I am kinda shocked at the definition as well. Especially about SRK who during those times went to a very expensive private school, his mother was a magistrate which was/is one of the most prestigious and well-paid jobs. His dad ran canteens and also would have got property and money because of freedom fighter status . This guy had many properties in Delhi. SRk himself has mentioned that in his family one child was send to london to his relatives ..his nana had farmhouses in Bangalore . Like Dahee mentioned it was a big deal if anyone had a car in Delhi during 70s .This guy wasn't Ambani rich or even compared to his present times but he was rich.

As far as Anushka is concerned, she comes from upper middle class, like someone mentioned Army Col entitles many freebies right to a man-friday. Allowances etc. But a magistrate from 60s-70s deffo earned more and had higher pension scales.

Poor middle class, no wonder they are taken for a ride when people fail to identify this invisible majority.

I didn't know much about SRK's financial status until recently when I read this article about Shahrukh and Rituraj Singh(His batchmate in NSD). This guy mentioned how him and Shahrukh were the only ones to own Maruti cars and SRK had a van which was a pretty big deal back then. Also Barry himself mentioned that his struggle was not as much as the likes of Manoj Bajpayee. Him going to St.Columba's didn't say much to me because even some of my middle class friends were from the same school but all these other details that you mentioned say a lot. 😆

Having said that, it is no mean feat what he has achieved and I still have loads of respect for this man and his is the only story which gives me goosebumps till date. Loads of Rich kids come to Mumbai everyday, probably richer than what Shah was, and end up achieving nothing much for a long time and there's this man who owned everything like a boss and made his home itself a tourist spot in the mad mad city. 😆

P.S. The article I read was such a crazy article. Apparently this friend of his was considered to be SRK's look alike and Shah used to ape his techniques while acting, while Shah became a superstar, he got sidelined and ended up becoming a mediocre TV star. Don't know how exaggerated these supposed 'legends and myths' of NSD are, but movies and arts have the most fascinating stories and career graphs. What clicks and how big things might turn out, you can hardly predict. 😆

^^Absolutely, Srk is a success story of sheer hardwork and dedication in a field where there is so much uncertainty. But I read a book by one of his relatives, that chap is a bureaucrat , the stories about their family were interesting and definitely privileged. Just from my understanding, private school education was coveted during those times. Most of the middle class people then send their children to Govt. schools or Central Govt. ones which were respectable those days just not like today's time. This background doesn't take away from his success or his outsider story.

Even if Shahrukh wanted to hide his backstory , he can't considering how much has been written about it , hell there have been documentaries that have covered aspects of his life. He has never denied the fact that his mother was a magistrate or the fact that he went to the school he went to or the college that he went to. But this notion that his father was well off is quite amusing considering how much there is out there about his struggles as well. He had a law degree yet ran a canteen at one point which should tell one that he wasn't successful at what he had chosen as a career. Shahrukh's mother belonged to a very well off family. He has even mentioned that she went to London at one point. And the Maruti car that folks here are referring to was one that was taken on loan and was taken away by the authorities after his mother passed away. Infact this is something he has even talked about. I think he brought that car to Bombay thinking it was paid for but the authorities came to his film set and took the car and it was then that he realized that his mother had bought it on installment or something like that. His struggle is one that has been covered by many out there. Just because his mother was a magistrate or that he went to a really good school doesn't mean he was some filthy rich person. Which is why what he has achieved is a pretty darn big deal. Unlike some folks who claim they are outsiders( when they hardly are) and are darn well off financially too , he's someone who genuinely was an outsider in every sense of the word.

At the same time , despite being an outsider , he will be the first one to say how generous and welcoming the film industry was towards him. But to paint his background as if he belonged to some rich family is darn amusing man.
