh meri baat shanti se sunn lena pehle. Uske baad hi tum dono apna jawaab dena. Thik hai." They both looked at each other & then nodded whilst Nanu saw the silent exchange & mentally prepared himself for the inevitable.

"Main aur Jayantilal Parekh bachpan se bohot acche dost the. School aur college mein bhi hum saath hi padhe the. College khatam hone ke baad, Jayanti Baroda chala gaya. Uske Chachaji ne uske liye wahaan kaam dhoond rakha tha. Maine yahaan Bapuji ke saath apni dukaan mein kaam shuru kar diya. Thode saal baad, Jayanti aur meri shaadi ki baat chali. Aur hamare naseeb tab bhi saath hi rahe. Hamari shaadi bhi do best friends se hi hui, Jayanti ki shaadi Sharda se aur meri uski khaas dost, Jaanki se hui.

Jayanti apni patni ko lekar Baroda chala gaya aur hum yahin Ahmedabad mein rahe. Hamari zindagi acchi chal rahi thi. Do saal baad, Jayanti aur Sharda ko ek beti hui, Rama aur hume bhi bhagwaan ke ashirwaad se ek beti hui, Vishakha. Rama aur Vishakha hamari hi tarah acchi dost bani gayi thi.

Kabhi kabhi Jayanti uske parivaar ke saath yahaan aata aur kabhi hum wahaan chale jaate the. Bacche bade hone lage aur fir hum apni grahasthi mein itna vyast ho gaye ki dheere dheere milna julna kamm hone lagaa. Pehle hum har mahine milte the par fir wohh kamm hote hote saal mein ek baar hone lagaa. Hume isse koi shikaayat nahi thi kyunki hum jaante the ki kaam kaaj aur bacchon ki padhai bohot important thi.

Main aur Jayanti chahte the ki hamari dosti rishtedaari mein badal jaaye. Par aisa nahi ho sakta tha, kyunki hum dono ko betiyaan hi hui thi. College khatam hote hi Rama ko Rakesh pasand aa gaya aur usne yeh baat humko bataayi. Ussi darmiyaan, Vishakha ko bhi Vivek se pyaar ho gaya. Dono bacchon ne hamare aashirwaad se shaadi kar li. Rama Rakesh ke saath bohot khush thi aur fir chaar saal baad unhe Naina hui."

Nanu caressed her head lovingly with misty eyes. Naina had heard about her parent's love marriage from her Nanaji many times. Nanu controlled his tears & continued, "Par Vishakha ki zindagi mein kuch bhi thik nahi tha. Mujhe Vivek zara bhi pasand nahi tha. Maine Vishakha ko samjhaaya bhi par wohh nahi maani. Aur mujhe majboori mein dono ki shaadi karvaani padi. Shaadi ke baad wohh apne pati ke saath Surat rehne chali gayi thi. Ek saal baad unki zindagi mein Sameer aaya. Vishakha mujhe har hafte phone kiya karti thi. Maine kayi baar usse kahaa ki wohh Sameer ko lekar yahaan aa jaaye. Par wohh maani nahi. Saat saal baad, ek din achanak wohh Sameer ke saath yahaan aa gayi. Uske baad maine apni beti ko kabhi nahi dekha."

The tears didn't stop this time. All the three cried silently remembering their pasts. Nanu neither revealed anything about Naina's parent's death not did he mention anything about Sameer's parent's differences. He deliberately skipped that part as he wanted both of them to open up to each other, heal each other's wounds. Whatever lied in their pasts were their stories to tell, not his.

He continued, "Naina... Sameer... Tum dono kabhi nahi mile the. Par maine aur Jayanti ne ek vaada kar liya tha ek dusre se." Nanu took a deep breath & said finally, hoping that these kids would agree to their promise, "Maine aur Jayanti ne vaada kiya tha ki jab Sameer pachees saal ka ho jaayega tab hum uski shaadi Naina se karvayenge aur hamari dosti rishtedaari mein badal jaayegi. Aur ab main chahta hun ki tum dono ki shaadi ho jaaye." There he had said it loud & clear.

Nanu was more anxious now as none of them responded or reacted. Both were seated calmly with their tear-stained faces. He didn't understand what they were thinking. Finally, after waiting for five long minutes, he couldn't bear their silence. So, he asked, "Sameer... Kuch toh bolo?" He turned to Naina as well, "Naina... Tum bhi bol sakti ho ab." Still, he was greeted with silence.

