Part 4: His Lucky Charm

"Naina, itni der kahan reh gayi thi? Yahan bahane bana bana ke thak gayi kabse ki tere sar me dard hai, tu so rahi hai, said Swati. Naina hugged Swati and started circling around with her happily. "Swati, Swati, Swati...ye meri life ka sabse best din tha! exclaimed Naina happily. As the two friends went for breakfast, Naina narrated the entire date to Swati.

"Ye koi waqt hai wapis aana ka? "Kahan tha, kiske sath tha? "Hume batana zaruri nahi hota? Sameer was greeted by a barrage of questions by an annoyed Munna and Pandit at the door. "Arey guys, chill, just morning walk pe gaya tha, lied Sameer. "Tu aur morning walk, wo bhi aise saj dhaj ke! exclaimed Pandit. Munna said, "Bhai, mamla gadbad ho raha hai. Ye jarur us maniben ke sath tha. "Tu use leke serious ho gaya hai kya, pagal hai! Wo bhi koi patane layak ladki hai? Sameer ab tu shart jeet raha hai, itna sab karne ki zarurat nahi hai. Yaad kar apna badla. Jaldi se nipta ise, said Pandit. "Fir wahi shart, shart, shart. Bas karo yaar, tum log subah se lekar sham tak, tote ki tarah ek hi rat lagaye baith jate ho! blurted out Sameer. "Acha acha theek hai, gussa mat kar, pacified Munna. "Chal nashta kar le, fir sightseeing ke liye jaana hai. Aur uske baad principal sir ne cricket ka match rakha hai - 11^th vs. 12^th std.

Post breakfast, the students explored many sights of Mount Abu, including the Achalgarh fort, Guru Shikhar (highest peak of the Aravalli range) and nearby temples. They got back to their hostels around 1 pm.

After some rest from the day's excursions, Sameer and team started with their cricket match. The 12^th standard guys were playing really well. The 11^th standard had lost all hopes; when Sameer came in to bat. And then the scoreboard reversed. Aakhir Sameer tha to Cricket ka champion! Meanwhile, the girls decided to cheer for their class in the match and went to the ground. The situation was tricky now. There was just 1 ball remaining and 11^th std. still needed 6 runs to win. Sameer was at the crease. Suddenly, he remembered how he always used to end a match with his winning six, whenever his mom was there cheering for him. He felt sad and angry as he remembered the headboy competition, when he noticed Naina in the ground. She smiled and showed him a thumbs up. Sameer didn't realize when his gloomy face broke into a smile. Sameer now focused on the incoming ball. Pat! The ball went out of the ground. And it was a six! 11^th std. shrieked in joy. Naina jumped. The team started dancing and lifted a happy Sameer on their shoulders. In all this celebration, he looked over at Naina, this time with a wide smile etched on both their faces. He had got his lucky charm back, he thought.

Evening was free time for the students. Swati, Naina, Sameer, Munna and Pandit decided to explore the shopping area nearby. Naina and Sameer looked the perfect picture of a couple in love, exploring new feelings in life. "Arey Sameer, paani puri khayega kya? Wo dekh! taunted Munna. Sameer and Naina smiled. "Bhaiya, mujhe meethi wali dena, said Sameer smiling sideways at Naina. "Mujhe bhi, said Naina smiling and looking down. As the first paani puri came on Sameer's plate, he slid his plate towards Naina to have it. (La la la theme music plays). Naina smiled and ate the paani puri. When Naina's turn came, she gave her paani puri to Sameer. And so it carried on. Both were silent, but their eyes were doing all the talking. "Ae Pandit, tu bhi kha le meethi meethi paani puri! Khila dun tujhe bhi? smiled Munna at an irate Swati. "Bhaiya, mujhe teekhi wali dena! retorted Swati. Munna and Pandit were busy teasing Swati, while Naina and Sameer were lost in each other.

After having their fill of paani puris, they next decided to go souvenir shopping. Naina selected a designer key chain with "I Love Mount Abu written over it for Sameer. He could use it to put his bike keys and also know, how close they both were to saying those three magical words to each other. Sameer in turn, chose a penstand with a cute doll on it for Naina. While the penstand was useful for the studious Naina, the cute girl was how he saw her now. For Nanu, he bought a beautiful coffee mug.

Naina still had a big list of shopping to do. She chose a book with the latest hairstyles for Preeti. Being girls, Naina and Swati were taking more time for shopping than Sameer and gang. While the girls were busy selecting items for their family and friends, Sameer was waiting outside with Pandit and Munna. "Yaar in logon ko to time lagne wala hai. Chal yaar- ek ek cigarette ho jaye, asked Munna. Sameer was tempted. He eyed Naina. She was involved in the shopping. Surely she wouldn't notice. The trio made their way to a small pan shop and a bought a cigarette each. As they were smoking and busy chatting, Sameer's eyes fell upon Naina and Swati, who had just appeared in front of them. They had been caught! More than angry, Naina looked upset to see Sameer smoke- again. The cigarette was still in his mouth, clutched in his hands. But he had forgetten to smoke now. Naina came up to him. She was looking at him in disappointment and deep down, it somehow hurt Sameer. She took the cigarette out of Sameer's mouth. "Cigarette peene se kark rog hota hai, pata hai na tumhe! Sameer was astonished. Did she really care so much for him? "Mere liye rone wala kaun hai vaise bhi? he replied, quite serious this time. "Dhyan doge to dekhoge, hum sab...tumhare Nana ji, tumhari mummy, Munna, Pandit, Swati aur aur... Naina paused. "Aur?...Hmm...aur kaun hai...bolo na..., prodded Sameer earnestly. "Aur aur...main...bas tum cigarette mat piya karo please, she poured out in a hurry. "Aur aur tum dono bhi, samjhe! she added to Munna and Pandit, lightening the mood. Sameer was touched from inside, but just responded with a small smile and an Okay on the outside. Silently, he threw his cigarette on the ground and lit it off with his shoes. Munna and Pandit followed suit. They all walked back to the hostel.

Post dinner, the star gazing session for the class began. The sky was clear and lit up with stars. Naina was engrossed in the sky. "Yaar Swati chand kahan hai? asked Naina. "Mere saamne khada hai, exclaimed someone from behind. She turned around and saw Sameer smiling slyly. Naina blushed. "Hey Naina, wo dekho Dhruv tara. Ye tumhe tumhara manchaha var dikhayega na, he whispered in her ear. Naina went redder.  "Pandit, tu bhi dekh le Dhruv tara, said a voice from behind. "Uhhh, said an irritated Swati. The session continued with Naina and Sameer trying to get close around each other with some excuse or the other. As it neared midnight, the school called it a day and everyone went off to sleep. Naina and Sameer had got a lot of memories tonight to think of. Sameer had been firm in his head on what he had to do about the bet. But the more he tried to stay away from her, the more involved he was becoming. Why- he didn't have an answer to it as yet.
