Dhoom 2 : Film Review

Updated: 11-25-2006 By andhracafe

Starring : Hrithick Roshan, Abhishek Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu ,Uday Chopra. Direction: Sanjay Gadhvi.

Amazing adrenaline. Exciting energy. Gloss and grandeur bordering on the grotesque. The power house-money bag is willing to put it all to earn a lot more and why not!!
Style over substance can be a statement in it self and is often beyond value debate.

You have a choice: take it or l eave it. Here style is the substance and the substance of the style is how Bollywood defines it. Cool dudes and skimpy dressed gals. Panoramic outdoor and chic interiors. You have it all where it matters. Most importantly it has the clash of the genext- Hrithick and Abhishek. Who wins?

Hands down: Hrithick.Dhoom 2 is all about the hackneyed _ chor police game filmmakers play. The scale and style is what makes it a talked of film- that is if you overlook the hype and the branding budget Yashraj can afford or are willing to spend on. The international heister A is on the run- chasing him are Jai (Abhishek) and Ali( Uday Chopra) Joining the gang is Sonali (Bipasha).

The bad guy too needs company so we have Sunehri (Aishwarya) who is a stylised Basanti. The chor police chase soon peters into a Tom and Jerry game. For bonus the production house also adds some in house talent exposure (literally and otherwise) .This is in the form of Ali and his love life with Monali ( again Bipasha) .
It does not call for too much intelligence to understand the course of the plot or its final reach.

In fact the film does not call for too much intelligence for anything. For a change it does not call for too much tolerance. Cool stuff in that limited understanding. The tale of the thief out smarting the law and the law catching up is too basic to augur reverence of any kind. Will our cinema have the guts to declare evil the victor? No chance. Can we then by default show the law loosing out ? Even less- not because we love the law more but because we detest the truth.

The multi starer gives most of the guys their moments. Uday Chopra had the advantage of the home wicket and like an Indian batsman makes good use of the opportunity. I wonder however if this will do anything to advance his career till Bhaiya Aditya or Papa Yash plan another for him or with. Abhishek is his usual self. Perhaps for the first time in his career he experiences another star in the cast .

He gets his signature sincerity to the script and that is saying a decent amount in the context of his kind of cinema. While Bipasha is breezy in the second half and shows that a lot of effort has gone into getting into shape- she does not have much to do with the script. Aishwarya has a great role which not surprisingly she fails to understand. Her looks could kill. Gorgeous 'in a single word you can sum up her contribution.

For one who has had such a wonderful chance to essay a character that is negative yet human classy yet down to earth she fails. Yet another opportunity gone. The film finally and surely belongs to Hrithick. He oozes sex appeal and yet a charm that is not just about body language. His confidence is in perfect tandem with his sensitivity and he takes the film to a new high. The film, coming after it does after Krish is a back to back reiteration of his screen presence and talent. Hats off to the guy. For just him Dhoom 2 is unhesitatingly recommended.'

Bipasha Basu speaks on 'Dhoom 2'

Saturday, November 25, 2006 05:02:46 pm

With 'Dhoom 2' raking in the moolah at the box office on its opening on Friday (Nov 24), actress Bipasha Basu's hold in the industry has naturally become much stronger. TIMES NOW catches up with Bipasha and elicits her views on 'Dhoom 2'.

On being asked about her reaction on the flying start of 'Dhoom 2', Bipasha said that, "When your work is appreciated in the film in which you have worked, it's always great to get good reactions. I'm very happy, I would have loved to be in Mumbai, but it is good I'm hearing about the film doing great, so I'm happy."

When asked about her performance in the Mega Multistarrer, Bipasha said, "I think 'Dhoom 2' is a kind of a look centric film, where there is more focus on the style, stunts, looks, lovely locations, great bodies, so I don't think it is a kind of a film where you can say that this is the best performance of my life. I can say that in this film I have looked the fittest, I've looked my best. I have got many pleasant memories attached with 'Dhoom 2', making Dhoom 2 was great fun."