"Mujhe sochne ke liye time chahiye Nanu.", saying this, Sameer left the study room. Naina was still sitting there with tears in her eyes. Nanu sat next to her, "Kya soch rahi ho tum, Naina?" She looked at him, "Nanaji... Aapne Sameer ko yeh kyun nahi bataaya ki main anaath hun? Aur kya aap mere Nanaji se yahi vaade ki baat kar rahe the hospital mein?"

He nodded, "Haannn... Yahi vaade ki baat kar rahe the hum. Aur tum anaath nahi ho Naina. Main hun na, tumhara Nanaji... Aage se kabhi khud ko anaath mat kehna. Samjhi. Tum dono ko apni peechli zindagi ke baare mein khudse kehna hoga, isliye maine kuch nahi kahaa." She just nodded but still fidgeted with the corner of her dress.

"Kya tum mere Sameer se shaadi karne ke liye taiyaar ho Naina?", he finally asked as it was getting too much. She looked at him, "Nanaji... Ek dusre ko jaane bina hum kaise shaadi kar sakte hai? Hum aaj hi toh mile hai. Ek din mein yeh faisla lena sahi nahi hoga." She closed her eyes & continued, "Main iss shaadi ka faisla Sameer par chodti hun Nanaji." She got up & left.

Nanu remained seated there as many thoughts crossed his mind. He questioned himself, "Kya maine aaj hi yeh baat bataa kar koi galti toh nahi kar di? Mujhe thode din aur rukna chahiye tha kya? Kahin dono ki zindagi mein koi aur toh nahi? Nahi... nahi... Aisa nahi ho sakta, aur agar aisa hota toh mujhe pataa hota. Sameer aur Naina me kabhi aisa kuch nahi kahaa."

Nanu didn't know if he had made the right decision by discussing his promise so early. But what can he do now? He just had to wait & let them take the call. He was worried now, especially because of Sameer's silence. He didn't say anything except he wanted time to think. Nanu knew his grandson & was now getting apprehensive.

It was time for lunch, when he saw Naina placing the dishes on the table. He asked Ramdhari to call Sameer. He arrived at the table & ate his lunch talking to Nanu about some meeting which needed his presence too. Nanu agreed immediately & was happy to see that he wasn't in a sour mood after whatever happened in the study room. He wanted to broach the topic but waited as he wanted to talk to him in Naina's absence.

Naina remained silent & distracted throughout. She didn't even eat properly. Nanu thought that even she was as anxious as him. They finished their lunch & Nanu informed that he would be visiting Munshiji's house in the evening for some work & would be back before dinner. Everyone retired to their rooms.

Once in the room, Naina sat down on her study table. She wanted to study but nothing registered in her mind as it was already distracted with HIS thoughts. She closed the book & kept it away with a thud. She got up & started pacing around her room. After few minutes, she lied down on the bed & thought, "Nanaji ne jo bhi kahaa, usse sunne ke baad mera dil itne zor se kyun dhadakne laga tha? Kya main Sameer se shaadi karne ke liye ready hun? Agar uski zindagi mein koi aur ladki hogi toh? Main kisi ke pyaar ke beech nahi aana chahti. Mujhe usse baat karni padegi. Ye faisla main akeli nahi le sakti. Waise bhi maine Nanaji ko yahi kahaa tha ki Sameer ka jo bhi faisla hoga wohhh mujhe manzoor hoga."

The moment she thought that Sameer would have some girl in his life, her heart ached without her knowledge. She smiled to herself remembering the morning encounter in HIS room. He had asked her, "Itne bade ghar mein tumhe sirf mera hi kamra mila nahaane ke liye?" She had very smartly replied, "Yahi mere bagal wala kamra tha. Isliye maine jyada socha nahi aur yahaan aa gayi."

This was the half-truth. She couldn't tell him that she liked coming to his room & talk to his picture. She had been in his room every day. She used to clean his room & then sit in front of his picture & talk about all the mundane things. She had started to feel this house as her own & his room as her own too. She knew she was attracted to him & that's the reason she wanted to know about him even more.

Neither Nanu nor Ramdhari knew that she spent her all afternoons in HIS room. This was her little secret that she never wanted anyone to know. Today, when Nanu talked about their marriage, she didn't believe it at all. She never thought in her dreams that she would be asked to marry him. She wanted to talk to Sameer & check if he had someone else in his life. Nanaji never mentioned about it, maybe he must not be aware about it, she thought & then a frown appeared on her face, "Agar Sameer ki koi girlfriend hogi toh hum dono ke Nanaji ka vaada kaise poora hoga?"

