Nitu, a while ago I watched this Turkish serial Cesar ve Guzel(Brave and Beautiful). In that, the female lead is the daughter of a very powerful man of the town. Everyone in the town both hate and fear him. And she knows that. But she loves him. The male lead is also one of the people who hate her father. But when he rescues her from her horse which goes rogue and is almost killed, she develops feelings for him. She knows that he hates her father, yet starts to love him. She has a friend who is her secret keeper. And the friend says that there is something about the person who saves your life. He/she becomes your "hero". You cannot stop your heart from developing feelings for that person.
Here Saifu/Anarkali is first saved by Salim in that desert when she thought she was going to die. In that desert neither Jillan nor Saifu had any prospects regarding their future and were only filled with fear. Meeting Salim and Jodha gave them that protection that they needed at that time. They both experienced kindness and from Salim and Jodha. Salim started with naming her as his "friend". He is shown to treat her with respect and sort of his equal, like how he treats Mahabhat. As a child he had 3 kids who were about the same age as him around him. Of them, Daniyal and Murad were trying to harm him, while Anar was trying to protect him. So for Salim, she was his "protecter", his "friend". He never saw her as anything other than that.
When he is forced to leave Agra, the one person he missed the most was Anarkali. At that point of time, he was angry even with his mom, but the one person who brought smile to his face was Anarkali. From our perspective, this "love" might be sudden, but for Salim, it is a bond of more than 12 years. He has been in love with her all that time without completely realizing it. From the time he comes to Agra, he is shown to feel that restlessness of her not being with him. Just before leaving Agra, he is shown to ask the question as to why he is feeling bad about leaving her and she says you will know once you grow up. Now Salim has grown and has understood what he felt regarding Anarkali all this time.
Coming back, seeing her that way has only fueled his anger even more resulting in him proposing her so early. He is shown to still consider her his friend and not as "kaneez", "rakkasa" or anything else as Akbar or others consider her.
Hope I am able to convey what I mean. 😃
