In the Malabar regions of Kerala communism rose as a way to counter upper caste dominance. It is an ideology that resonates with the working class of Kerala. It may have "mass killings" like any other political ideology but don't reduce it to just that. 

As for the swag part Vijay D. could have looked at Nivin or DQ for some semblance of what it means to be a (any) party leader.

Just because it rose as a class war in Kerala does not undo the death of millions in USSR and China because of the very same ideology. Communism is more of a joke in India because Communists time and again indulge in religious symbolisms because they know atheism does not sell or win votes in India.