She kept tossing & turning on her bed. Sleep was far away from her that afternoon. She got hold of her diary & started writing. She had a habit of writing whenever she could. That day her mind & heart were at war & she needed to get it out. Writing gave her solace & today she needed it the most.

"Hiii... Dairy... Bohot din ho gaye na hume baat kiye hue. Aaj bohot se sawaal hai mann mein. Itne din se main yahaan hun par Nanaji ne kabhi iss vaade ka zikr nahi kiya mujhse. Shaayad wohh Sameer ke aane ka intezaar kar rahe the. Tum jaante ho hamare Nanaji ne kya vaada kiya tha? Main bataati hun, wohh chahte hai ki meri aur Sameer ki shaadi ho jaaye. Mujhe aisa lag raha hai jaise main koi sapna dekh rahi hun.

Tum toh jaante ho na ki mujhe Sameer pehli jhalak mein hi pasand aa gaya tha, isliye jab Nanaji ne yeh sab bataaya toh mera mann khushi se naach utha. Par iss khushi ke saath saath ek darr bhi hai.

Par taarif ke do shabd bhi nahi kahe. Khair mujhe toh pataa bhi nahi tha ki unhe aloo ke parathe pasand hai, wohh toh Pandit ne bataaya tab mujhe pataa chalaa.

Ab pataa nahi unke dimaag mein kya chal rahaa hoga. Diary... Tumne hamesha meri baat suni hai aur mujhe pataa hai tum aage bhi sunogi. Dusron ki tarah tum mujhe kabhi nahi chodogi na? Pehle mummy-papa ka jaana fir mere Nanaji ka. Tumne har samay mera saath diya hai. Bas aage bhi aise hi dete rehna. Jaanti hun, tumhare siva mera koi friend nahi hai jo meri har baat sunega...

Abhi ke liye chalti hun... Baad mein bataungi aage kya kya hua...

Byeee... Jaldi milenge..."

The time passed soon for her.

When she came down, Ramdhari informed her that Nanaji had already left towards Munshiji's house. He added again, "Main bhi market jaa raha hun. Aapko kuch chahiye toh bataa dijiye. Main le aaunga." She replied with a smile, "Mujhe kuch nahi chahiye Bhaiya. Bas jo saamaan ki list banaayi thi, ussi hisaab se sab le aaiyega." He too left for the market.

She thought that she was alone in the house until she heard a throat clearing behind her. She turned swiftly & her eyes met the deep brown chocolaty eyes. He asked, "Mujhe tumse baat karni hai. Mere kamre mein aa sakti ho?" She nodded in a trance & followed him.

The moment she entered his room, her eyes landed on the bathroom door & she got all the flashbacks of the morning. She instantly looked away, when he spoke, "Naina... Tumhe pataa hoga ki maine tumhe yahaan kya baat karne bulaaya hai.", he came straight to the point. She replied nervously, "Wohhh... Wohhh... Main bhi aapse baat karna chahti hun."

He continued, "Toh pehle tum bolo. Kya bolna chahti ho tum?" She fidgeted with her dress & asked, "Ummmm... Kya aapke koi girlfriend hai?" He looked at her blankly, "Usse kya fark padta hai?" She was still fidgeting with her dress, "Fark toh padega na? Agar aapki zindagi mein koi aur hoga toh hamare Nanaji ne kiya hua vaada kaise poora hoga? Aur main nahi chaahti ki main kisi ke pyaar ke beech mein aaun."

Sameer kept looking at her with a straight face. "Aap... aap kuch bol kyun nahi rahe?" He took a step ahead whereas she didn't move. She was waiting for his answer. He started clapping suddenly. She stood confused & asked, "Aap... aap taaliyaan kyun bajaa rahe ho?" He moved around her in circle, still clapping loudly.

He stopped moving & stood in front of her, "Waahhh... Naina... Waaahhhh... Kya acting kar leti ho yaar tum. Maanna padega." He clapped again. "Yehh... yeh... aap kya keh rahe hai?", she stuttered. He laughed aloud, "Itni bholi shakal hai tumhari, koi bhi isse dekh kar pighal jaayega? Jaise mere Nanu pighal gaye." She was unable to understand why he was saying such things.