On being asked about, whether too much publicity was given to Aishwarya Rai's look in the film, Bipasha averred that, "I think it was absolutely necessary to talk about the styling of Ash because it is very drastically different to the kind of image Ash has kept before 'Dhoom 2'. She has done many Indian centric roles and for her to wear mini-skirts and bikini tops at this juncture, I think it is a drastic change and was talk worthy."

When asked about her upcoming releases, she said, "Well right now, I'm very happy with the release of 'Dhoom 2' and after that there is "Mr Fraud', so I'm excited about it."

Dhoom 2 is like Dhoom, a hit!

BY A STAFF REPORTER | Saturday, November 25, 2006 8:10:35 IST

The mind-blowing stunts and stunning beauties attracted people to theatres

Yesterday the much-awaited film of the year, Dhoom 2 released with its first day first show practically house full in Metro. The audience of this 11.30 am show left the theatre well satisfied and appreciative of Sanjay Gadhvi's fourth directorial venture. This movie is packed with young dynamic stars such as Abhishek Bachchan, Hrithk Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Bipasha Basu and Uday Chopra.
Giving a critical account of the movie was KC College student Ankit Jain said, "The story line and the situations that cropped up in the movie were the same as the first Dhoom. And Abhishek is completely wasted in the movie as his role is of a side hero. The stunts are mind blowing,". Hrithik is seen roller-blading, sky diving, sand boarding, snow boarding, jumping off a cliff (with Aishwarya) in this movie. Both Aishwarya and Hrithik are playing villains in the movie.
Agreeing with Ankit is his fellow college student Pratik Jain. "Abhishek has a side role. And although Bipasha has a double role, she hardly appears on screen. She did look good in the bikini scene though!".
Criticising Abhishek Bacchan is Sneha Shah. "He has not acted well. He should have been given better clothes at least. The movie will do nothing for him," said Sneha, who is a student of KC College. "However Hrithik is very good. Not only has he acted well, but he looks amazing and he has done some awesome stunts in this movie," said Sneha, adding that Uday Chopra was at his funniest best.
The film's score and soundtrack is composed by Pritam and lyrics are penned by Sameer. However, the music in the movie did not be a hit with the audience. "The songs are miserable, the music is awful," said Mamta Gundecha, another student of KC College.
Sanjay Mehta, and ad filmmaker had the same opinions for the movie. "The locations were good. The costumes of the actors should have been much better. Overall, the movie is good. It will be as big a hit as the earlier Dhoom, if not be more successful. And I do not mind watching the movie again," said Sanjay.

Dhoom 2

By Jay Mamtora, AllBollywood.com Staff
November 24, 2006

It's time to "dhoom machale" once again as the most anticipated sequel of the year (if not the decade) hits theatres near you. Dhoom resurrected Abhishek's career from way down in the doldrums in 2004 when youngsters all over India (and the rest of the world) patronised it - and that too in a major way. Fast bikes, explosive action scenes, hot babes Dhoom had it all. Dhoom 2 pretty much has the same formula - though on a far bigger scale. Everything about the film is HUGE. Its canvas, its stars, locations - Dhoom:2 has it all and will undoubtedly smash box office records.

Mr A aka Aryan (Roshan) is a wily thief who masterminds the most impossible heists worldwide and leaves no trail besides an 'A' insignia at the scene of each crime. Like its predecessor, a no nonsense, ill tempered cop Jai Dixit (Abhishek) and his bumbling sidekick Ali (Chopra) are assigned the almost impossible task of bringing Mr A to justice with the aide of ACP Shonali Bose (a piping hot Bipasha Basu).

Several foiled attempts at capturing Aryan go terribly wrong and he seems virtually unstoppable. That is, till the bandit sets eyes on femme fatale Sunheri (Rai) - a copycat thief and falls for her charms. Aryan is unsure of her motives and the rest of the plot deals with their sizzler of a relationship meshed with a crazy cat and mouse chase that requires the audience to suspend all belief and generally enjoy the joyride. Truly the game really isn't over!

