Definitely because of the slums. Everyone's caught on how obsessed the whites are with Indian slums. Watching them gives them a hard on. Alas if they were only as obsessed with their own homeless and soul crushing ghettos public housing and soup kitchens, they might do some good.

Struggling to post a link but it is Parasite, Pain & Glory, The Traitor, Out Stealing Horses, The Whistlers, Les Miserables, Atlantics, And then we danced, Ne Zha, Weathering With You, The Boy who harnessed the wind, Mono.

It should have been Andhadhun. That was the best movie from Bollywood this year. Gully boy is enjoyable but highly overrewarded.

I don't think Gully Boy is at the same level than some of the other movies sent.

Hope next time India will give a chance to some other industries who might fetch them -if not an Oscar- a nomination.

Oscars aren't about what movie deserves to win, or what doesn't. It's like the American Presidential elections. It's about networking, publicity, propaganda, and positioning. Who spends what in creating buzz and how they manage to position it: that's all that matters.

Gully Boy is well-positioned. It has a certain level of hype. And, it has content that the Academy likes about India: slums and a marginalized community. It's also screened at Berlin, which is massively helpful.

If the Academy decides to nominate Gully Boy, it would also be to attract Indian audiences. The ratings have been dropping. They went so far ahead as to nominate Black Panther last year when they royally ignored the much superior Spiderman 2 and Dark Knight in the past. It was for 'woke' reasons and to attract MCU fans. White Panther wouldn't have been nominated.

Gully Boy's nomination would attract the Indian diaspora. Oscars need viewership. They don't lose anything by nominating Gully Boy. In fact, they will gain a penetration into the Indian diaspora as far as eyeballs go.

I feel Gully Boy has a legit chance to be nominated for reasons aforementioned.
