Dev wanted his son to become a soccer player because he can't play football anymore because of his broken leg. Mahavir Phogat wanted his daughters to become wrestlers so that they could win a gold medal in Olympics, something which he could never do.

Both were strict fathers who wanted to live their unfulfilled dreams through their children, by forcing them into a career since their childhood, without giving them a choice. In the end of Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, Dev realized that he can't force his child to play soccer if he doesn't like it. Dev was shown as an awful person in the whole movie who could neither become a good husband nor a good father, but he at least realized the error of his ways in the end. Even though most people think that it was not enough and he should've suffered till eternity for his deeds.

Mahavir on the other hand, was glorified for forcing his daughters into wrestling because he's not like other parents in the village. He ain't getting his daughters married in childhood, which is a crime btw. He's a messiah for not committing a crime. But that's the thing. In our patriarchal society, men are always glorified for NOT committing atrocities on women. Because they have the power to do that, but they don't. So women should be grateful because these nice men are showing mercy on them.

It's another thing that Geeta and Babita ended up becoming good wrestlers who went on to become international level champions. Even Dev's son might've done well in Soccer if he continued playing. He was still a kid in the movie.

So tell me, how Mahavir Phogat in Dangal is any different from Dev in Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna ONLY as a father?

Dev was an absolute a**hole who had issues and needed treatment, he always used to taunt his son for acting like a girl, never appreciated him, shouted on him.....etc.

Whereas mahavir Phogat was a strict father who wanted his daughters to be wrestler. He never underestimated them "gold toh gold hove, chora laave ya chariya"

"Mhari choriya, choro se kam hai k"

And one more dialogue that they'll go to the grooms house and select them..... Something like that

Even though dev belonged to new age and was educated enough he didn't knew how to not make fun of a young boy and mahavir Phogat belonging to much older generation and  not much educated understood there is no girl/boy differentiation

So answer to your question is dev was the worst father, whatever mahavir did was for the betterment of his daughter but whatever Dev did was due to his ego

Mahavir Phogat made his daughters gold medalist. He never considered them less. He stood with them in a society where girls were married off as soon as possible. His strict discipline made them the stars they are.

Dev was a loser, who could not deal with his wife's success. He took that frustration on his poor kid. He went ahead even cheated on his wife.

Fathers like Mahavir Phogat are blessing and a pillar which every kid should have. Dads like Dev leave broken kids who further can get into abusive relationships.

Mahavir Phogat wanted her daughters to become wrestlers because he didn't have a son. He ended up having four daughters in the hope of having a son.

In the end, he decided to make her daughters wrestlers because he saw potential in them. But he was still forcing them in a career which they never wanted. He wanted to live his unfulfilled dreams through his daughters and parents like those are never good.

If Dev made fun of his kid then Mahavir also forced his daughters to cut their hair and never allowed them to play with dolls, or fulfill any other girly desires which they might had.

What made Dev better was that he realized his mistake but Mahavir didn't. In fact all his acts were glorified.

Mahavir Phogat is more worse than Dev!

Its difficult to sabotage one's career wishes and getting forced by parents to choose a career. Personal experience!

Those two girls could have become what they wanted in future. Its not compulsory to even make careers. These girls also wanted their small wishes such as behaving feminine, dressing like other girls to get fulfilled. But they were forced to adopt ways dictated by her father.

Dev was an assshole but mahaveer was a chauvinist. Usko ladke chahiye the, aur ladka na hua toh usne ladkiyo ko ladka bana diya. Koi empowering cheez nahi hai apne dreams bacchan pe thopna. Usey bas medal chahiye the. Ladka hota and agar uska wrestling me mann na bhi hota toh mahavir unhe jabardasti wrestler banaya hi banata.

Dev ke khudke apne complexes the. Tha toh woh bhi ghatiya hi

as I wrote in my previous post he was uneducated and belonged to that generation.

They may wanted to become a housewife or would join any other professions but they would have never reached the position they are today if he wasn't strict with them (every indian parent is)

I agree with you here but isn't this what most of the Indian parents do to their kids??? Can we call them worst too

Mahavir did those things coz they came as a distraction to them. I don't think he was a worst father but he wasn't the best either.

Dev was the worst father, son and also the worst husband

I remember this quote from kota factory

Maa baap k decisions shayad ghalat ho sakte hai lekin unki neeyat kabhi ghalat nahi hoti

I feel Dev

Because not only he tried to put his bitterness onto his son

but cheated and this kind of toxic environment is very worse

Phogat was ruthless but he did something that went far beyond his ego, he created an environment where women can be wrestlers even though his daughters suffered