He continued, "Tum aaj subah jaan bujhkar aayi na mere kamre mein. Nal kharaab hona, fir mere kamre mein nahaane aana, yeh sab tumhara plan tha na mujhe fasaane ka? Tumhe yeh sab vaade ke baare mein pehle se pataa tha na??? Fir yeh sab naatak kyun kiya? Tumhe kya lagaa ki tum mere saamne towel mein aa jaaogi aur main tumhare pyaar mein paagal ho jaunga? Tumne jaan bujhkar mera favourite naashta banaaya, jisse tum mujhe impress kar sako. Mere doston se bhi isiliye acche se baat kar rahi thi na taaki mere saamne tumhara character accha banaa rahe. Miss Naina Agarwal... Maine tum jaisi bohot ladkiyan dekhi hai, jo aisi sab giri hui harkatein karke paisewaale ladkon ko fasaa leti hai."

"Nanu chahte hai ki hamari shaadi ho, unhone vaada jo kiya tha tumhare Nanaji se. Mujhse shaadi hone ke baad tumhari toh chaandi hi chaandi ho jaayegi na? Tumne kabhi sapne mein bhi nahi socha hoga na ki tumhari kismat aise chamak jaayegi. Tumne kabhi tumhare zindagi mein itna badaa ghar nahi dekha hoga. Hai na???"

Naina stood frozen to her place after hearing such toxic words for her. No one had ever spoken in such a harsh way with her. She couldn't believe her ears that the person she was falling for, thought about her in such a horrendous way. She never knew about the promise as her Nanaji had never spoken about it before. She came to know only when her Nanaji was on death bed, that too only about the promise, not the promise itself.

Her thoughts broke when he pulled her in his arms & tried to kiss her. That was it. She couldn't take anymore & pushed him away with all the strength she had. Sameer stumbled back a little & then his cheek felt numb when she slapped him hard on his right one. He stood rooted to his place, "How dare you Naina???"

Before Sameer could say more, she shouted, "How dare you Mr Sameer Maheshwari? Tumhari himmat kaise hui mujhe kiss karne ki. Samajte kya ho tum mujhe huh? Tum hoge koi bade CEO kisi company ke. Par usse mujhe koi fark nahi padta. Kya kahaa tumne? Ki main tumhe impress karne ke liye aur fasaane ke liye subah se naatak kar rahi hun. Toh Mr Sameer Maheshwari, apne kaan khol kar sunlo, main koi naatak nahi kar rahi hun. Main jaisi hun, waisi hi khush hun. Tumhare paison se yaa iss bade ghar se mujhe kuch lena dena nahi hai. Main toh sirf Nanaji ke wajah se iss ghar mein hun. Tumhare liye nahi, samjhe tum? Aur yeh jo ghamand hai na tumhe apne paison ka, wohh tum usse dikhao jise isse koi fark padta ho, mujhe nahi."

"Aur kya kahaa tumne, ki tumne bohot ladkiyaan dekhi hai jo tumhare paison ki wajah se tumhare aas paas mandaraati hai. Toh Mr Sameer Maheshwari, main unn ladkyon mein se nahi hun. Naa toh mujhe tumhare paison mein interest hai, naa toh tumhari shakal mein aur naa hi tum mein. Toh khud ko itna importance mat do. Aur rahi shaadi ki baat, toh mujhe tum jaise selfish, narrow minded & self-centered insaan mein koi interest nahi hai. Aur agar iske baad tum mere aas paas bhi dikhe na toh accha nahi hoga tumhare liye. Samjhe..."

Saying that, she left his room, leaving a stunned Sameer behind. He couldn't believe that this girl had dared to slap him & speak to him in such an insulting way. No one had the courage to slap him till now & this girl had the nerve to do that. He paced around his room to calm himself but that didn't work out. He took his bike keys from the drawer & left his house.

He called up Munna & Pandit on the way & asked them to meet at the office. His friends didn't dare to ask the reason hearing his stern voice & agreed to meet. When they entered his cabin, they were surprised to see the storm that had hit their friend's cabin. All the things were scattered around, some vases were broken & all the chairs were upside down.

"Kaunsa toofaan aaya tha yahaan?", Pandit asked looking around the cabin. Munna stood near the door & was watching his friend who stood silently looking out of the window. Mundit walked across the room where he was standing & patted his back, "Sameer... Kya hua?" He turned around to face his friends. One look at their best friend & they knew something was terribly wrong.

