Begum Jaan Budget & Box Office Collection

Vidya Balan's Begum Jaan had taken a low opening of 15-20% today despite of it being a holiday in many parts of the country for Ambedkar Jayanti and Good friday.

This opening is decent for a normal day but if you consider that it is a holiday the opening looks poor.

Begum Jaan has been hit by a clash with hollywood biggie Fast and Furious 8 as well as Punjabi movie Manje Bistre featuring Gippy Grewal which has also opened well in Punjab and Delhi city.

Begum Jaan is a low budget movie and a remake of critically acclaimed Bengali film Raj Kahani with setting changed from Bengal Bangladesh border to North India.

Vidya Balan 's star pull has also been on a decline post Kahani with even Kahaani 2 ending up as a flop and which is reflecting in the opening day.

Begum Jaan Budget

Begum Jaan is made on a budget of Rs 19 Crores all inclusive

Production Cost: 12 Crores

Prints & Advertising Cost: 7 Crores

Begum Jaan Hit or Flop

Begum Jaan Needs to cross 30 Crores to be called a hit.

Begum Jaan Screens

Begum Jaan is releasing in around 1100 screens pan India.

Vidya Balan's Begum Jaan had a low opening day despite of it being a holiday in many parts of the country for Ambedkar Jayanti and Good friday.

Day 1:
3.5 Crore Trade Figure
3.94 Crore Producer Figure

Begum Jaan first day was lower than 3rd day of Fast and Furious 8

In comparison Punjabi movie Manje Bistre featuring Gippy Grewal collected 2.25 Crore Producer Figure from just 200 odd screens in Punajb , Haryana and Delhi City.

Begum Jaan First Day collections are 10th highest of 2017 but that is only due to other releases being less so far

Begum Jaan movie review: Too much masala, very little taste

Srijit Mukerji's remake of Bengali film Rajkahini, Begum Jaan is a masala movie based on a sensitive topic. And that's only the start of its problems.

The story is set in the backdrop of partition - the original told the story of Bengal, but this one takes us to Punjab. The premise is simple: land-owning women fighting for their home, a home that a certain Radcliffe line would break into two halves, placing them in two new countries called India and Pakistan.

Conceptually, it sounds more than promising, what with Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, and Chunky Pandey in prominent roles. But the film falls flat on its face, caricaturing what indeed is a powerful tale, reducing it to 'honourable prostitutes' vs 'evil suited men'.

THE PAINFUL ACTING

Balan's Begum Jaan is the madam of a fairly opulent brothel. She owns the land, has her own security, and has her taxes paid by the king (Shah), who is a regular visitor. Her word is final on all matters in this non-traditional household.

But Begum too has a traumatic past - widowed as a child, abandoned, until she finally finds her footing as a tawaif in Lucknow. Her girls are all rescued and have their own subplots in the story. Barring Gauhar Khan's romance with a helper in the kotha, there's not a single relationship that seems real. And that's thanks to some very bad acting.

In one scene, a child growing up in the brothel demands that she be allowed into her mother's room while she solicits. It establishes nothing. Not the child's pain, not the tense environment she grows in, not the mother-daughter relationship. Absolutely nothing.

Barring hitman Kabir (Chunky Pandey), an old-school villain, there is almost no scene where an actor's presence arrests the viewer in Begum Jaan.

A random Holi song

IMPORTANT THEMES BRUSHED ASIDE

What's most frustrating about this film is not that it's dramatic or a bit OTT. No, it's that it takes a story that could have been something and mercilessly flattens it out with a rolling pin.

Begum Jaan pans out in such unbelievably predictable ways that one can't help but wonder if Mukerji wanted to botch up a good story. It's almost cruel.

It also resolves conflict in embarrassingly simplistic ways. In one sequence, a police-wallah ready to rape a mother in front of her kids is shamed by the child. Because of course, the child is like his own daughter. Because, of course, a woman can be respected only if she reminds you of your mother, sister, or daughter. Everyone else is meat.

At one point in the film, there's a short insinuation of romance between two girls in the brothel. It lasts for all of one sexy scene, before the nuance of such a relationship in such a space is lost forever. Perhaps Mukerji could've watched Leena Yadav's Parched to take a few notes on handling female friendships, especially if he wanted to insinuate queer romance.

