But on jayadev wala maamla, while they need a closure, there can never be reparation. Sometimes relationships are doomed ones and those that are doomed, have to be let go however hard that could be and Just like the no socks clad feet, the Mrs has also to let go of tying weight to her ankles . It's better to let glass that broke be broken . No glue works . Just collect the pieces to not cause more blood loss.

Ca(ugh)t in the center

"No he didnt" "Oh yes he did" "No my eyes were fooling me" she tossed and turned that night reimagining that scene
The spot when he shut his eyes when he carressed his scalp with her manicured fingertips came back to vivid focus

Yes, his eyes were closed like he was enjoying the touch.

He had gotten up and walked away with that tousled hair.

She had ended up playing with the cat for an hour, he had gone off to work by then

Everytime she left the apartment she placed a shoe in between so it wouldnt lock up
When she went to feed the cat

she stayed home that day hoping to ask him if she can get a spare set of keys

"I need keys" "I can return them when I leave"

Leave for where? she thought

She was going to be here the rest of her life

She was unable to concentrate on reading journals
It had been that way the last couple weeks

She wondered if she should go spend the days at the university and try again

She had published three papers with post doc fellows in the past

She wanted to feel good about herself she scoured through the stacks of papers she brought from Ullal

Those were missing
Very disheartening

She wanted to hear her father's voice
She called him at 4 knowing it was his break time

He answered in his usual slow guttural voice

"How are you?" he asked

"I am doing OK" he said

"I was thinking about you" she said tearing up

"I am here only" he said simply

"Is it raining a lot?" she asked

Yes you know our monsoons" he said

"Are you eating well?" she asked concerned

"Yes" he nodded

"Will you promise to look at the folder I gave you?" she asked abruptly

He did not answer

"Aanu. I will never hurt you. I love you, Sanchet and paresh will always say I care for you most, if u recall. I DO  I DO I DO" she whimpered

"You must not. Everything is fine" he said

"Everything is not. You give away half the food for free" she accused

"People have to eat" he said philosophically

"this will help us... you a lot" she back tracked

"everything is good. You should take care" he said sincerely

"How can i be when I know you are working so hard?"

"Well you are working hard too. For your Ph D" he said

"It doesnt matter if I am not successful" she declared

"How can you say that. Our lives are different child. I have almost finished mine. I am an dessert,
I will soon wash my hands and have paan. They have just served appetizer in yours" he explained with his favorite food analogy.

"No it hasnt. no... I dont want you to be done" she was devastated that he was waiting to die

"You must stop worrying" he said
It sounded like he was walking

"can I come see you next week?" she asked

"No child. focus on your marriage. Blessings" he said and hung up

She leaned back on the bed and did a face palm "ayyyo" and cried unwilling to make any progress.

She sat by her bed on the floor with the balcony door open flipping through a thick text book unable to focus.
being trapped in a situation of her own doing.

The cook appeared at 4 to make dinner and was startled to see her home

"Dont you have a job?" she asked Trisha

She shook her head

"And you stay in a separate room" she mumbled in Hindi and rolled her eyes

"Will you start eating here soon?" she asked Trisha

"I can eat tonight"

"You better eat lamb because thats what i am going to make" she said and got busy

She went and brought MJ and hung out with him

Took him back took a nap texted her friends and when he came home at 7, she was feeding the cat and bringing him back

Chirag showed up at 8 to pick him up the cat greeted him

He looked at Ashvin in shock
"dont ask" Ashvin shook his head

"You got a CAT?" he was still in shock, as the furry creature wandered proprietorially through the apartment

Trisha was in her room searching for her own article

The cat purred and went in and found her

"I cant entertain you now I am busy" she cuddled it

"YOU GOT A CAT?" Chirag asked

"Its not my cat. Prasad's" she smiled

"i should have known. there arent too many cats so obese"

"So rude" she scolded lifting the cat's paw to warn Chirag

It slid down and wandered

Ashvin was tuning channels on the TV it went up to him and purred by his foot

"Forget it" he warned the cat to buzz off

"He has lived 5 years across from this one, Ive never seen him touch that thing" Chirag was in awe

Now Ashvin was on the low couch the cat was up by him his tail plonked on Ashvin's thigh

"thats all you get" he hissed tapping it for a second

Chirag couldnt believe his eyes.

Trisha looked down and beat, she stood in the balcony almost the whole time he was there that evening

The men began heating up food.

They talked the whole time dodging the cat as it wandered through the kitchen hoping for a backrub.
It climbed on to the plush window seat and rubbed the cushion with its paws

Ashvin walked over and picked it up and set it on the floor

"I dont think I like you" MJ scowled

"Dont worry the feeling's mutual" he growled back at it.

Trisha coralled it to her room unhappy at hoe he was being treated

Chirag walked to her room "You want to eat with us?"