First things first. Dhoom:2 has nothing that even remotely resembles a plot. You're so busy feasting on the babes, the explosions, the designer gear, silly yet enjoyable humour, the torsos and the abs that you fail to realise that there really isn't much of a story or in fact any sort of logic unfolding on screen!

But therein lies the beauty of this franchise. There's no art house boredom, no sleep inducing drama and no sickly romance. Don't look for logic buddy - because there isn't any! It's all just one big rollercoaster ride and it's fun fun fun!

Of the performances D:2 is undoubtedly a Hrithik Roshan showcase all the way. He looks and dances like a dream, does daredevil stunts with equal panache and delivers the most inane line with the earnestness and honesty in a way that only he can. With him in the frame every single character pales in comparison. He's that good.

Dhoom is one big experiment for Aishwarya as she tries to break away from her classic period beauty tag. She's required to look hot and if other actresses can do it, Ash makes sure she does it too - only several shades better. She looks so foxy that I think I stepped on a puddle of drool on my way out of the auditorium. Her performance is average though and her poorly written character only adds to her (and the audiences) woes. But her modelling experience comes in handy as she poses in the skimpiest of attire and dances as raunchily as she possibly can for us to come to the conclusion, that this woman can not only look beautiful she can also set temperatures soaring if the need arises. Her chemistry with Hrithik too is fantastic and one wonders why it took producers so long to cast them together!

Uday is average at best and after a while begins to grate on your nerves, especially when you know that someone like Saif would have pulled his role off with flying colours. But I guess having family up in high places helps! Bipasha is good as the ACP but downright silly as the bimbette in Brazil and her double role act is one of the most pathetic twists in the tale. But she too looks jaw droppingly gorgeous and pulls off her bikini act and plunging necklines as comfortably as she always does.

Unfortunately the weakest performance comes from Abhishek who seems awfully blas throughout and pales to Hrithik in every single department. Even that likeable trademark swagger and unshaven look do not help him in stepping out of Hrithik's shadow. It's a shame really as the original Dhoom is the film that launched his fledgling career to the skies. Get your act together dude - you gave us KANK this year (a move that you made worth watching) - your laziness here is completely unpardonable be it in your unkempt look or your lazy performance!

So...the question on everyman's lips is, does Dhoom live up to the hype? It does yes and will appeal to audiences starved of escapist entertainment. As I said earlier, there's no point in looking for logic...just go ahead, switch off and enjoy the ride with plenty of popcorn.

Go DHOOM!

- Jay Mamtora -

Final Rating: * * * * .

Dhoom 2 ***1/2

The Movie Sequel has finally arrived in India. And it's about time. With sequels being a big draw at the box office and also proving to be critical hits (Krrish and Lage Raho Munnabhai), it seems that they are here to stay. So it was the right time for Yash Raj Films to jump into the fray and bring out one of the most eagerly anticipated films of the year. And as luck would have it, with Dhoom 2, they haven't killed the chicken that lays golden eggs for them.

The tale first. Aryan (Hrithik Roshan, Mr. A) is a hi-tech gizmo-wielding thief who perpetrates heists around the world. His repertoire consists of a comprehensive mastery of all extreme sports (rollerblading, sand-boarding, jumping off cliffs with pretty girls), dance moves which could put Whacko Jacko to shame, and a chameleon-like ability to morph himself into the Queen or an old janitor or even Snow White's dwarf if the situation demands.

His aim: to leave his initials on the world. His next target: Mumbai.

In India he bumps into Sunehri (Aishwarya Rai), a small-time crook who offers him an unlikely partnership and more; hence the jumping off cliffs and the scintillating dance moves.

Enter ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) and the cool-rider-dude-turned-cop Ali (Uday Chopra) from the first movie. Assisting them is ACP Shonali Bose (Bipasha Basu) - the resident expert on Mr A in the police department, and also an old college flame of Jai Dixit.

