Kaabil Movie Review

Meena Iyer, TNN, Updated: Jan 24, 2017, 12.11 PM IST

HRITHIK HAS WHAT IT TAKES TO BE KAABIL

KAABIL STORY: When they get hitched, visually-impaired couple Rohan Bhatnagar (Hrithik) and Supriya Sharma (Yami) light up each other's lives. Unfortunately their dark world goes topsy-turvy when Supriya is raped and Rohan finds the policemen playing blind's man's buff. Leaving him with no choice, but to take the law into his own hands.

KAABIL REVIEW: Revenge is a dish best served blind is the message Kaabil serves up. Drawing inspiration from Hollywood's Blind Fury (1989) with Rutger Hauer in the lead and even borrowing shades of the Korean super hit, Broken (2014), Sanjay Gupta gives you a Bollywood adaptation that is entertaining and effective. For starters he lovingly sets up the beautiful world of a blind couple " Rohan, a proficient dubbing artiste and Supriya, a talented pianist--who despite their handicap have a positive disposition towards life. In just two scenes, you can feel their love. So much so, when they get separated from each other for a few minutes at a mall, you start feeling anxious. Also, when this couple breaks into the Mon Amour dance, it's so magical, you find yourself clapping gleefully. But whether it is life or a Bollywood thriller, life is definitely not all song and dance. When a cad, Amit Shellar (Rohit Roy) and his scum-buddy Wasim (Sahidur Rahman) rape Supriya, Rohan's world is plunged into even more darkness than the one he is born into.
Predictably the rapist Amit is the brother of the local corporator, Madhavrao Shellar (Ronit Roy), so the corrupt police officers, played efficiently by Narendra Jha and Girish Kulkarni, drag their feet over the investigation. When the humiliation gets too much to bear, Supriya caves in, leaving Rohan with vendetta on his mind. Here's the film shifts gear and though you know what's next, the cat and mouse game still gives you an adrenaline rush. Every time the blind vigilante commits an atrocity, you whistle in the aisle.
The highlight of the film is Hrithik's bravura performance. He is vulnerable as a lover and menacing as a killing-machine. Half a star in the movie-rating is reserved for his all-time best performance here. Yami provides the perfect foil, subtle and super-effective.
Technically the film is adept, thanks to with masters like Sudeep Chatterjee (camera) and Resul Pookutty (sound). However Rajesh Roshan's yesteryear hits"saara zamana and dil kya karen in their remixed avatars are pale imitations of their original versions.

Movie Review: Hrithik Is As Kaabil As Ever, The Rest Of This Vendetta Drama Certainly Isn't

Bollywood returns with an eye for an eye, badla movie with too many script flaws and cliches

Khalid MohamedJan 24 2017 12:27 PM

Yum,just for starters don't be glum. Life's as sweet as a mango. The hero here can cook up a delicious Vegetable Kolhapuri, rescue his lady love from a jampacked shopping mall and break into a neat tango. So what if the script is poised to become as macabre as a story by Edgar Allan Poe? Oh oh.

That's typical Sanjay Gupta Gyan, pleasure precedes pain as it does in all of his films (the last one was the jeepers creepers Jazbaa). And as it happens, Kaabil, is no exception to this director's aao revenge karen' rule. A morsel of dialogue goes to chant the ancient proverb about how an "Eye for an eye" can be sweet. Perfect material for a troll-worthy tweet. Sorry but in this day and age, I beg to disagree.

Grabbing the law into one's hands, showing a rape victim resorting to suicide by hanging, and at another juncture, such lines are dribbles as, "This couple is so fair and lovely. They will have gora gora children." These elements are severely outdated if not regressive.

And what's with the Bollywood movies anyway? Everyday speak is littered with bombastic punch-lines. Examples" "Darkness cannot light up darkness" and "A dog is loyal even if it has to chew on a bone. So don't you dare expect a boneless meal." Strange to say the least.

Indeed Bollywood's gone stir crazy on meaty dialoguebaazi. And come to think of it. this vindaloo is just another tough-to-digest Sanjay Gupta vendetta fest - killings carried at out warehouses, fatal slug-outs at building construction sites and an innocent butcher being stabbed in the tummy at a boulder-studded spot. Located in Mumbai, the usually buzzy city appears to be sound-proof to cries of help, screams and any tender mercies. Our maximum city just snores-n' sleeps through dastardly deeds being committed within ear shot. Now really.

Okay so even if you suspend your sense of disbelief, first of all you will have to slap yourself to say, come on, this is just a movie. Make room for dramatic licence dude, just don't think about those online reports tracing the Kaabil story to the Korean flick Broken and the Netflix series Daredevil. And maybe you can snooze through an item number in a hi-fi club which actually resembles the defunct Capitol cinema. Still, all these forgiveness factors can't connect you to actually rah-rah the ouchcome.