Chirag's unusual interest in Trisha was getting under Ashvin's skin

He had already talked about sending her cat videos

"Umm.. I will eat later" she nodded

"I can care for your cat as you eat" Chirag made a lame promise, got her to smile

"Its not a baby" she smiled

"Its lamb. She doesnt eat lamb" Ashvin said firmly

Trisha looked at him in surprise

"You told me you only eat fish remember?" he said blandly

MJ was now scratching the white upholstery in the living room
She bent and picked it up quickly gasping in horror

"No... dont do that" she warned and picked it up

"If we have to leave at 9 we better eat" Ashvin instructed
Trisha went to drop the cat off
When she returned Chirag had sat down to eat

Ashvin was setting his TV up for recording some show
"Can I have keys?" she asked standing by the front door

"I dont have Prasad's keys" he said pointedly

"I have Prasad's" she waved a bunch

"Umm OK" he nodded

"i want this door's" she fondled the bolt

"Plans to go out?" he asked

None of your business his mind alerted him

"UMM.. nooo" she denied primly

"I only have one set, my Mom has another set. How about I arrange one tomorrow"

She nodded

"Or" he fished in his pocket and handed her his keys

A simple titanum set with a miniature airplane for keychain
"Here you can have these." he said

"Umm no... its OK I can wait" "u need it to open the door tonight

"Didnt you just say you didnt have plans?" he asked probingly

The wave of mutual self awareness washed over them for a brief second

She extended her palm and he placed them in the center, neatly groomed finger tips touched her hand for a nano second

She wondered if she was even going to be awake to open it...

But she was... she waited for that doorbell to ring.

She opened it in one ring at 1 :07 AM

The much awaited key request has come and staying up to let him in...He remembers like us that she loves only sea food...he offers to make her a set of keys...an indication that they share the house. He tolerates the cat as she loves to pet and pamper it...he even gets to picking it up...Chirag he knows about his wife's meat preference...the cook has picked the fact that they don't share a room...Trisha has pleaded with Aanu to glance through the folder.
The memory of the closed eyes to her touch...the 1.07 response to the first ring of the door bell...the relationship is beginning to take shape...I am loving my morning Raga.

Hair/ Fur cut... Mane Issues... ca(ug)t in the center...

Nisha , you are burning it here with 'cat'chy tales and titles. Ashvin wary of chirag's 'paw' hands is showing that there are many ways to 'skin a cat' which has got Trisha all of a sudden edgy like a 'cat on a hot tin roof' and so she with just 'cat naps' opens the door in one ring leaving Ashvin purring like a 'cat who got the canary 'and as for me I say three cheers to catty episodes of Michael Jackson who with his antics have got the two cats caught in the center with one key . May the box of cat goodies continue to be full. πŸ˜›Edited by Errantnomad - 6 years ago

Quid pro quo

She couldnt bear the waiting anymore, two evenings later she took off for Ullal after Prasad returned. She left his keys on a doorway table.

She stayed up on the bus at night thinking about the cat and what Ashvin was doing. He was probably out with friends all night. Atleast he had the keys now.
She arrived in Mangalore and first went to Jayadeva's apartment. It was locked
She called his room mate he didnt answer

She went to the Physics Deptt and called, he answered

"Its me Trisha" she mumbled

He hung up

She took a bus home
Her father wasnt home, she walked to the restaurant in the midday heat
Her father was surprised to see her

"Why do you miss your parental home so much" Rao Anna hugged her warmly

"I miss my parent too Anna" she said

"We see that. We see that. Every week you tirelessly ride the bus all night and show up here" he said

Her father was mopping the kitchen floor with the stick mop

"Give me I will do it"

"No you eat first" he said quietly
"wont you atleast greet me?"

"My other two kids havent bothered about this old man. Why do you worry so much"

"I love you Aanu"

"then why did you marry a stranger?"

"i dont know... I have no answers anymore. I am unhappy there. I am sad here" she began to cry

Rao Anna began to tear up also

"You should not say that. You will be happy soon" he promised

"I dont know. I married him just so Aanu's life can change. I dont even know the man" she whispered

Her father was shocked

She nodded

"I want you to see I am willing to go to any length to make you happy"

"I am not a 10 year old child. You cannot make me happy with things"

"I know that. I am trying to save the family symbol Aanu"

"By doing what?" he sat down weakly in the chef stool

"I am not a smart girl You know that. I cant cook. I am clumsy. My thesis hasnt been approved. I do crazy things" "I did this to change your life for ever. So you can be the boss"

"I am not the boss. This is a family enterprise. Do you know Rao Anna has invested money here?" her Aanu threw a bombshell

"I DID NOT" she gasped

"This place is running because of many kindness" his chin quivered

"I want everyone to feel relieved and all the financial fears allayed" she whispered sniffling

"Your heart is not allowing you to be at peace. You come here repeatedly. Something is troubling you" her father said sadly

She nodded tearfully

"what is done is done. You did what is right. I must do what is right"

"all because you are so principled?"

