If you're looking for a breezy love affair, no strings of acting attached, then I See U is a safe bet.
This desi version of the Reese Witherspoon, Mark Ruffalo-starrer Just Like Heaven has Arjun as London-based TV host Raj who has eyes only for Dr Shivani (newcomer Vipasha). That's because he's the only one who can see the comatose Shivani's spirit, stuck in limbo land between life and death. So the onus is on this 'British Raj' TV host to pull her out of an evil doctor's clutches and back into real life.
Now Just Like Heaven itself had an American critic describe it as "pure hell" when the film hit theatres. I See U isn't half as bad, but it doesn't help that Arjun and Vipasha are the couple "seeing" each other. Vipasha has about the screen presence of a dead fish — she's unconventional-looking, yet has zero charisma to carry it off. This debutante makes all the right noises, but there's no spark, no spunk and she adds little weight to the scattered hilarity in this romantic comedy.
Director Agrawal can't carry the entire story through, but there are a couple of scenes that make you chuckle — as it dawns on a horrified Raj that he's with a spirit or the crazy four-way conversation at a party between his friends Akshay and Kuljeet Kapoor (Chunkey and Sonali, amusing) and a crazy psychiatrist Dr Patnaik (Boman Irani in a fleetingly funny role).
Arjun also pulls off the scene when he's spooked silly by Shivani and ends up offending his sexy co-host Dilnaz (Sophie Chaudhary). No thanks to Sophie, whose acting skills are overpowered by her gigantic pout.
At the end, it's the verbal interplay, the lighthearted music (Vishal-Shekhar) and polished cinematography (Ashok Mehta) that lift I See U. The film has a contemporary feel and at under two hours, it's easy.
Arjun looks dreamy, even though his acting only passes muster. The film has London, Arjun, blink-and-miss images of Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan. So I See U is pretty much beauty without much substance.