Frankly, a pall of gloom descended over me. Primary reason: neither producer Rakesh Roshan nor the unarguably gifted actor Hrithik Roshan needed this.
Whatever possessed the Roshans to opt for this project which harks back to the jawbone-for-a-jawbone blood-curdlers of the 1970s and 80s? Maybe it was viewed as an opportunity for Hrithik to play an empathetic, visually-impaired David who turns Goliath in face of gross injustice. But then hasn't he enacted the challenging quadriplegic before in Guzaarish? Or maybe there hasn't been a badla movie in ages. Er, say cheese but what about Badlapur please?

Any which way, to be absolutely honest my heart and unshed tears went out to Hrithik. He's a tremendous, meticulous actor who strives to breathe conviction into every minor and major scene. Snag: the scenes have an excruciatingly fake quality about them like a Rs 300 currency note. Sad.

So there you are with Rohan Bhatnagar (Hrithik, natch) who after a brief courtship weds Supriya aka Sue (Yami Gautam), also visually impaired. The backstories for their sightless condition is kept under wraps. Not necessary in these fast-paced days, presumably.

Next: the mohalla baddies (Rohit Roy and an Expressionless Wonder) heckle the newly-weds and subject the bride to rape, not once but twice. Rohan, who's a dubbing artiste incidentally, now has to employ his flexible vocal chords, mental astuteness and miscellaneous sensory faculties to teach the twosome a deadly lesson. Quite stealthily achieved.

What no tension and terror? You bet there is. After all one of the baddy's brother (Ronit Roy) is one of those teeth-gnashing politicians who has the cops in his coll kurta pockets. And hello, if there's a semi-honest police officer, he's tempted with an almirah full of money. Look closer though, half the almirah is stacked not with cash but fat files. No wonder the honest Mr Khakhi, pooh-poohs the bribe. May there be more of this tribe.

Devoid of a sub-text altogether - unless you can detect some jumbo mumbo about the politician threatening to engineer communal clashes - technically, too, there's too much artifice like the recurrent shots of a sealine supported by visual effects tetrapods. Or were they cardboard? The editing goes for old-fashioned wipes at one point.

Moreover there are contrived plants' galore - a child's bicycle, a wrist-watch and the establishment of an open hole at a construction site which are recalled in the event of dire crisis. Come on Mr Gupta, smell the espresso. Such elements are as jarring as the bewigged and faux-moustached police inspector (incarnated with gallons of gravitas by Narendra Jha). Alas, the performances of Yami Gautam and the supporting cast range from the serviceable to unimpressive.

A word of caution here: I'm no trade soothsayer. Bollywood movies come with their own destiny and fortune. Strictly for the sake of Hritihik Roshan, who invests seamless conviction and expertise into the vulnerable Rohan Bhatnagar, I wish Kaabil is a commercial upper. Quality-wise, Kaabil, left me igloo cold.

So would I recommend a look-see?: For Hrithik yes, for the rest of Kaabil NO.

'Kaabil' - Movie Review

By Mayank Shekhar | 24th Jan 2017

Rating:

"Andhera andhere ko roshan nahin kar sakta," says the blind heroine in this film (Yami Gautam; such natural on-screen presence), to the blind hero (Hrithik Roshan) she's out on a coffee-date with. This is the part, ideally if you were at an old-world single screen cinema, you would hear a front-bench wit go, "Par Hrithik toh roshan kar sakta hai!" Yeah, there are a bunch of such one-liners in this movie.

The picture itself, as you would know from the promos, is about a blind couple. Sure, love is blind. The speed with which this beautiful looking couple goes from that coffee-date to a wedding proposal, signed and sealed, proves if two people can't see each other, love and affection can get on a blindingly fast track as well.

Such is however the demand of this story, central to which isn't a romance (although there's some of it), but an all-consuming thriller about crime (rape), and punishment (revenge). There's a minor twist by the minute. The lead couple, already visually impaired, is up against odds that are even further stacked up against them - caught as they are between municipal politicians (Rohit, Ronit Roy) and a bunch of thug Mumbai cops (Narendra Jha, Girish Kulkarni). The ensemble cast is top-rate.

One can imagine why the filmmakers would have picked up this dark, riveting drama. It's the kind of script (by Vijay Kumar Mishra) that, if being narrated to a room full of listeners, would have absolutely everyone guessing what happens next.

To top that, in a very Bollywood sense, there is a distinct mid or interval point. Soon after which the hero completely transforms himself to seek poetic justice. Yeah, it is the sort of story producer Rakesh Roshan has been attracted to, pretty much throughout his commercially successful directorial career ('Khoon Bhari Maang', 'Karan Arjun', 'Kaho Naa Payar Hai').

At the centre of it all is Hrithik as the blind man, with a hyperactive mind, but no obvious super-powers. So well, he is not 'Daredevil' (from the Netflix show) by any means. His character does have a heightened sense of smell, sound, geography, but that's probably true for most blind people.

In a passionately scripted career, Hrithik has attempted to push boundaries as an actor and play rather difficult characters, often dealing with human infirmities"paraplegic in 'Guzaarish' (possibly his most under-rated film), man-child ('Koi Mil Gaya') etc. He brings the same sort of skill and earnestness to the role of an under-stated yet raging blind man, who can surely dance, even if briefly, although the music isn't quite world-class.