Three cops and two robbers - the old cat 'n' mouse game, or is it? More like Wile E Coyote dreaming up elaborate schemes to catch the Roadrunner. At times you are reminded of poor old Sisyphus pushing a huge rock up a hill till the end of eternity. The only solace for the cops is that they get to ride cool bikes (the mind boggles seeing Maharashtra Police Department cops riding around on bikes like the Suzuki GSX1300R Hayabusa).

The original Dhoom created a stir in Bollywood like no other action-comedy had in recent years. Its open-ended climax (with John Abraham's Kabir riding his bike off a cliff) led many to speculate that John Abraham will be walking around wearing a Hrithik Roshan mask (a la Mission Impossible) in Dhoom 2. Though that was not to be, some of these speculations do make for entertaining reading. (My favourite - John Abraham has a sex-change operation and comes back as Aishwarya Rai.)

Director Sanjay Gadhvi plays on all the strengths of the original and then adds more chutzpah in the form of a bigger star cast and the breathtaking locales of Rio de Janeiro and Durban, the expanses of the Namib Desert, the fortresses of Rajasthan and the backwaters of Goa.

Pritam's music is exhilarating and helps to move the story forward without being a hindrance, though one or two songs in the second half seem superfluous. Sameer's lyrics leave an indelible impression on the mind, and you often catch yourself humming along to the songs.

Bachchan Jr. cannot be denied his star status, even though he is yet to prove his mantle as an actor. An action-centric movie like Dhoom 2 is hardly a platform for a knockout performance, but it still pits him against a more versatile and refined actor in the form of Hrithik Roshan. Bachchan's acting limitations, barring a few electrifying moments, are clearly palpable as he stumbles his way through the movie in the shadow of Hrithik. Yes, make no mistake - Hrithik carries this movie all the way.

The ladies, Aishwarya Rai and Bipasha Basu, do no disservice to the film, and deliver exactly what is demanded of them in each frame - oodles and oodles of oomph. And as for Uday Chopra, the always-the-bridesmaid-never-the-bride does what he does best - walk around topless and crack one-liners, maybe in the hope of convincing older brother Aditya to make a Dhoom 3 with him in the starring role.

Speaking of Dhoom 3, here are my two cents - get an international hero like Jackie Chan and maybe a couple of Hollywood villains (Kevin Spacey comes to mind - hey, let a man dream!). For now, buckle up and enjoy the ride that is Dhoom 2.

Dhoom2 is definetly a really good, fun to watch movie. The only thing I couldent understand is some parts in the storyline. Everything was just happening. You wouldent know at some parts how this happened It was as if everyone was jumping onto one part 2 another! I didnt get all that😳

Everyone in the movie is nice, Except I think that Abhi wasent used that well in the movie! Uday Chopra had a better, important role den Abhi. Rimi Sen was just there for few minutes then No One knows where she went and what happened to her. Bipasha Basu was okie! .. I liked her for the first time in a Movie! Hrithik and Ash.. were the BEST! If I have to watch the movie again.. I would watch it for those two 😳

Overall, I would rate it 8/10 😊

Finally something to cover up for the disaster of Vivah! Dhoom 2 took my heart! I'd wager it's the best movie this year. Although the second half had some loopholes in it, the movie was awesome! Hrithik steals the movie with fab stunts, dancing movies, his face😳 and acting and everything else he has! He's given Dhoom 2 all his efforts! And they truly are commendable!! I seriously hope he gets the award for the Villain of the year! Aish and Bips looking really good in the fab designed costumes except the bikini one...Uday was hillarious!! Although Abhi didn't have that big a part in the movie, he has to be after Aish-Hrithik. Aish-Hrithik were on fire!! Hrithik sizzled the screen with his performance!! You can bet on that. The North American english accent from Aish was really commendable. Considering she's born in India and learnt British english accent, she's done a fab job!! Her kiss with Hrithik is something to look forward to! Haila, the kiss is something to die for...😛

My advice: Watch it now!! Hurry up! It's awesome. Skip classes if need be!!

