Hmm, I guess the question is are these enough connections to get the movie a nomination. I still don’t think it’s realistic. Bollywood is always hosting someone or another from Hollywood. Designers or stunt coordinators or VFX experts from Hollywood have been working in Bollywood more and more regularly in the past decade or so. Again, in my opinion none of these present a realistic shot for the movie. The Academy has over 8000 members at last count. Zoya herself being a member won’t make a difference. At this point it’s the movie’s extra exposure at different platforms in Europe or Asia that’s the biggest plus for it.
But nothing is impossible so we’ll see.
Very true.
but trust me it does not hurt AT ALL that Zoya is NOT ONLY a member but that she has a lot of directors' and actors' phone numbers and she can ask for their support.
Roma last year took away everything and - although it was a good movie- I felt it got over[praised and over -rewarded. And why was that? because the director was known in HW circles.
Lobbying is not as clean cut as some might think. There have to be viewing parties where certain HW people gather and watch the suggested movie.
The more people you know..or the more people you have some close relations with, the better the chance for the movie to be seen and appreciated by more Academy members.
It's a lot of pwerplay.
The international exposure on different platforms gives the credibility that the movie is appreciated in many markets.. but the HW lobbyist care more about having that face to face with the producers and directors and - let's not beat around the bush- about what advantages they get now or in the future. Something like: i vote for you, you vote for me when x, y, z happens.
Trust me HW lobbying is no cakewalk.... there's many names that get involved for any category.... and even omn the International movie nominations..if you look well inside the 'machine' you 'll find out who is connected with who, what other work the director has done.. and so on.. There are many factords that come into play.
Oh, and on topic:
... here's another thing:
Gully Boy producer Ritesh Sidhwani: Maybe we’ll get the Oscar this time
By: PTI | Mumbai | Updated: December 9, 2019 3:03:34 pm
Producer Ritesh Sidhwani said his team is trying “very hard” to give Gully Boy all the necessary push.
Producer Ritesh Sidhwani says the Gully Boy team is leaving no stone unturned to make sure the Ranveer Singh-starrer drama gets in the forefront at the Oscars race.
The film has been selected as India’s official entry in the International Feature Film category at the 92nd Academy Awards.
Sidhwani said the team is trying “very hard” to give Gully Boy all the necessary push.
” “We are trying to bring the film to the forefront. We are doing everything within our power to make sure we leave no stone unturned in bringing the film there. The first shortlist will come out on 15th December, so we’re waiting for that,Sidhwani told reporters.
“After that 10 out of 93 films will advance (in the best international film category). So hopefully, we’ll make it to the shortlist then maybe we’ll get the award this time. Maybe, it’ll be the first time for India, so fingers crossed,” he added.
Sidhwani was speaking at the red carpet of Star Screen Awards.

Oscars is all about lobbying campaigning and knowing the right people...I have read interviews of producers of past Oscar submission Vetrimaran, Rima Das, Marati film Court director. They all talked about how difficult it was for them to get oscar voters willing to come watch their film. They did not have the money for the marketing and lobbying campaigns nor knew the right people to push voters to come and watch the film to get people interested in the first place nor did they have US distributors/studios lobbying for them. Getting a HW studio to push for your film is a big boost to get Oscar voters interested to watch the film. (getting nominated is another thing). Everyone ask the question why Lagaan made it while others did not. The answer is simple, first they had the money second Aamir knew the right people...Lagaan was pushed by Sony Classic Picture pushed for an Oscar nomination. Even Lagaan did not have any prior Oscar buzz before the Oscar nomination in the International circuit. One Lorcerno Film Festival acclaim was all it had.
Here is an article on how Aamir and team Lagaan got the nom
https://m.rediff.com/movies/2002/mar/26man.htm
This one is also informative about the process.
Zoya did not just host head of Amazon Studio, Amazon Studio is presenting the film in the Oscars. That means they will be doing all the campaigning and lobbying for the film on behalf of Team GB. If you look at the past nominees and winners of the Foreign Film category almost all the films were pushed by major HW studios. Last years winner, Roma was presented by Netflix. The reason there was a big outcry when Lunchbox was snubbed by the Indian Selection Committee was along with all the international festival acclaim Sony Classic Pictures already agreed to campaign for the film if they get selected. Ritesh Batra in his anger towards the selection committee, got in to trouble for tweeting that the Oscar was in the bag for them because Sony Classic Picture promised them they will campaing for them.
As I said earlier I'm not saying that all of this will get them a nomination but atleast they are creating a buzz and visibility none of the other films in the recent times could not..nomination depend on the competition and how much the film was liked by the Oscar voters.
As you said lets see.
Korean movie parasite is winning that oscar , GB can be nominated at best

Parasite is awesome but has quite a bit of gore- and maybe many Academy members won't take to it.
And anyway, who knows who will win..
Lagaan was JUST nominated..it didn't win the Oscar, either.
So if GB gets nominated/ shortlisted then that 's a good thing !
The films that win Oscars even in main Categories are movies no one has heard of
It is not even gonna be nominated. The Golden Globe nominations are more or less going to be repeated at Oscars for foreign language, so the race is already over. It's gonna be Parasite, Farewell, Portrait of a lady on Fire, Pain & Glory, Les Miserables.
Parasite has been on lock for winning the award for months now.
Very little chances it is going to be nominated. For all its worth, it is another rags to riches story which has been done to death by all cinemas.
As others said, high chances Parasite is going to be the winner and will get plenty of nominations.

Imo Uri was a better option for Oscars.
Gully Boy was okay, but it was not a masterpiece.
But GrumpyTheCat makes a point. That criteria is the same reason why Slumdog Millionaire won, even though the soundtrack was below average imo.
Uri would never win..Oscar would never openly side with one of two feuding countries..
And Gully boy has slums