Pandit made him sit on the couch & Munna handed him a glass of water. "Ab shanti se bataa ki baat kya hai?", Munna asked him. Taking a deep breath, Sameer told them everything from the start. He even told them about his conversation with Nanu before he left for London. They heard him quietly trying to understand all. Once he was done, he looked at them, "Uss ladki ki itni himmat ki usne mujhe thappad maara. How dare she? Wohh jaanti nahi hai ki usne kisse pangaa liya hai."

Mundit couldn't control their laughter & started laughing loudly. "Sameer... Kaunse gaal pe thappad maara, zaraa bataa toh?", Pandit came forward & looked at his face closely, "Arey iss gaal pe maara hai. Dekh Munna, kaisa laal ho rakkhaa hai gaal." Munna too came forward & observed, "Arey haann... Right gaal par hi maara hai."

They started laughing again & Sameer cursed under his breath. "Tum dono ko hasi aa rahi hai? Uss ladki ne mujhe thappad maara aur tum log hass rahe ho?" Mundit calmed down & looked at him, "Ab tune jo kiyaa, wohh bhi sahi nahi tha Sameer. Agar usne tujhe thappad maara bhi toh kuch galat nahi kiya usne. Main bhi agar uski jagah hota toh wohi karta.", Pandit spoke his mind this time.

Munna added, "Hum Naina ko kuch dino se itna toh jaan gaye hai ki usse samaj sake. Tu hamara bhai hai, khaas dost hai, bachpan se jaante hai tujhe. Aur tune abhi jo kuch bhi kahaa, uske baad hum yahi kahenge ki tune galat kiya Sameer. Tune uske character par sawaal uthaaya, uski marzi ke bina tune usse kiss karna chaaha. Hamara dost aisa toh nahi tha. Tujhe usse shaadi nahi karni toh saaf saaf manaa kar deta. Tujhe Naina ke saath aisa behave nahi karna chahiye tha. Tu gusse mein kuch jyada hi aage badh gaya Sameer. Wohh ek ladki hai, abhi abhi uske Nanaji ka dehant hua hai. Kitna sunti wohh bhi. Uski bhi toh self-respect hai na?"

Sameer couldn't believe that his own friends were siding with that girl. He turned to them, "Waaahhhhh... Tum dono mere dost ho yaa uske?" Pandit spoke, "Dost toh hum tumhare hi hai Sameer. Isiliye hum tujhe sahi aur galat ka fark dikha rahe hai." Sameer closed his eyes, "Nanu chahte hai ki hum unka vaada poora kare. Par main kisi gold digger se shaadi nahi kar sakta. Aur Naina se toh bilkul nahi. Kya kahaa tha usne ki wohh mujhse shaadi nahi karegi? Samajhti kya hai khud ko, kisi film ki heroine hai kya?" Mundit rolled their eyes while Sameer kept talking.

On the other side, after leaving his room, Naina had ran to her room & locked it. She cried her heart out holding her Nanaji's photo frame, "Aisa kaise soch sakte hai wohh mere baare mein. Chiii... Itni ghatiya harkat kaise kar sakta hai koi. Dikhne mein toh ekdum hero hai, par harkatein sab ekdum villain jaisi. Agar Nanu ko pataa chala ki unhone aisa kuch kiya mere saath toh unhe kitna dukh hoga. Kahaan main yeh soch rahi thi ki wohh itne acche hai aur kahaan unki aisi harkaton ne mera dil tod diya. Unhe lagta hai ki maine subah se jo kuch bhi kiya wohh jaan bujhkar kiya taaki main unhe fasaa saku. Unhe main itni giri hui dikhti hun. Accha hua maine Nanaji ko apna faisla nahi bola tab. Main aise bigdail ladke se kabhi shaadi nahi karungi. Kabhi nahi..."

Her heart broke into pieces after seeing his behavior today. She had never imagined that the handsome face she was falling for had such a cold heart. She cried bitterly after replaying the whole conversation in her mind again. She had to do something, she couldn't stay in this house now, where she would've to face him every day. She had at least done a right thing by not taking the decision for marriage instantly & left it to Sameer. She knew after whatever happened today, he wouldn't agree to marry her.

She only felt bad for Nanaji as she won't be able to fulfil their promise. She closed her eyes & let her tears flow. She never thought that she would have to leave this house too. Once he denied the marriage, she decided to talk to Nanaji & inform him that she couldn't stay here & would look out for a girl's hostel room. She freshened up after an hour & headed downstairs. She asked Ramdhari to prepare the dinner & she left to her room again to do her packing.

