Even if Shahrukh wanted to hide his backstory , he can't considering how much has been written about it , hell there have been documentaries that have covered aspects of his life. He has never denied the fact that his mother was a magistrate or the fact that he went to the school he went to or the college that he went to. But this notion that his father was well off is quite amusing considering how much there is out there about his struggles as well. He had a law degree yet ran a canteen at one point which should tell one that he wasn't successful at what he had chosen as a career. Shahrukh's mother belonged to a very well off family. He has even mentioned that she went to London at one point. And the Maruti car that folks here are referring to was one that was taken on loan and was taken away by the authorities after his mother passed away. Infact this is something he has even talked about. I think he brought that car to Bombay thinking it was paid for but the authorities came to his film set and took the car and it was then that he realized that his mother had bought it on installment or something like that. His struggle is one that has been covered by many out there. Just because his mother was a magistrate or that he went to a really good school doesn't mean he was some filthy rich person. Which is why what he has achieved is a pretty darn big deal. Unlike some folks who claim they are outsiders( when they hardly are) and are darn well off financially too , he's someone who genuinely was an outsider in every sense of the word.
At the same time , despite being an outsider , he will be the first one to say how generous and welcoming the film industry was towards him. But to paint his background as if he belonged to some rich family is darn amusing man.
I think he said this in the Anupam Kher show
