SRK's mother , an Oxford educated , executive magistrate who was friends with the likes of leila seth . One of the handful high prolific women magistrate ..yaah, wasn't elite..just your average middle class . Nice. There is a even Shah's own admission how his mother revived her father's businesses.
Again, it's not a knock on the hardships of the man in BW nor is it stating that his time in Mumbai wasn't hard. Just he had a financially stable and probably a privileged childhood in many sense. Thats not to refer to his personal struggles with his parents' death or other events. Just strictly on the gareebi issue of his childhood.

People need to read about women lawyers and how rare, prolific and "elite" they were during those times.

A Muslim, elite woman. SRK is really lucky to be born into an educated, liberal family.

as for Anushka being middle class...are people here aware of Defence colony in Delhi? Or Defencie Housing in Karachi? it's an affluent location where ex. Defence officers live. In which world is affluent = middle class?

SRK and Anushka's struggle in Bollywood is real. SRK's was harder because he lost his parents. Anushka was going back to her posh apartment after auditions.

People here really have a knack of selective reading. And those who are telling others to read , perhaps need to refresh their knowledge as well. One is stating things here that have come from the horse's mouth as they say. Shahrukh has talked about how at one point while promoting Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa in Delhi , he had some person shouting from the audience about how Shahrukh's mother had taken a loan of 5 lakh from him and that he wants it back. There are so many speeches out there where he has talked about the fact that they weren't the elite as some here now are making him out to be. As for his mother , when did one deny that she came from a rich family. He has on record stated she went to London at one point man. One knows that she was a magistrate. As for reviving his father's business , I'm sure she did everything she could to give her kids the best possible childhood she could after his father passed away and even before that but since so many here have such a vast knowledge of his childhood , they would also know they were in a lot of debt. That Shahrukh tried to manage the business after his mother's passing but couldn't as the debts were quite a bit if I'm not wrong.

A family that is buying a car on loan can from no angle be referred to as an elite. Yes , his mother belonged to an elite family but she didn't marry into one. His father was a broke freedom fighter as he described him in his TED Talk if I'm not wrong.

The whole topic is on KJo and his relatives then how does SRK and his relatives come into picture? Now since Salman is good friend of SRK, will his relatives be brought into picture? Or will the relatives of Aditya Chopra, Ritesh Sidwani, Farhan Akhtar, Farah Khan, Rohit Shetty, Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Anushka Sharma, DP, and so on will also be bashed?
What would KJo gain by lying and that too in his autobiography? If he could share about his sexual preferences then this is too small a mater. May be Kjo was referring in general to his relatives status or some of his uncles or aunts were dependent on them. May be his father was in debt for few years so he is referring to that situation.

Government jobs are not high paying! Magistrates are very well respected and it's a prestigious position but it does not make you rich. The pay packages are very modest. My grandpa was a magistrate and he had a gov't car and police escorts. He looked like a king rolling through the streets but they could not afford to go on vacations or even go to see a movie more than once a year. They lived in a rented home. It was a very average lifestyle.

The only way to become rich is if you're corrupt and take a lot of bribes. That's why most people in India want gov't jobs because it opens them up to profit from corruption. I knew of mere ticket collectors in trains who built huge bungalows from their bribery profits.

Most people kill to study and take exams for IAS jobs, not because of the government pay packet but because they want to indulge in corruption. These IAS types are the ones that ask for huge dowries. But if you play by the rules, you will be middle class or even lower.

I realize some people are trolls (not referring to charmingenie) and they would like to prove SRK had it easy but this is getting silly.

Btw, a disease like cancer can bring a family to it's knees. It's a financial nightmare especially back in the days where people were not likely to have insurance. Even with insurance, in modern day America, people fall into huge debts and have to sell their homes, etc. Medical debt is the no.1 cause of bankruptcies even in rich countries. Even previously stable families can lose everything.

Anon39: Completely agreed. Most of my family are in "very prestigious"
Govt jobs/magistrates/doctors etc who look like they're kings from the outside, know a lot of influential/prominent people in society but since they played by the rules, as it was put, are middle class, at best. So ya.
I know exactly what you mean & therein lies the difference between Appearance & Reality.

Coming back to the topic, while SRK was certainly lucky to be born into a very well-educated family & was so himself, he was middle-class at best. Same goes for Anushka whose education background I am unaware of.

Appearances aren't the same at all, as Reality. Most people on IF are too caught up in the Appearance rather than the Reality of things.

Moreover, discussion is not whether SRK was RICH or not, or whether he struggled or not. Discussion is, was his childhood spent better than most MIDDLE class people. Yes, I think it was. Owning a 2nd hand car in 90s was a luxury for many middle class families. Forget 70s. Till late 90s, middle class Indian used to ride scooter with 2-3 kids. 1 bachha aage khada hoga, 1 pichhe biwi ki god mein.

PS -- Some can keep getting amused by my comment. IF is for amusement. 😆😆

Agree with the Bold part... Things started to slowly change in the mid 90s but that was the case up until the 90s.

Even (landline) phone was not common atleast not in every home in India (including middle class)

I 've heard, before 90s calling neighboring town was not easy,