Does the film itself live up to the expectations though? Well, that depends on your expectations. There is a lot of realism missing in what's supposed to be a gritty thriller. Locations seem semi-fake. In portions, the film itself appears slightly cold, and thoda sa plastic.

But if you were to keep your eyes glued to the screen and follow the blind man's graphite walking stick right down to the picture's climax, I'm fairly certain you won't be disappointed. Yeah, it is, for the most part, kaabil-e-tareef!

Shahrukh Khan And Hrithik Roshan Clash This Week
Tuesday 24 January 2016 13.30 IST

Box Office India Trade Network

Hrithik Roshan clashed with Akshay Kumar a few weeks back with Mohenjo Daro against Rustom and came off second best and here the gap in the initial will be more as there is a huge miscalculation from the makers of Kaabil. The hero and the heroine are blind in Kaabil and the promos show this clearly so even if the film was solo it would have struggled to open. In fact till date no film with a blind male lead has ever grossed big at the box office. Its surprising that a big banner like Filmkraft have made such an error as Kaabil is more of a content film and needs space and time. The film has fetched high prices from distributors and that is probably why the film stuck to the date because a change would have led to distributors renegotiating deals to a lower price even though a date change would have benefited all. The film has huge table profits before release. Another problem is that its a content film but the director tends to make films inspired from the West or Far East and generally void of emotions so he will have to surpass the previous works in a big way for Kaabil to have the content to get big numbers.

Raees has Shahrukh Khan and a solid theatrical trailer which gives an impression of a mass film so the initial is going to come. There is a clash with Kaabil but initially it will no surprise if it is just a one horse race. The only problem with Raees is that it has turn out the sort of film that the theatrical shows it is. The director of the film has made a few films but very art like films (Parzania, Lamhaa) while the banner Excel Entertainment also make films with a different cinematic language and narrative be it Dil Chahta Hai, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Dil Dhadakne Do, Baar Baar Dekho and the Rock On films among others. If the film is like the theatrical shows and a full out Hindi mass film with action, dialogues and Shahrukh Khan then it will be hard to stop. But if the treatment is like what the banner and director have given to their previous films then the public is no fool and will find out very fast and then its just about where the initial star power of Shahrukh Khan can take it.

The makers of both films are fighting for shows so the advance has not started at many places. In fact for Kabil it has hardly started anywhere while Raees advance started at some places over the weekend and has raced ahead. Its hard to judge pre sales due to the limited screens open for advance but most should open today and there will be a clearer idea of sales by the end of the day.

'Kaabil' v/s 'Raees' the battle is on

Mrunali Bhatkar| TNN | Updated: Jan 24, 2017, 01.22 PM IST
The countdown for battle is on. 'Kaabil' versus 'Raees' is the first big clash of this year. And the makers of both the films are leaving no stone unturned to make sure that the film reaches the most. The first stage of this battle is the number of screens each film has managed to bag. Reports suggest that single screens have opted for the Shah Rukh Khan starrer 'Raees' over the Hrithik starrer as the storyline of 'Raees' is more relatable with the single screen audience.

While single screens have titled their support towards 'Raees', the multiplexes across the country have opted for almost an equal release for both the films.

That is if you see the ratio:

Multiplexes: 55:45 in favour of Raees
Single Screens: 60:40 in favour of Raees

The estimated screen count of 'Raees' is close to 2700 as compared to 2200 for 'Kaabil'.
Both films will see each other at the box-office on 25th January, and the battle is surely the one to look out for.

Kaabil-e-Tareef move!
MANISHAA R | Tue, 24 Jan 2017-06:00am , Mumbai , DNA

Hrithik, Rakesh held special screening of Kaabil for distributors last week

The clash between Raees and Kaabil has put exhibitors in a tricky position. The Mumbai distributor of Kaabil had revealed how the Raeesdistributor, who was also releasing Baahubali, had tied up with several single screens, urging them to screen Raeeswith the promise of Baahubali 2.

Not one to take things lying down, Rakesh Roshan, the producer of Kaabil, had a special screening of his film for all exhibitors in the trade last week, "He invited all single-screen and multiplex exhibitors to a showing of 50 minutes of the film, with all its songs and clips. He was present with Hrithik Roshan and Sanjay Gupta for the screening, after which he requested exhibitors to split the shows. He also made it clear that he had no pre-condition of exclusivity," this exhibitor revealed.

The exhibitors present at the screening were impressed with the film. As of now, the exhibitors who have opted for Kaabil may not be screening Raees and vice versa. According to another exhibitor, "While both films are promising, the fact cannot be denied that Baahubali 2 is one hell of a promising bait."

According to Nitin Datar, the president of COEAI (Cinema Owners And Exhibitors Association of India), the single screen association, "Both films continue to be booked at various theatres, and both distributors are trying for the maximum number of shows. Everyone will suffer because the collections will get divided."

Good to see the movie getting such positive reviews. Wish it was a solo release. Good luck to the team. Hrithik needs a hit after the debacle of Mohenjo-daro.
