Why is there so much faith in Gully Boy to win an Oscar?

I enjoyed the film. But is this film really Oscar worthy. There have been better hindi films made in the past.

Why are producers so pushy for this to win?

Its great that BW is putting the film out there in any way they can...But will all of that work?

Imo Uri was a better option for Oscars.

Gully Boy was okay, but it was not a masterpiece.

But GrumpyTheCat makes a point. That criteria is the same reason why Slumdog Millionaire won, even though the soundtrack was below average imo.

Because the West is simply curious and obsessed over the slums of India....I can't believe there are actual walking tours of Dharavi.😳

Slum Dog Millionaire wasn’t an Indian movie. It was a Hollywood movie about Indian slums. Gullyboy is a full on Indian production top to bottom. Its odds are not that good. Not hating but rather being realistic. European or South American movies always have a much better shot. Outside of that it’s either Middle East or East Asian films. I came across an article a couple of days ago that talked about how Zoya has close connections to people in Hollywood and how Ranveer and Alia have popularity in the U.S. and it was kind of baffling to me. From which perspective are these points accurate? If talking about NRIs or Caucasian Bollywood fans? Then maybe true. But your average American movie goer or even your average American filmmaker and producer are not aware of who Ranveer and Alia or probably even Zoya are. And the biggest hint that Gullyboy probably won’t get the nomination is the Golden Globes nominations. No Gullyboy in their list of nominations and GG are usually looked at as a precursor to Oscar nominations. Frankly I think the makers of Gullyboy are fully aware of this but it’s good PR to hype the movie as a potential Oscar nominee. It might get it recognition in other awards in Europe or Asia or it might get the movie or its stars the National Award in India.

Ultimately it’s a wait and see game. I don’t think it will get the nominations but we’ll see.

If it gets nominated then the egos of everyone involved with this will be so inflated that they might just combust.

Actually this part is true... Zoya does have connections in HW... Head of Amazon Studios Jennifer Salke (they are presenting GB for the Oscars) was in India for the premeire of Made in Heaven earlier this year. Ritesh hosted her. She is the protege of past Oscar nominee Mira Nair (director of Salaam Bombay), the costume designer of GB, Arjun Bhasin is a member of Academy and he was nominated for a Guild Award for A Beautiful Day In The Neighbourhood. Zoya herself is an Academey member... Nas is one of the executive producers of the film so that is a talking point for a lot of people in HW (have seen that question getting asked twice in Q and A sessions she did in LA for GB by Oscar voters)....I'm not saying the film will or it will get nominated but the people backing the film does have the clout and know the right people..oscar is all about lobbying and campaigning. The film is getting a lot of exposure and visibilty just based on the fact that Amazon Studios is presenting the film. The last time an Indian film got the attention of HW Studio was with Lunchbox.

It's the better choice.

It was chosen already.

It's gonna represent India to the oscars.

Lobbying started..

Hmm, I guess the question is are these enough connections to get the movie a nomination. I still don’t think it’s realistic. Bollywood is always hosting someone or another from Hollywood. Designers or stunt coordinators or VFX experts from Hollywood have been working in Bollywood more and more regularly in the past decade or so. Again, in my opinion none of these present a realistic shot for the movie. The Academy has over 8000 members at last count. Zoya herself being a member won’t make a difference. At this point it’s the movie’s extra exposure at different platforms in Europe or Asia that’s the biggest plus for it.

But nothing is impossible so we’ll see.