It was already dinner time when Sameer reached home. Nanu had returned from Munshiji's house an hour ago. He wanted to talk to Sameer alone but he didn't find him home when he returned. He asked Ramdhari, who said that he had no idea where he was gone. As Sameer entered, he saw Nanu sitting in the living room hearing songs on his favorite radio.

Ramdhari asked if he should serve dinner. Sameer went to freshen up & joined Nanu at the dining table. He hadn't seen Naina since his arrival. Nanu asked Ramdhari to call Naina for dinner, who hesitantly told them that she wasn't hungry & would not join them. He also told them that she had refused the evening tea & snacks too.

Ramdhari spoke, "Nanaji... Mujhe lagta hai Naina didi ko apne Nanaji ki yaad aa rahi hogi. Maine unke rone ki awaaz suni thi." The spoon fell from Sameer's hand & Nanu looked at him suspiciously. Ramdhari left to the kitchen after serving them. Sameer ate silently while Nanu looked skeptically at him. He somewhere guessed that his grandson was the reason behind Naina's absence from the dinner. He didn't say anything & they finished their meal.

"Ramdhari... Ek plate laaga de. Main khud Naina ko khaana de kar aata hun." Sameer too heard his Nanu's instruction. He kept quiet & saw Nanu walking towards Naina's room upstairs. He knocked on her door, "Naina... Beti... Main hun. Darwaaza kholo." She opened the door instantly, "Arey Nanaji... Aap kyun aaye, mujhe awaaz lagaa dete, main neeche aa jaati." He smiled & entered the room. He kept the plate on the side table & asked, "Tumhari tabiyat toh thik hai na? Dinner ke liye neeche kyun nahi aayi? Ramdhari keh raha tha ki tumne shaam ko chai aur naashta bhi nahi kiya. Sab thik hai na beti? Kuch hua hai kya?"

She didn't want to lie to him but she had to. She couldn't tell him what had transpired in his absence. She strengthened her heart & spoke, "Nanaji... Meri tabiyat thik hai, bas mujhe mere Nanaji ki yaad aa rahi thi. Aur kuch khaane ka mann nahi tha, isliye kuch khaaya nahi maine. Aap fikar mat kijiye Nanaji, main subah tak thik ho jaungi."

Nothing had escaped from Nanu's eyes. He had seen her red puffy eyes which meant that she had cried whole evening. He even saw her packed bags that were kept behind the study table. He understood that his grandson had definitely said something to her & she was ready to leave. He knew his grandson enough. This is what he was afraid of. He shouldn't have gone to Munshiji's place in the evening. Something drastic had happened between the two or else Naina wouldn't have packed her luggage. He needed to talk to his grandson now. He knew Sameer didn't want to marry & his promise would lead to his marriage which he never wanted in the first place.

"Naina... Dekho main khaana laaya hun. Thoda khaa lo. Bhookhe pet nahi sote. Chalo thoda sa hi sahi par kuch toh khaa lo." Nanu fed her a little & then left her room. He knew she won't say anything so he had to ask his grandson. When he went to keep the plate in the kitchen, he saw Sameer sitting in the garden. He walked towards him & sat beside him. They sat there in silence for few minutes.

"Sameer... Tumhe kuch kehna hai hamare promise ke baare mein? Tumne dophar se kuch nahi kahaa mujhse. Main jaanta hun ki tum shaadi nahi karna chahte. Par yahi sahi umar hai Sameer. Aur Naina bhi bohot acchi ladki hai. Uska dil ekdum saaf hai. Koi chal kapat nahi hai uske mann mein. Meri buddhi aankhon ne itna toh dekha hai ki logon ko parakh sakun. Naina se acchi jeevan saathi tumhe nahi mil sakti Sameer. Bohot pyaari bacchi hai. Mujhe yakeen hai ki wohh tumhe hamesha khush rakhegi. Naina mein maine apni Jaanki ki parchaayi dekhi hai. Main tumhe shaadi ke liye force nahi karunga. Bas ummeed kar sakta hun ki tum dono mera kiya hua vaada poora kar sako."

"Nanu... Wohhh... wohhh... main...", Sameer stuttered& before he could say anything, they heard a voice from behind, "Nanaji... Mujhemaaf kar dijiyega. Par main yeh shaadi nahi kar sakti..."