Director : Sanjay Gadhvi
Music : Pritam
Lyrics : Sameer
Starring : Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Abhishek Bachchan, Uday Chopra, Bipasha Basu

By Sameer Wadekar, Bollywood Trade News Network

Movie Review: Dhoom 2

What people expect from movies like DHOOM is nothing but fun! High-speed chases, daredevil stunts and a dash of some gravity-defying action is what the audience expects. Something which can set their adrenaline rushing. Throw in a sizzle of some dazzling ladies and one gets a dish crisp and yummy! DHOOM had these ingredients and the recipe just clicked with the audiences. DHOOM 2 does not disappoint on this front. There is more on the plate with DHOOM 2 as far as the action in the film is concerned.

DHOOM was more of a biker movie but DHOOM 2 has a lot more breathtaking action sequences. And they all have been very well designed by Allan-Amin. They get an able support from Nirav Shah and Vikas Shivraman who are spot on with their superb photography and Rameshwar Bhagat who has done a good job with some tight editing. A clear indication of how Bollywood is climbing a few notches higher with the technical wizardry just getting better and better!

And it's the technical razzle-dazzle that saves the day for the movie which otherwise has a pretty ordinary script. There are a few blemishes here and there in the screenplay and some scenes look quite contrived and frail. The interrupting songs and dances just make it more irritating. We could have done without these songs as they are neither befitting nor do they keep lingering in your mind. As for the story, ACP Jai Dixit has another case on his hands. Only this time the thief who goes by the name of Mr. A (Hrithik Roshan) is smarter, suave and equipped. Mr. A is 'the perfect thief', to say it all. The action shuffles from the busy streets of Mumbai to the sultry locale of Rio De Janeiro. And yes Mr. A has a lovely lady partner too, the equally hip Sunheri (Aishwarya Rai).

The character in these kind of movies are more superhuman than human, Jack of all and master of everything! They fear nothing, operate eye-popping gadgets, ride bikes at a speed of 100 light years/s and are capable of pulling out any damn stunt in the world . The same bunch of go-getters we have here too. Performance-wise Hrithik is brilliant. The two ladies do their job with sincerity while Abhishek Bachchan and Uday Chopra are their usual selves. DHOOM had brought two names into the limelight, director Sanjay Gadhvi and music director Pritam. While Gadhvi does a fine job here, Pritam disappoints. The music does not impress.

Go and catch this flick on a lazy Sunday afternoon. It makes a good popcorn flick and has a few catchy moments. Watch out for the classy action sequences and the chemistry between Hrithik and Aishwarya, which is appealing to say the least!

Ash' S Kiss In ' Dhoom 2' Has Bachchans Fuming

[25 Nov 2006>

Aishwarya's hot kiss scene with Hrithik Roshan in Yashraj Films' DHOOM 2 has raised a hell of jealousy storm in her romantic relationship with Abhishek Bachchan. According to sources though Abhishek Bachchan was well aware of the fact that some passionate scenes had been filmed on Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya but the full impact of it hit only on Sunday when he saw the film in a special preview by Yashraj Films along with other Bachchans. Aishwarya too had flown from Jaipur, where she was shooting for Ashutosh's JODHA-AKBAR, for this occasion. Abhishek was very unhappy about the scene and made clear to Aishwarya in no uncertain terms that he did not like the way she did it.

The Bachchan family was also upset about Aishwarya Rai's skimpy costumes in the film. They could not understand the Aishwarya's need to change her image of a decently dressed actress, who even turned down Hollywood's offer due to kissing and skimpy outfits, at this stage of career and age. As is well known, Bachchans want Abhishek's girl friend to be decent and without any controversial baggage. However, Aishwarya Rai is not responding to any query regarding the kiss and keeping mum on the issue.
