A life in silence oblivious of the trials and tribulations

The excitement and tumultuous equations

The compassionate care and desertion to him were the same

Four loving hearts that cared for him mindful of his state

Tending to his every need with genuine affection

Evoking in the families that embraced them and him as theirs

According to him the respect and affection that a family elder deserved

Every milestone in II's life and his seemed deeply fused transcending lives

In him she found the solace her troubled heart sought

He the reason she was shunned as an Iyer wife

Cold treatment and uncharitable words hurled citing his state

He a witness to her transition as wife and Amma

A life on earth with time matures ripens and drops

He that was childlike all his life, the heart within

Paused in its relentless rhythmic beat  to become ...lived and rested

Peace he has attained a void in her heart and life will remain

Her deepest pain and loss

Few good men

He held Appa's hands in his  "I am so very sorry" he whispered

Appa looked up at the tall man pleading "He never wanted anything, can u ever see such a pure soul?"
R&B nodded, he felt his eyes fog up

He had cried for Ma
The Sikh man that lived across opened his door, and hugged R&B "U were sorely missed puttarjee" he reminded R&B

He nodded

"Where is your luggage, I can go get it" Appa offered

"Dont worry its in the trunk, I can get it in the morning" R&B smiled at Appa's "being on top of things, even during grief"

"Its not safe anymore in Delhi, very unreliable u know" Appa said sniffling

"I will text Dhyan" R&b reassured steering Appa inside

Mr Singh nodded and shut the door

Appa talked and talked and talked

Ranjan sat up in bed and fumbled looking for his glasses

R&B leaned and hit a lamp on the side of the couch, Ranjan smiled with gratitude

Watched his "distant" son... a few feet away

Ranjan dropped his phone as he went to get up, he sat down again swaying, R&B noticed, almost getting up to help

Ranjan waved sheepishly and sat down again

"U shud go back to sleep" "I am staying the night"

"Chalo jee changa" he said comforted

He heard Nivi in II's room cooing... awake and cooing

Something tugged at his heart strings

He had no plans to return to Delhi so soon, he had barely begun catching up after the trekking trip

"U must go see the baby... I will make horlicks for u" Appa offered

He had had a stiff one on the plane, he wasnt in the mood for horlicks

He smiled kindly

Some Iyer traditions were completely unfamiliar to him

He noticed the temple doors were shut, the bells were still, the light inside was out
He had never noticed that before in the 1.5 years

He hung his head

"Let me check on Nivi?" R&B requested
Appa smiled... not at all jealous

"She is very lovely" he said gushing

He walked over to a now laying down Ranjan... "Dhyan aaya?" he asked his son
R&B smiled and nodded

"Rab rakha" he said

R&B felt a surge of something inexplicable... He had studiously avoided feeling anything for Ranjan

But seeing him tonight, curled up in a corner of that D II living room, it felt like someone took his inside and blanched and squeezed it.

He stood momentarily in silence
Appa was clattering pots and pans in the kitchen making that horlicks any way

R&B pushed the half door handle on II's room

II was asleep on her side the baby lay WIDE awake, staring at the ceiling

Watching the lights dance on it, the tree leaves and the street light forming a mesh like pattern every time a car passed by the reflection slid to the ceiling  a tube of light

She cooed and spoke to the lights

She wore a onesie in pink, her fat thighs leaking from it

She rode a bicycle in bed, arm and leg movements, her hair filling almost half her pillow her cheeks overflowing

He bend down and kissed her

She roared as if she knew that touch

The frantic movements waking II up

She pulled the edge of her night shirt over her body, unsure who its was

"hey" he whispered, bending down to kiss her forehead

Nivi held his collar and clutched it tight

The tears that were ready to be shipped, flowed out of her eyes, he felt the pillow it was soaked

II sat up

"He never expected any thing from anybody" II echoed Mr Iyer's thoughts "He only gave" she said firmly

Though a person that didnt know Mr Iyer's bro would strongly disagree, "HOW can a paraplegic, severely mentally retarded man... GIVE?"

"He was a good man" R&B nodded lifting his daughter, a tear drop from his eye, fell on her fat cheek SPLAT!!

Emotions galore for a man who had pent up all those in a box in certain corner that he himself might have forgotten that it existed, then came a certain slender girl feisty, pretty, loving, caring, sexy, traditional yet modern and she not only located the very existence of those emotions but also put them to use as love, anger, jealousy, hurt, sad, delirious with joy, ecstatic with pleasure, and mostly wondering where those lucky stars came from and had shoot straight into his monotonous life with one certain pattern of work, reading, hiking and having sex.

And today that heart not only feels for an estranged father but also for that adversary f-I-l and that departed soul and then there lies a part of him all awake whom he didn't expect to love so much and so dearly and the pain to exist when he was faraway from her just for the sake of his earlier pattern of life. Seeing her Kicking her legs lying next to her mother and reacting to the reflection of light from vehicles passing on the road is a imagery you have created that I can easily imagine as my own or sth that is happening right next to me in a dim lighted room and a soaked pillow and a soul who is far away from impurities of the world and many souls who are shedding droplets of tears for the one who made his way to a new and a better life.

Whenever we hear a bad new about someone's death we are scared of losing our dear ones. R&B feeling something for Ranjan does show that he deeply cares for Ranjam but might never accept it even to himself.
Fabulous.

Yes, the paraplegic severely retarded man only GAVE.

Even in death, the good man made these few good men take their human side that showed more of love , warmth and compassion for each other. Their grief ...their own, his Death brings their basic humanity to the fore .

Very well written Nisha. 👏

I guess once you have loved someone its forever there. You are disappointed with someone only if you have had loved someone.

R&B might never forgive Ranjan but he will ultimately accept Ranjan not be cold to him as he was before II entered his life.

Remarkable II. You never tried to bridge the gap but you have.

Kajal loved your review. You guys express and analyse so well.
