Sony Entertainment Television today (August 29) said it has pulled off 'Pehredaar Piya Ki', days after Broadcasting Content Complaints Council (BCCC) directed it to shift the show in late night slot from prime time.

Tejaswi Prakash starrer Pehredaar Piya Ki had received a lot of negative attention ever since it first aired on TV. The show's plot deals with a bizarre love story of a 9-year-old boy with an 18-year old girl.

The channel issued an official statement informing about the same.

"Effective 28th August 2017, we are pulling off our programme, Pehredaar Piye Ki, from television. While we understand that the decision to end this serial will be disappointing to those whose creative energies are vested in it, namely, its crew and cast, we (as a channel) are convinced that we will be better served by focusing instead on developing viewer interest in our upcoming, new shows. We are grateful to all the artists, producers and fans of our shows and request you to graciously support the viewership of our newer ventures," the statement reads.

The show was slammed for being "regressive", with many viewers accusing it for "promoting child marriage." Pehredaar Piya Ki aired its last episode on Friday (August 25).

Pehredaar Piya Ki had been receiving a lot of criticism since day one for showing honeymoon and first night scenes of an eighteen-year-old girl with a boy half her age.

Though similar relationships have been shown earlier on TV with shows like Balika Vadhu which highlighted a social issue like child marriage, but in Pehredaar, the boy is not a victim. He is shown as a romantic hero impressing an older woman.

Television actor Karan Wahi had earlier raised his voice against the show, and many fans had followed him and called for a ban on the show.

Viewers had also filed a petition against the show demanding it to ban. The petition sent to Smriti Irani said, "Pehredar piya ki. A 10-year-old impressionable little kid("piyaa") caressing and stalking a lady who's more than double his age and filling sindoor in her "maang" is being telecasted at prime time 8:30pm on Sony. (Family time) It is to be devoured by the entire Nation. Imagine the kind of influence it will steadily and perpetually infuse in the viewers mindset. We want a ban on the serial. We do not want our kids to be influenced by such TV serials. Join us in signing the petition to ban this serial (sic)."

This is channel's official statement :

Seems like channel wants to focus more on it's new ventures. They have quite a few lined up. Starting with the much talked about show - Haasil.

I think the channel can't handle the controversy anymore and decided to pull it off air rather than simply dragging up the whole issue.

it was BCCC's idea to shift to a new timeslot, and it was sony's decision to pull it off air.

As per show maker, Sony and PH's both. They wanted prime time slot and at late night slot they were not happy. So now he is making a better story (his words) suitable for primetime slot.

Minimum legal age for marriage for woman is 18 and for man is 21 according to Indian law. A 9 year old child had been shown getting married to an 18 year old adult girl. The gimmick is said to be for the protection of the child. A naive 18 year old who hasn't even seen the world is expected to protect the prince from his enemies. Is she more powerful than the government and judiciary? How will she protect him when she herself is a criminal in the eyes of the law? The scenes between them even if shot to look as "CUTE" on screen it becomes distasteful. There were so many ways to take the story forward without involving child marriage in it. If the life of the prince was in danger the protection should have been from the government with the court appointing a Deputy to protect him and his wealth until he reaches legal age. Are we going back to the stone age?

I have hearing lecture from ppk crictizer that child marriage is illegal as if v support er don't know and ppk producer don't know child marriage is illegal
only ppk crictizer has gyan what is illegal or legal

if u watch show properly this show not at all promoting child marriage

promoting child marriage means that to show child marriage any how

but here producer did not show child marriage of ratan any how

otherwise why cvs has not shown child marriage of ratan when his father was perfectly fine

if this show really support illegal thing then why cvs has not shown marriage of Yash whose age is 10Edited by surabhi01 - 6 years ago