The ownership of land is a significant theme that is repeatedly established by the characters as they shout "ye humara ghar hai!" Got it, but could the makers have perhaps pointed out how that's a privilege only a woman who trades her body could gain at the time. The politics of that land, which is all that the film revolves around, is never discussed.

Instead, there are songs, completely shallow characters, and themes that are opened but never explored. And, to top it off, there's Vidya Balan's theatrics, sure to rid one of any empathy they may attempt to develop for the story and its characters.

Begum Jaan Movie Review: Feminist Statement Drowned By Noise

Rajeev Masand | CNN-News18 RajeevMasand

Begum Jaan opens on a strong note. In present day Delhi, some thugs are ruthlessly violating a woman. But in one altering moment they are shamed instead. Writer-director SrijitMukherji makes a point about how women have had to harness the power of the female body to face up to bullies. In that, the film's theme is quickly established. The movie then shifts decades into the past, when a closely-knit group of sex workers stand up against the tyranny of men and their politics. In the end, these women grab a choice with both hands even when it might look as if they don't have any.

It's a shame then that the film nosedives into an abyss of hammy over-the-top acting and clichd writing. Begum Jaan is a remake of Mukherji's own 2015 Bengali film Rajkahini, and it tells the story of a madam in 1947 (VidyaBalan) who finds out that the partition line that will separate India and Pakistan neatly runs right through her sprawling brothel. Government officials try to convince Begum, the prostitutes working for her and their hotchpotch family to leave the brothel, but she digs her heels in, inviting violence from the disgruntled men.

The film has an interesting premise and Vidya is commanding as the feared brothel owner who lords over her home. What lets it down is the shrill treatment. Virtually every character - side players even - are prone to loud outbursts, which means you'll be searching for a quiet spa after the assault on your ears.

It doesn't help that the narrative is routinely sidetracked by examples of Razia Sultan, the Rani of Jhansi, and Rani Padmavati of Mewar. Stories of their valor and bravado are passed down to a young child, with Vidya imagined in these roles, thereby suggesting that Begum is viewed as a savior by her girls, her faithful bodyguard (Sumit Nijhawan), a manservant (Pitobash Tripathi), and an elderly matriarch (Ila Arun). They stand up to the Congress and Muslim League officials (Rajit Kapur and Ashish Vidyarthi respectively) who want to send them packing. Unfortunately, however, Begum is also let down by trusted allies.

Mukherji packs too much into this narrative with multiple secondary characters and their back-stories. The violent incidents and constant swearing come at you so often, you turn slightly numb. Vidya throws herself into the part, but plays Begum Jaan so many octaves above normal - it's a waste of her acting talent. Only Gauhar Khan as one of the girls in Begum's inner circle, and Chunky Pandey in a slimy villain role, stand out in the sea of characters. The rest belong to the Highstrung Academy of Overactors.

I'm going with a generous two out of five for Begum Jaan. There is a strong feminist statement here, but unfortunately, it's drowned out by all the noise.

No chance for this film to survive with medicore reviews. Smaller films need an average rating of 4* to do well at BO.

Vidya was top-notch!!! She ooozed this rough raw sex to Begum Jaan &a that powerful husk to her voice, so effective to suggest her sexual guilds but also her addiction to hookah. I loathed the master even more than Kabir!!! Because it was so very easy to believe in his goodness, his decency but he was far worse than all the men put together, the sort of tiger who will eat his own children ; and who is in sheeps clothing!!! I watched this just yesterday & ive great hatred for him!!! Poor poor girl. 😭 But I found the whole film too disturbing! Esp the scene where they're eating.. And we know what follows. As an animal lover, esp a dog lover, that has me extremely disturbed!!! As was the end. Not for me was there empowerment in the climax.

A nice film for less sensitive souls I reckon. A+ effort for my Vidya. She elevated a film just by being in it. <3

I've to say that in the scenes mentioned in three reviews which belong to Gauhar Khan & Pallavi sharda, they were all the more impressive than Vidya!! Pallavi in her death scene was damn good! Always thought Gauhar is a very under-rated actor.

I have liked Gauhar in whatever roles she has done so far like Rocket singh, Ishaqzade etc.
