Graduation Ceremony
(Drabble)
Darling, don't be afraid,
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
Bondita rubbed through the velvet in her hand, adoring the ivory and gold texture it was laced with. Her saree was a definition of pounds of dollars kept together. It made her dizzy and a bit out of the brain. Looking that good was making her conscious. If Saudamini would have got it, for the first time in her life - she could have outnumbered her in carrying this.
"I don't see what big problem can this cause?" Anirudh tossed off one of his bow ties on the bed. He too didn't like big fussy clothes, but he wanted Bondita to wear something nice for her graduation ceremony. He could already picture his wife looking the best in the mid of those white-bread beauties.
"It can cause all the big problems in this world, Anirudh."Bondita started calling him with his maiden name 2 years ago on his insistence. Babu made him feel alienated.
"Sod off Bondita."Anirudh was annoyed. He angrily went past the room, reached his wife, and twirled her in a weird fashion.
"You seriously couldn't have bought something more beautiful than this, but still." Bondita trailed off, her head bowing down in embarrassment.
"You have better jobs, rather than getting upset on this stuff today. Imagine how everybody would feel, your mother is still singing some Bengali tune downstairs." Anirudh chided her, rubbing her nose.
"My mother sings it every time she makes Rossugullas," Bondita told him victoriously.
"The only difference is today she is making Mishti Doi," Bondita told Anirudh as he rushed through a canvas of dresses in his cupboard. Honestly, she hasn't seen him get ready like this any day. Not on his first court case.
"Why?" Anirudh asked her amused. He picked up two suits - a gray and a black one "Which one?" he asked bondita. Bondita rolled her eyes."The black one, my husband shines in it." she clasped her hands. Her heart skipped a beat when she saw him in his black lawyer robes. To be honest she thinks that she fell for him partly for his dress code too.
"You don't know how much I love you Anirudh." Bondita caged a tie around Anirudh's neck. "Mishti Doi, is just a sweet. I want everybody to have your favorite food today." She looked at the knot forming across his chest. Anirudh looked misty and numb for a second. " Hey, what happened?" he asked, even if he knew what has.
"You are such a good actor," Bondita said annoyed. "Making me cry before the ceremony is not a good idea." Anirudh chuckled, as he enclosed his palms over her working ones. "Who is gonna clap the hardest when finally you shall be Barrister Bondita Roy Chaudhary," Anirudh said all dreamy.
"you." bondita said, as she finally tightened the hold of the knot, forming a tie - an analogy with their bond- held close for years to come.