"Children should be children"

"You allowed Sanchet to run it"

"We all know what happened" he said and got up abruptly

Rao Anna patted her shoulder to quit it

"I dont know what to do. I want him to be happy Anna"

"I am happy. I am not happy according to your definition. Big city talks. Big ambitions" her father said calmly

"you will end up losing the restaurant this way" she panicked

He picked up his umbrella and his dhoti edge and stepped out into the rain

The folder lay in that exact spot still

She spent three futile days and returned on Friday morning. Rao Anna convinced her he was going to try and convince Shanbag to atleast review the Ready Noodle option.
She had come home with a heavy heart but she was leaving with a small reassurance
Life had changed for ever the day she had decided to go down this path.

She lay awake at night, "the skies looked different in Ullal" The air was dryer in Bangalore

She sometimes slept to the lullaby of distant TV sounds from the living room where Ashvin would be watching TV
Her bed was luxurious too.

The lady cook was home she let her in at 11 AM (unaware that Ashvin had come in and packed a duffel bag and left home)

"You come and go as you please." she said

Trisha did not respond.

Ashvin for his share had an equally lousy three days

His Mom had come in to town and had checked herself into a hotel
One of his cousins had shared that news in secrecy and wished him luck in trying to talk to her

He had met her at Windsor for brunch

"You have left me in no position to champion your cause"

"You married her on a whim, why couldnt you have chosen some one like Aanya Mehra?"

"Who marries the daughter of the man that ruined their life?"

"Everyone in Delhi is upset and angry. Dont come to Delhi anytime soon"

"I am not going to be staying at your place for now"

he listened to it all

He didnt have much from an argument standpoint.

Yes she was right.

He will probably never see a dime of the Narang billions

She still held out on hope because she asked him if Dadu called him

He shook his head quietly

"Dont go to Delhi and fall at his feet now. I will think of something"

"Check out and come stay home Mom" he ordered weakly

"If you cared you wouldnt have married a random girl"

Leela was completely not talking to him

He had enough friends and a crazy evening and night life to keep him going

He actually paused and looked at the cat when Prasad carried it around in the elevator

It scowled at him but he still looked

Prasad asked him when she was due back

"You know she is not in town?" he asked

Ofcourse he does. She is his cat sitter

MJ loves her" he was told.

His friends Avinash, Oscar and Riz planned a Goa trip, Chirag bulldozed him into going
he took off on Friday morning after successfully closing two Vitaessence ( a fresh squeeze vitamin drink franchise) one in Nagpur and one in Agra.

She wasnt going to be home. Even if she was she wasnt going to bother stepping out of her room. He didnt exist for her. Period.

Thats what he wanted anyway... so yeah

Her Friday went in sleeping and WAITING

Unbeknowst to her she waited for the front door to open at 7, 8, 9, 10 PM
When he didnt come home it bothered her
She went to bed chafing

The next day, Saturday when the cook came in the morning

"He is not home. you dont have to cook" she said opening the door

"He never called me" the cook said smugly not believing her

"Well I am telling you. the dinner did not get eaten" she said gleefully in broken Hindi

The lady scoured the kitchen and left huffing

All day Saturday she moped wondering why Chirag didnt come either, seething.
She couldnt go anywhere, she had lucked out when the cook let her in on Friday, she didnt have the keys

She wandered the house, left the door open with a shoe as a wedge and brought MJ home
Prasad was working so his maid gave her MJ

she hadnt thought about Jayadev for one second the last three days

Not one second, she checked on her father texted with her friends. But the remainder of the time

Just plotting the many ways how she would coolly leave on Monday morning.
How she will go away every day and not tell him.

How she wouldnt say a word.

I dont tell him anything
He doesnt either

Why is it pissing me off so much? Its just the keys. He gave you the keys. You left it on the entryway table.

Its his house. Let him come and go as he pleases.

"I need my own keys" "thats all" "You can go and come as you please. But I feel trapped" "I cant go anywhere"

Sunday after midnight when the door opened she tried her best not to fume.

He was shocked to see her in the living room

His duffel bag slipped from his shoulder when he saw her. a momentary delight  flashing across his face

She wore her satin stripe capri and yellow blouse

"Next time you leave and dont return for three days. I need to know" she ordered

"Oh really?" he was livid now

He dropped his bag and approached her

Tired, tousled and pissed

"Why?" he demanded

"I was trapped here for THREE DAYS by myself" she shouted

she froze when she realized she had just declared she was lonely

"I need my own keys" she whispered

"Trisha I am tired. the car broke down. I ve spent 7 hours on the road"

"You never told me you were going on a trip"

"Did YOU?" he asked

She lowered her gaze

Ahahaaah !! the hawa is getting garam now with trade offs of all kinds...
She is unable to admit she missed him around and the pretext of the keys was the perfect sounding board to take off on him !!
And Mr. Nosocks parried immediately with his 'did you ? " squaring the account... DEUCE people !! account settled fair and square

And now we know the culprit is Sanchet and the entire ten year back event can be laid at his door. Poor Father Shanbag was nailed to the cross for no reason...

Wonder why old man Narang is still playing strong and silent ???!

waiting with bated breath to see how this moves forward.

Aha...how long would she have lived this way it's near impossible,  finally she is acknowledging it. Similarly he too, frustrated, tired, irritated with what he has done..me loving this...
