Tauba Tauba!
Some aunt of mine married a cousin of hers(they had been living in the same house since he was studying in their city) and since then their family and somewhat mine too made sure cousins don't live together LOL.

One more thing that's idiotic is belief that two full brothers share more equal genes than a full brother-sister would! (3 generations back it was prevalent in the society I come from too where marrying your dad's brother's kid was looked on with horror and marrying your bua's Kid was all unicorns and rainbows)
Just cz a man's sister marries someone and might have changed her surname doenst automatically change the genes she passes to her kids which was the whole dumb interpretation!

Your father's brother's kids and your father's sister's kids would be identically genetically related to you!

^So people detest marrying paternal side ke cousins I assume?
Didn't Qubool Hai showed Humaira(Elder brother's daughter) in love with Ayaan(Younger brother's son)? Didn't see any uproar back then?

My cousin from South India secretly dated his cousin since both were 15 years old and then got married when they were both around 25 years old..she had one miscarriage but now they have a healthy child and she is pregnant the second time.. I personally detest the idea of marrying a cousin because they are like siblings..we grow up together.. In Kerala till late 90s it was common to marry cousins but nowadays it's quite rare..my two uncles also married their cousins..one of the uncle's children had some health issues and obesity..but other uncle's children are quite healthy..

I haven't watched that show so I don't know. But in actual society what I told above was the whole basis of this nonsense custom.
Just like some mentally problematic people sleep with full blooded siblings or parents I'm sure the other probably happened too. Just that it didn't get society's blessings

And it's not paternal side alone see.
Father - has a sister - a marriage here was allowed
Father - has a brother - it was frowned upon

Mother has a sister - marriage was frowned upon
Mother has a brother - marriage here was allowed

The logic was sister-sister or brother-brother were genetically more similar than brother-sister which is nonsense where biology is concerned!
If u need a bone marrow match for an example your full blooded siblings have equal matching chances irrespective of their sex. You share same parents means u share same genes :)

I'm so opposed to this as I have seen a first hand instance of extended family for which 3 kids r still paying

In my opinion both are equally gross. Hindus mostly marry Bua's and Mama's kids and tie rakhi to maasi/Tau ji's kids in the south. So contradicting, aren't both cousin's at the end of the day?? Aren't u like blood related anyways. How's it even sane to marry one of them.🥱

It depends on culture and upbringing
If u are raised considering all cousins as siblings of course this custom is gonna be really awkward

But Muslim community still practises this cos its allowed to marry from mother's bro side etc. So then u won't consider them as siblings but spouse material. Soo that way not awk anymore.

I am pakistani and in my family cousin marriage is a norm and all the marriages are cousin related. It made me sick because in a recent marriage the girl was laughing aand joking about calling her fiance , bhai before rishta . One of my friends familt also had cousin marriages norm and now all of the younger generation of the family is going through some mental unstability and they deny that this is because of Cousin marriages even after the word of doctor .

No for me.
But if two people are cool with it. We should not dispute it.
